Want to know why? The Japanese government owns half of the tobacco industry. At least in the US, it's done through lobbying and bribes.
hahahahahahahaha

I tried taking a drag of a cigarette once. Er. Yeah, you can't smoke that the same way you would um... other substances. I was coughing for a good five minutes at least.
Funny, when I was a smoker, (and still today), I gag like hell on that other substance you speak of, and did just fine with cigs.

Someone was saying cigs have no medical benefit - I've heard that they can help you produce a bowel movement.

Anyway, yeah - cigs are a great break - a great way to take the pressure off of living life and just have some 'me' time to think. The problem is, cigs are horribly associative, so when you build that association between coping with stress and cigs, you are increasing your addiction.

Yes, the physical addiction to nicotine is bad, but that part is over after just a few days of not smoking. What makes people keep coming back to cigarettes is the psychological aspect - the associations.

And for all those people who are preaching about how bad cigs are, the facts that you state may be 100% true, but the way you approach the issue is completely counterproductive. The way to communicate with someone is to show that you care about them and that you have a desire to understand them (if you don't care about them then you needa think about why you are talking to them in the first place). From there you earn their trust. If you don't build that foundation, then you're just some dude with a big ego who likes to stand up on pedestals and hear his own voice.

And finally, for the OP, it's cool that you smoke - work your way through a tough time, but don't lose sight of your goal of building a better lifestyle where you don't have to be alone all the time. Obviously I have no idea the details of yoru situation, and I'm sure you already know this, but keep it in the forefront of your mind: cigarettes can't make a lifestyle you are miserable with a lifestyle you are happy with. Don't lose sight of the life you'd like to live.

and if you call me "weak" to my face I will break most of the bones you have in yours.
I don't know.

Reminds me of a friend who wanted me to help him quit smoking. He asked me to not let him put a cigarete in his mouth.

Well he did, and I removed it with my foot -- well most of it! :D

And he was much taller than me. Then again, that was a few years ago and I was in much better shape.

I don't smoke. Never have and never want to. I try to hold my breath when walking by someone puffing on a cigarette because the smell makes me sick and the smoke makes me wheezy.

I'm not going to preach to you all about why you shouldn't smoke (although I, personally, do wish for a smoke-free world). We're all intelligent adults here (for the most part at least) so you can make your own decisions on the subject. That is all.

If you say it help your anxiety, I might have to take up smoking lol. My anxiety has been driving me nuts latley...

I guess it depends if you don't mind trading off anxiety for other health problems... ;)

I vowed to myself never to ever try smoking but after I moved to Shanghai I started to go to clubs and bars and I found myself taking puffs of friend's cigarettes and cigars. Cigars are better.

I don't smoke regularly though, and I've never actually had a cigarette for myself. I just take a puff of a friend's once in a while.

exactly the same story for me.
also, seeing both my parents struggling to quit (one succesfully, one still trying to kick it), a step-parent struggling to quit (succesfully), having my grandfather die from esophageal cancer (he quit smoking before i was born), and having another grandfather die (before i was born) from something smoking related has made me sure that i never will smoke, not even try it.

I love the smell of smoke: From burning cedar, paper, tar, even tobacco. While I do not smoke cigarrettes, I do have a slight liking to it's odor. Not as much as a nice bonfire full of pine but it's enough. I do smoke cigars every now and then. Nothing harmful in that and I enjoy it very much. Out here in KY, tobacco is a big thing. Lots of tobacco fields south of Louisvile.

All-in-all I love the occasional cigar smoking, but habitual smoking is not for me, because I still wanna keep it special.

And one thing I hate is those annoying "Smoking is bad" commercials (I'm looking at you Truth!!). People already know it's not healthy to smoke. Those commercials aren't gonna do anything nowadays. It's gonna take a push from some close freinds for a smoker to stop, not some "urbanesque" "smoking's bad m'kay" commercial.

I am, what I consider, a considerate smoker. I never smoke around non smokers even when allowed. I never smoke around children. I have mainly non smoking friends (some for longer than 10 years) who have never seen me smoke and are surprised that I do.

I mainly smoke at home using an air filter. I change my clothes before going out, shower, wash my hair and brush my teeth.

Yes, I am quitting. I had quit for years but then had some horrible surgery, got angry and and bought some. Yes, I am disappointed with myself. I've limited the amount I can smoke and delay my first cigarette of the day. It's hard, so please, give me a break. I really don't bother anyone with it (except myself). If you met in person you would not know I smoke.

I just love the feeling of carbon monoxide and various particulates filling my lungs.

Seriously though, the only time I'll let any sort of smoke come near me (when I can control it anyway), is at a campfire, where it usually doesn't smell like ass.
However, thanks to the recent smoking ban in RI, the club in Providence that hires many local bands now smells entirely of piss, because people can't smoke inside to cover it up. The place is a dump anyway, there's a ****ing POLE front and center on the stage!

Off and on for many years. Most women don't like it, but I did date a strange woman for a while -- she didn't like me to smoke, but told me that the taste of smoke on my breath when she kissed me was a turn-on. Yes, she was a lunatic. :D

I am sorry for the rant but..........

I smoked for 10 years. I quit in grad school. I did chew enough nicotine gum to make my heart race! I started working in a really stressful overtime-full job. My boss smokes, so I started back up just to have an excuse to run out of that place and clear my head every hour.

Alot of girls around me have candy bowls. I have put out my supply of nicotine gum left over from when that was my candy. I do take a couple of pieces into those meetings that I have to go to until 11 or 12 PM. Now I am back at the point that I smoke 2 to 3 packs a day.

The only way you get out of my business is you quit or the ambulance comes for you. The 33 year old next to me had a heart attack today! But, I am young, have the best insurance money can buy, and the money is great, so f**k it! If they would let me have liquor and a cot, I would never leave. (More Overtime!!!!)

Enjoy it while you got it!
But don't smoke unless you already like it!

At one time 60 a day

Been off them now for about 25 years :)

Does not smoking and drinking make you live longer? ......... No, it just seems that way

I don't smoke.(Although I do admit to trying it once; didn't like it) Both of my parents smoke, but I don't really care.

If people want to smoke, fine. I don't even care where they do it. They have rights too, and I'm sick of seeing this anti-smoking crap where all these non-smokers treat smokers like piles of crap.

They're just good people who made a bad decision.:(

This needs to be a poll.

I can see the attraction and have smoked on rare occaision. But it's a vile, disgusting and completely unnecessary habit. As much as I believe in various freedoms, smoking is one thing I would happily banish from the Earth. I'm greatly looking forward to the UK smoking ban coming into force so I can enjoy nights out without smelling like an ashtray afterwards.

It might help your anxiety. It's much more likely that it's a subconscious thing though. If your anxiety has become particularly bad then go seek medical advice, don't use it as an excuse to damage your own health and the health of people around you.

Correction: English Smoking Ban.

Scotland, N.I. & possibly Wales have had the smoking ban for some time now.

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I smoked for 9 years, the last two of those years were 2 packs a day (or more). I just celebrated my first month smoke free since I was 17 and it really feels great. The mental cravings still are somewhat of an issue (music tends to trigger cravings for me...and I write music!:p ).

I miss the social part of it badly, but I am looking forward to using the money I save for other things (more audio gear and maybe my first tattoo?).
