The direction macOS is heading is extremely worrying and the settings app makes me truely sad about the state of the mac.

Why can the System Settings window only be resized vertically but not horizontally?
On my intel mac switching bettween sections is EXTREMELY laggy sometimes up to 2 seconds.

Functionality like switching wallpapers on second screens (because macOS .... ALWAYS. FORGETS. WALLPAPER. SETTINGS. when you unplug monitors and plug them back in.) just doesn't work - you have to select another then back on to the wallpaper (Granted - this could be a beta bug and I've filed a radar).

I dunno - this swift ui stuff doesn't feel ready to me, it needs to mature more and moving core functionality to it feels too soon.

how does your first sentence connect to the following sentences?

try resizing the system settings on previous OSes. oh, wait.

also... developer beta 2. it's early in the beta cycle. so, it's a good time to bring up issues, and discuss the OS. you've even yourself acknowledged that 'this could be a beta bug'.

so, humble suggestion: save the 'sky is falling' posts for the final release of ventura (or at least wait for us public beta people to show up here, when... all hell will break loose) 🤪

There’s no need to resize horizontal. It will have big ugly empty spaces like the Settings app on Windows.

Windows GUI so dumb they can even resize calculator into some big full screen app with huge dumb buttons.

Took me a few days to get used to it. Now, it feels nice.

I especially like the fact that searches within `System Settings` now give you a list of contextual results rather than just spotlighting icons ... so you can see what that result actually is before clicking through to it. Here's a the list that shows up when I search for 'bluetooth':

Who said anything about Windows? Settings is an awful awful UI atrocity

I just wish that olds stuff (meaning current stuff) would work on these major os updates without having to do the usual wait for app updates and a million compatibility problems dance for once. painful..

Well…it’s par for the course. Apple updates things. Certain software gets broken by the updates. Don’t like the dance, just stay on one version.

I hate it!!! Why can't I resize it? I'm on a freakin 27-in or most times, a 32-inch Ultrawide! C'mon! I have the screen real estate, let me resize the damn window and allow me to view more of the items without requiring scrolling!

Honestly, it's not so bad, once I got past the initial shock. Some settings that I knew where they were before are a bit harder to find, but I'll get used to it. Just like I got used to where they were in System Preferences. I wish I could resize it but I couldn't resize the old one either, so not a big deal...

Yeah for me I just had to get used to it. I prefer the old one since it was organized easier and because of "muscle memory" over the last 20 years, I knew right where everything was. Once I found my way around it, it's not too bad. I have an iPhone XR and the latest iPad Pro so it wasn't foreign or anything, just need to figure out where they put everything.

took me a few days to get used to it. it's much more... adult than the old preferences window, and am really liking it. amazing, tho, how long the previous iteration lasted (centuries?)...

Has anyone figured out a good way to work with the "Allow in the Background" settings under the Login Items?

Lots of the apps are listed under the developer name/company instead of the application name. I've spent 30 mins trying to Google everyone and *still* having trouble figuring out what's what.

Does anyone have a better way to figure this out?

Hate the new system settings -- seems like going backwards and makes it harder to find things.

We could not re-size the old one system pref either and that had windows that needed scrolling too.
I think Apple wants minimal white space in settings.

At least they are still using the color...imagine if all options in the sidebar were monochromatic.

Not like in Finder, everything in sidebar is monochromatic.

Screen Shot 2022-07-23 at 5.28.28 PM.png

Imagine if Downloads for an example had a green icon. It would take much less time to acquire and click on it, because everyone of us processes the color much faster than reading the text or discerning the shapes.

(Does not apply to people with color blindness unfortunately, but with good use of filters in Accessibility, they could make most of this function maybe)

how long will it take to adapt to the new settings? (hint: not long).
There's a difference between "adapting" and "liking" and/or "accepting" something. I can adapt to lose an arm, but that doesn't mean I like it.
and how much time does anyone spend there? (another hint: not a lot).
Given how cluttered and unwieldy the new settings are, probably more now. ;)
apple has a team that designs it's OSes, and obviously they're happy with the new settings.
Apple also had a team that designed this, and was obviously happy with it:

some of us (and, obviously, apple) prefer the new settings. & not sure how adapting to the new system settings is like losing an arm... 🤔

it's much-of the same options, just... better organized. not a place you'd need to spend more time in. 😉

i have no issue with the mouse recharge design; quick recharge is there if i need it, otherwise... i usually recharge during a movie, or overnight. where you would put the port? 🤔

Talk about making a mountain out of a mousehill.

Charge it overnight when you receive the notifications, and if you stubbornly refuse to do that until its dead just plug it in while you get a cup of coffee and it has enough power for the day.
