It would have been so much better if they just made the top screen black to blend in with the notch like the previous 3rd party mockups ... I just don’t get the notch. I mean I guess I understand they did it to stand out but it would have been cool to have it black and have the clock and notifications etc in there.

When you say top screen black, do you mean just the areas to the left/right of the notch, or do you also mean a strip below the notch.

Because if you wanted the clock, notifications etc. in the blackened area, you'd need a full black 'header' to squeeze all that info in.

Honestly I'm more concerned about Control Center being moved to the top than I am about the notch itself. I'm not sure if Control Center is going to be annoying.

It's definitely different. But I think with this new Gesture control, there will be a learning curve. Some will Adjust and others will not. But eventually things change over time that we were used to, given the removal of the home button.

No. Not one bit.

And lets understand, Apple didn't add the notch for logical and sound design reasons, they added it to be distinctive.

That's not a good reason in my opinion.

Do you not realise that you saying that they added it just to be distinctive is you completely and totally being suckered into the clickbait articles that have all said that. How can anyone claim to know what is in Apple's mind.

Fact of the matter is that if you are going to have wall to wall screen then at the absolute minimum there must at least be some sort of a notch if only for a camera, just like the non essential PH-1. You might say, as some people have that they should just have the whole top bit blacked out, but having the notch does not stop that, as that is simply a software controlled thing, in fact when watching a video you'll have that choice anyway.

So unless you think there should be no sensors at all on the front of the phone, not only no 3D depth sensing but no selfie camera either, then I don't understand what you think Apple should have done.

Having said all that though, I think the notch looks really good.

The notch is fine and it gives a kind of retro look to the screen which I kinda like - sort of like rotating index cards!

let's put it this way;

If Samsung came with a notch like the one on the iPhone X, the internet would completely collapse (even if people deny this here at macrumors but know its simply true).
But since its Apple, the notch is okay, no question's asked.

(and I am still ordering one on the 27th! 😎 )

Am fairly sure no one would care what Samsung do that much! I don't think people are generally as fixated as they are with finding things to comment/criticize Apple products and rightly or wrongly I put that down to the competitors feeling threatened and or looking to undermine the competition.

Two questions that don’t seem to get a mention.
Where do people think Apple could put the earpiece if there was no notch? Surely when you are on a private call the speaker has to face roughly down your ear hole.
Also how would you tell at a glance which way up the phone was, surely at the moment you all glance at the home button to know this, so if there was no bezel how would you know?
Sure you want a full screen phone but form has to follow function.
These are also reasons why I don’t think Apple will ever try and get rid of the notch on this phase of iPhones.
It may change size but I recon it’s here for 4 years, so get used to it.
Just my opinions of course but people sometimes seem to forget that these still have to work as a phone too.

No one has a clue how it will be in real time, in real life. All people are doing is crying over pictures. I bet for 99% of people when they are using the iPhone they wont even notice the notch.

I love the notch. It suits my style 😛

This. Look at the hands on videos. It’s really not a big deal at all. The hysteria over this is silly.

Aesthetically, there is something wrong with you if you like it.

In terms of functionality it's the best solution I can see for this new design direction, saving as much space as possible for the screen

I think in action when you aren't going ooh and aah over the look and are actually using it it probably won't matter.... we'll see

question for you app developers here. I know apple put in their guidelines that apps should not try to hide the notch... But is that just a suggestion? or is it mandatory? Just wondering if Apple will reject app updates that hide the notch or if developers will be able to do hide it in their apps.

i wish it was black as well

I dont love nor dislike the notch, its an iPhone X feature! Getting an issue-free phone is paramount

No but I understand that it’s a necessary evil as it houses all of the 3D camera stuff.

It is absolutely NOT a necessary evil. They could have just had a top bezel. I don't care if everyone was screaming for bezel-less design; that's no excuse for ending up with such a poor design.

And it's not necessarily the hardware that is the major problem here, their software choices and guidelines are where they really lost it. Using that space for time/status is fine, but that space should be off limits for apps, and ideally a black background to blend in with the notch. This could be handled better in software and their guidelines for 3rd party devs, but Apple is set on the course they are in and we won't see a change any time soon.

The notch is not the only aspect of this. They curved corners present problems. The changes involving swipe-style actions have issues.

The sad thing is that between the notch and the pull-up bar thing at the bottom of the screen, in the typical situation, you don't even gain that much usable screen space vs the 4.7" iPhone.

All the people so bothered about the notch can just jailbreak their X’s and have the ‘software’ bezel that they so desire. Also people moaning about the notch ‘breaking design principles’ need to get a grip. If designers always followed rigid rules then we would eventually just end up with everything looking exactly the same without any variations.

Who cares if it all looks the same, in the end it’s all about the OS and the experience.... all designs will get old and feel dated!

This I agree with. Eventually hardware will wear off and ultimately comes down to experience with the operating platform and the integration with the software.
