If ot doesn't matter then why ask? Its not being snobby, it just feels awkward to have something that would be a month's income for some people.

Someone making $36k isn't good enough for a top-end $3k macbook pro?

It's snobby to assume that your computer costs a month's income for someone else unless you have specifically been the pot calling the kettle black by asking them their annual income, and even if it is a month's income, big deal. $3k on $36k really isn't a big deal or exorbitant purchase.

Most people never ask. The ones that do usually do so because they are curious about my work and ask "how much does an edit machine cost"? I usually just tell them I have a brand new car invested in my work system.
like honda civic new car or corvette new car?

if you only make 36k a year how do you afford to live, let alone spend 3k on a computer?

haha well i make less then $500 a month and i still manage to afford a mac =D hehe LOTS OF SAVING

please note i have NEVER smoked, done drugs or consumed alcohol of any sort!! so i keep my liquid able income in the bank haha

to me its a pride thing, i not only worked hard and made the money but i invested it in the absolute best computer! i did not walk into futureshop and buy the shiniest or cheapest computer i could find, but i researched and researched and researched it until i know more about it then the salesmen do (this is 99% true for me haha good for me or bad for them not sure)

Same story, except for the drugs part.

haha me too. i used to love going into the verizon store schooling all the employees on how much better the iphone was than the droids. that stopped when the droids became better than the iphone.

Same story, except for the drugs part.

+1

Um why does it matter what it cost?I personally traded a PowerMac G5,surround sound,2 PowerBook G4 Titaniums,4 iBook Clamshells and a box of clamshell parts and 2 flat screens for my MB used.
And yes,all were working perfect at the time.

WOW

I mean, I know the cost to actually live varies from location to location (i.e. filthy rich in some rural area is well below poverty in NY).

BUT WOW.

How much is your rent?

I don't see why some people are so uptight here? Firstly, $2500 is not a lot of money. It's not like a person is rich financially because they can buy a computer that cost $2500. Come back and talk to me when you're spending $50,000-$100,000 on a personal possession other than a house.
It doesn't happen often but when someone asks me how much my Macs cost me, I tell them the truth. What's the big deal? If that's out of their price range then so be it, I'm not gonna feel bad about it, if that's the case then it's no point in my being seen in public with my Macbook.
What happens when a guy pulls up in a Porsche and I tell him, "Hey, I love your car, what is that model going for in price?", he then tells me, $100k. Well, that's out of my price range. Should he feel bad because he can afford it and I can't? NO.
Also, just because one lives in a rural area doesn't mean you know everyone's financial situation and therefore it's presumptuous to assume that someone either can't afford a Mac, and because you have one and they don't there's no reason to lie about you paid for it. At that point you sound more ashamed of yourself for having something nice just because you can afford so. Many people live simple lives but have plenty of money in the bank and investments, it's not good to assume that they can't afford something based on how and where they live.
You certainly don't have to be a rich guy to own a Mac. People can buy an average house that cost $500k, that still doesn't make them rich, so spending $2500 on a Macintosh computer ain't gonna put you on the front cover of Forbes magazine.

clearly you moneybags own your own properties so technically your rents are negative (since you have tenants).

or am I wrong?

Sooo close!

I'm a soon to be 19 year old college student on summer vacation sitting on my parents couch .

Ironically, I only have an income while at school (while taking on massive debt at the same time) of a whopping $8.50 and hour for a max of 20 hours a week.

When someone asks me about the price of anything I own. I tell them. And I don't feel weird about it. I don't know their situation or the reason they are asking and I don't presume to know based on median income level or demographics or such. Most likely they are just curious. Even if I KNOW that they couldn't afford it I would still tell them; not to boast or such but simply to answer their question.

People have a weird, uncomfortable relationship with money.

I overpaid for my mac in strict terms (got no discount or ipod touch or printer or through amazon (no sales tax)). but I am ok with it, I am getting good use out of it. And many times I find when I am focusing soley on the very best deal I can achieve, I am more enthralled with the deal than the product leading to choices that might not be optimal for me. Not evrything is about the dollars and cents.
