is there a 'I don't have a strong opinion on it' option? I'm fine with it - I think it can provide a sense of an edge to edge screen for homescreen/lockscreen and in some apps with light backgrounds, and the ears are a reasonable way to move status information out of the way and save some of the 'main rectangle' space.

It seems the main seething bile for the notch comes from it not being black - rather than the concept of the ears generally

No. Not one bit.

And lets understand, Apple didn't add the notch for logical and sound design reasons, they added it to be distinctive.

That's not a good reason in my opinion.

Good Design is honest.

It's there to house the hardware to make Face ID possible.

Could they have hidden the rest of the bezel by making the screen black at the top? Sure, but thats not the shape of the screen. Why have an edge to edge screen and add the bezel back with software?

It's honest and informative design.

I love the notch, it's distinctive and also a good use of space on either side instead of having a bezel that goes all the way across the top. It also gives the appearance of a completely bezelless screen because of the 4 rounded corners.

Long live the Notch!

let's put it this way;

If Samsung came with a notch like the one on the iPhone X, the internet would completely collapse (even if people deny this here at macrumors but know its simply true).
But since its Apple, the notch is okay, no question's asked.

(and I am still ordering one on the 27th! 😎 )

I'm indifferent about it to be honest. I neither love it or hate it. I couldn't vote as that wasn't one of the options and it should have been.

I like it and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. It gives the phone character now that the home button is gone. Otherwise the front would be completely featureless.

I like it because it gives us more useable space, and the lack of bezels makes the device look sexy. Without the notch, the device would have to have an ugly bezel (like the Samsung S8), and beneath that bezel would be the iPhone status bar, and beneath that bar the app you are running. With the notch, the status bar only takes up the wings around the notch, so the app you are running can use more of the screen.

But the notch is a bezel... albeit a smaller one. 🙄 Apple only added it so that the X wouldn't look the same as Samsung's full screen phones, let's be honest.
Yup, the iPhone X has only been in development since March, when Samsung released a Bezel-less phone 🙄

I like it, it gives something distinctive and unique in a world full of boring.

It’s strictly a marketing gimmick to call the phone “edge to edge” and claim it’s a 5.8 inch screen. All notch sensors could have been in a much thinner uniform top bezel. These are strictly objective facts.

Its a question that really don't mean anything, why because I like the iPhone and I will buy it I dont have to like every feature in it and not every feature I use in this case I dont have a choice I can't remove it so in landscape mode it just stuck in the way, but I still will buy it and know that next year it will not be there with the iPhone XI
