Those people who get upset at the comments about smokers being stupid and weak, sorry but it is the truth. Well smokers under 30 at any rate, i'll accept that perhaps before that time the evidence hasn't been quite so compelling for the overwhelming detrimental effects of smoking. I do feel sorry for older people, those who served in the armed forces, who were almost encouraged to smoke. But younger people who smoke make me angry irrespective of the nonsense that they come out with to justify their habits.

As for the people who object to the 'preachers' I'm sorry if you find us so much more objectionable and bigoted than smokers, obviously there's a danger we might improve your quality of life. I for one feel a certain obligation to be preachy as I work in a job when I frequently encounter people who have taken the decision to smoke at the expense of someone else who has no say in the matter - namely parents. Curiously it is very rare to meet a parent who admits to smoking around their children and they'll tell you how much they love them. However, the evidence is there for all to see, a parent's second hand smoke will harm their child and yet they continue to subject them to it!

So for you smokers who complain that life is stressful, here's an idea try taking some exercise or developing new coping techniques - plenty of us get stressed out without feeling compelled to stick a burning ember in between our lips and inhale. If you're addicted then seek help (but i still think that you were weak to start). If you want to turn around and say that drinking/over eating/underage sex etc are bigger problems i believe that is called cognitive dissonance - stop making excuses and sort yourselves out. And if you're one of those unapologetic, I've made my bed and i'll lie in it smokers - find your corner and die quietly because COPD (let's leave cancer for a bit) is a really crappy way to go.

[Those people with IBD, I'll let you off!]

For the record I've never tried smoking, I don't drink alcohol, I'm not overweight (although my diet leaves a lot to be desired) and I regularly drink large quantities of coke.

Puritanism is one of the polito-religious ideals that make it easy for "stupid and weak people to cope". It draws the practitioners mind from there own shortfalls. The feeling of righteousness is a powerful drug, However like any other drug it reeks, it is socially unacceptable, and can kill 10s of millions if the addict progresses to the class A ideals such as facism or communism.

As for children, if you seriously believe you have the god given gift to judge how much other individuals love their off-spring by applying your own prejudice as a benchmark then you are more dangerous than all the smokers out there.

I smoke, drink and have sex! And I feel great about it! Trying not to smoke in front of no smokers and I understand they point of view. But hate people telling me its gona kill me and.....My choice, my life. I dont whine! :p

I could've smoked last night for the first time... but I decided not to.

So no, I haven't ever smoked.

Update: I smoked for the firtst time on 4/20. It was a Romeo y Julietta cigar... nothing illegal, of course (i wish). It didn't taste so well, but I think it's one of those things that you come to appreciate with time.

I will probably be an occasional smoker... maybe once a month, when the mood strikes, and the friends are down.

I dig it

Never have, never will sorry. It's kind of funny, I just did a paper on putting a smoking ban in public places, what a coincidence this would pop up.

I keep trying to get my kids to smoke but they refuse. Every time I see someone in a movie smoking, I point out to them how cool the person smoking looks. I let them know that they would look cool, but they just refuse.

I'm probably the only parent in the world trying to get his kids to smoke. oh well.

Every ex smoker I have ever met has told me that while they were smokers they felt like they were smoking by choice, felt like smoking was a great thing, got pissed at others telling them that smoking killed.

Only after they had beaten their addiction did every single one of them realize that they had not been smoking by choice but because they were addicted and too weak to quit, and that their hatred for non-smokers' hostile comments had in fact been subconscious hatred for themselves for being too weak to quit.

Sorry, guys, but smoking does kill, and you are poisoning yourselves and others around you even if you're 10 ft. away. There is nothing positive to say about smoking, so stop kidding yourselves, get your act together and STOP!

Dont smoke, Killed my grandfather before i got to meet him

Its also the reason i dont smoke pot too... I have friends who do and tried to get me too, but w.e. i hate the smell and the feel of anything other than air going into my lungs

Damn hippies.

I'm surrounded by hippies but can't really stand them. I view marijuana the same way I view caffeine, as a psychoactive drug that can alter perceptions. I have taken some of my best exams while under the influence of caffeine or occasionally some form of amphetamine, likewise, I have written some of my best papers while high and had some of my best social experiences while drunk. Drugs are all around us, but unfortunately in the United States we have chosen to outlaw everything potentially harmful and then lie to our children about why those things are illegal. The solution is education and moderation.

Is that a joke?

You really should be ashamed. If you feel the need to smoke that's your decision, but you should not be pressing the deadly habit on your children.

Plus, you've also proved why movies depicting smoking may soon be rated "R."

both my parents smoke cigs. i can't stand it. gives me headaches.
so i've been privvy to plenty of second hand smoke. i have an air filter now though for my room. i won't ever smoke cigs. ever.

i dont smoke, and i never will......but i dont object to people doing it, they certainly have the ability to make their own descisions, and i dont think it requires my input.

S

Thank you. As a smoker I am glad to hear someone say that they don't mind letting the world be free and allowing free men to make their own choices without personal input. :)

There are much better things to do with that money. For the price of a pack, you can eat from a value menu or save towards a CD or something you need.

So, you can clog your arteries and get fat, or waste your money on material possessions…
I don't see either of those as constructive alternatives.

On a side note, the government have just introduced a law, where all cigarette packets have to have graphic pictures of the detrimental health effects. They're really gross - gangrenous feet, diseased lungs, blocked arteries and mouth cancer.

If those were the standard effects of smoking, my friends and I would look like we have the black plague.

Anyone ever work in advertising? We all know that the hamburger in the commercial isn't real. And it certainly doesn't look like the one we get at the burger joint.

Obviously it's those peoples' jobs to find the most disgusting photos possible of the symptoms they want to promote to scare you. So they search the world for them I'm sure. And the ones you see probably came from some third world country without health standards and education, and those people could have been coal miners as well for all you know.

You believe everything you see the in the modern world of photoshop and advertising mastery?

Can't people keep their moralizing to themselves?

Well said.
Some of you feel the need to oppress others through your bans. I can think of a few things I'd like to say to that. Like, I'm free and you don't own public areas. Others will be left out in the sake of time and taste.

Think of all the doctors you'll see when you have cancer.

If every smoker got cancer there would be a ridiculous increase the cancer rate right now.
What's that they say? Half a million die from smoking related illness… But only 140,000 American smokers die from cancer a year…

I don't care if people smoke, but just as they have the right to choose whether to smoke or not, others should have the right to not have to inhale smoke when someone near them is smoking.

What about the people that don't want to inhale carbon monoxide? Should we ban all forms of fuel burning as well?

You have the right to walk the other direction when I'm smoking.

what type of smoking;) Light it!!!

Bless

Hell ya!!!! Here's to MR: >blunt< :D

Uh...good for them!

Even though I'm 98% sure this is a joke.

I was waiting for someone to make a ridiculous comparison like this.

Smoke all you want, it's simply natural selection at its best, but do it away from me so I don't have to pollute my lungs with your bad habit. And have the common decency to realize that there's a slight chance that not everyone around you will enjoy a nice puff of smoke in their lungs.

I make ridiculous comparisons when other people make ridiculous requests.

And I always smoke politely around others and in public.

And I never smoke indoors if there are children.
