I don't really mind telling if I know the person, but I would not tell a stranger. If they tell me it's too expensive I normally just reply it's the computer I wanted.

wow i didnt know it went into that much detail.

mine is 80k http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midlothian,_Virginia

wow i just realized that its not too safe to put up my almost exact location on here. especially since poeple with brains could figure out a lot more about me just by my username.

If you really realized, you wouldn't have put that explaining paragraph in, or posted your location at all really. Be smart man.

How much I spend is no one's business but my own, so no, I don't tell people how much I paid for my MacBook.

I know people who think I'm a preppy rich kid becasue I have a nice car, a MBP, and an iPhone at 21. But I tell them the truth, $2200. They gawk about my stupidity, but I'll end up treating their gun shot wounds some day.

If people think that of you when you're 21, I'd hate to hear what people think of me. I'm 16 with a 17" MacBook Pro, iPhone 4, and my own car.

I don't see anything wrong with this just as long as you paid for it yourself.

I paid for my MBP and iPhone myself, but my dad pays the wireless bill becasue of his really old cheap plan. The car was half gift, I payed $7K of $14K, but I pay for its insurance, gas, and maintenance. Scholarships and family loans take care of textbooks and classes. So my paycheck goes into the car, rent/utilities, and food. Heath insurance is a problem though, becasue in a few months, I'm no longer supported on my dad's work coverage.

I don't talk to people about how much my possessions cost... frankly I think it's a little rude to ask, and if they want to know they can look on the internet.

Same here, unless they have a genuine interest then I will tell them but 99% of the time I just say I don't know.

I don't see why some people are so uptight here? Firstly, $2500 is not a lot of money. It's not like a person is rich financially because they can buy a computer that cost $2500.

I just bought a Canon T2i, a Canon EF-S 55-250mm lens, and a nice Ape Case for less than $1,180. I could also buy a 50" Panasonic Viera plasma for $978 at Best Buy and I still have more than $300 to play with.

Your MBP 17" looks ridiculously expensive to me.

You certainly don't have to be a rich guy to own a Mac. People can buy an average house that cost $500k, that still doesn't make them rich, so spending $2500 on a Macintosh computer ain't gonna put you on the front cover of Forbes magazine.

An employee working the cash register at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes or Target is bringing home less than 15k per YEAR.

Tell them how a 500k house is "average". Better yet explain to them how they could ever hope to buy one.

Hey bro I live in Saint Louis :D Nice to see another Missourian on here.

Now on topic, I go ahead and tell them, because I've grown up being on the upper side of the income bracket. I'm used to the looks people give when they think I've wasted money, or that my parents paid for my things. What they don't know is that I have two jobs, invest in the stock market, and buy/sell electronics on the side, which turns out to be a pretty penny (which a college student needs). Personally, I think I deserve to buy what I want with my hard earned money, and I really wish someone would try and dictate what to do with it.

I'm going to speculate its $0, like mine. Care to guess why? ;)

You're in Rochester, which I assume to be in New York. TopHatPlus is in Ontario.

They have free health care up there, and in my travels through Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City and Vancouver I was unable to find a homeless Canadian.

And I looked hard.

There may be another reason for how he does it.

Only if the Draft is reinstated.

Don't drive outside your gated community unless you have the car bulletproofed.

The rage out here is a hundred times worse than you can imagine.

Anyone who is polite wouldn't ask someone else how much their possessions cost.

If the person really wants to know how much it costs they can go to a store and find our or even just hop on the internet and look it up for themselves.

None of my friends or family would be rude enough to ask how much something costs...its kinda like implying its too expensive. And really its none of their business.

People don't ask me such a question unless they're planing on buying one, in which case I just tell them to take a look at the online Apple Store because the price range is kind of wide depending on the model, BTO option, etc.

i just tell them... if i dont tell them and they really want to know, they can just go on the apple website anyway...

wow i never thought about how most people dont make the 3k a week my stepdad does. i hope that last post doesnt offend anybody
Actually, I was quite offended by all of those posts. I'm 25, and have a college degree and at the moment I'm working a job nowhere remotely in my field making $0.25/hr over minimum wage AND my salary last year when I did have a job (on contract) that required my degree was $39,000 which was very good starting pay for my field. My MBP was purchased out of savings my wife and I had built up for it b/c my other computer is an 8 year old desktop PC. Kid, I hate to think about what will happen one day when mommy and daddy aren't there to buy everything for you and you have to go out and pay your bills in the real world. Maybe by then the rest of us will have gotten this recession under control for you.

For where I live.

"The median income for a household in the city was $39,939, and the median income for a family was $49,247. Males had a median income of $36,457 versus $25,844 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,647. About 8.4% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.4% of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over."

no i posted it, then i was like "oh wait thats pretty not safe" but then i realized that i didnt care because if somebody wanted to kidnap me they would have to go through me and my parents. and we all have multiple guns. so im not to worried.

my parents are paying for just about everything till i get out of school and start work as an anesthesiologist. then im gonna pay them back.

like honda civic new car or corvette new car?

It doesn't really matter actually how much it costs. When I equate it with enough money that you could buy a new car for the amount it usually shuts people up. I mean when some people pay $2000 for a computer when they know my work setup costs well over 8 times that (even if we're talking a ****** civic) they understand it is a work investment and don't push the subject further.

Trust me, I wish I DIDN'T have to spend this much money on a damn computer system with all the cards, RAIDS and peripherals but alas, running a complete post production studio you gotta pay to be able to compete, especially in my location.
