Eh, could have been worse, those icons could have been all monochromatic, like in Finder

Personally not a fan, old layout had everything in one place without scrolling, but seems like people like more to scroll with their fingers than their eyes

Guess that one goes to the dustbin of history

your temerity is understandable.
some of us have been using macs since the days of system 7.
and we know a pig when we see it ;)
now all ventura needs is a bit of lipstick.
monterey is fine …🤠
when you say 'we' am sure you meant 'I'.

how long will it take to adapt to the new settings? (hint: not long). and how much time does anyone spend there? (another hint: not a lot).

i don't like everything apple does (as i've mentioned elsewhere, i've had the dock 'pemanently' locked away since 10.3.9); but it's not like apple threw things together over the weekend. they have a plan, test things, discuss things. and no matter what they do, some people will like the changes, others won't.

Some of us have been using Macs since System 6 and we (those of us who have) know a violation of Apple's own "Human Interface Guidelines" when we see it. The new "System Settings" in macOS 13 beta is just such a violation.

iOS looks the way it does because it must conform to the limitations of a tiny screen - the classic case of stuffing 10lbs of "stuff" in a 5lb sack. It is a compromise between usability and visibility.

27" screens share no such limitations. There is plenty of real estate to spread out and no reason to compromise just for the sake of convention.

what about 13" macs? and, if apple chooses to design something differently, they can do that. maybe they've (internally) made changes to their interface guidelines. either way, it's their OS to design. again, some people will like the changes, others won't. but you're entitled of course to your opinion...

The default resolution for my 13" MacBook Air is 1440x900, a far cry from that of an iPhone. But leaving resolution aside, the iPhone orientation being portrait places demands on the UX design that do not constrain someone designing for the landscape orientation of a MB. History has shown that Apple is far from infallible and very often needs insight before they get it right.

Laying opinions aside, the dictates of Apple's HIG which I re-read moments ago (taking your suggestion that they may have been changed) seem to indicate someone on the UX team didn't abide by them, if they indeed read them.

And while it is their OS to design, it is ours to use...or not. At this point, I will not make the switch.

i use an OS for it's under-the-hood qualities, not for minor improvements in eye candy or 'features'.

apple has a team that designs it's OSes, and obviously they're happy with the new settings. so, again, you're entitled to your opinion, but to discount the entire OS because of the look of the settings... i don't get that at all.

Um, OK, I agree that the new settings app could be better. I believe it will get better, and I believe I will get used to it. It's more logical to me hierarchically speaking but, weirdly, comes off as less intuitive since it requires too much parsing of text. The text is too small for me since I'm running it on a headless Mac mini via screen sharing.

Don't forget it's the very first beta and providing constructive feedback is the name of the game.

I like it. Haven't they said that the settings page is still a work in progress and will be tweaked throughout the betas?

Is there a single System Settings plist that we can save as a backup once we've selected our preferred settings so we don't have to go through every item again following a system restore?

seems like a reasonable request, but still... how often do you do a system restore? and how many macusers ever do a single restore? probably not a priority for apple (a single plist for all system settings)...

i wouldn't hate it so much if so many things didn't appear to be in completely random order

i mean, i'm sure they aren't random, but the organizational logic isn't always obvious to me

Has anyone been able to figure out how you enable "on-demand" for VPN? Can't for the life of me figure out how to enable it with the new settings. If I search for "on-demand" if shows me an option for "VPN on Demand" but clicking on it doesn't take me anywhere. And there is no option to be found for any of my configured VPN options under the VPN portion of the settings and there doesn't seem to be any option to have VPN showing in the menu bar anymore so the menu through the menu bar for enable on-demand is also gone.

Need to able to get VPN showing in the menu bar as well. Not having a option to easily verify whether your VPN is actually running and connected or not doesn't sit right with me.

A few weeks after I kinda got used to it. TBH the old system preferences app needed to be redesigned, it felt outdated. And they'll surely refine it in the next betas (such as with the trackpad videos, as Craig mentioned on The Talk Show).

simple. fast. great value and appears in menu bar

I have a red badge "1" on my dock icon... I checked all settings, don't see what there is "1" of?
