If someone asks I'll tell them. If it turns into a flame war, I'll simply ask them to compare the cost of my machine to the cost of buying their machine once a year for 3 years. If it's someone I know, I might let them test drive it too :).

Just tell them the truth. Why lie to people?

Do you want them to think they can afford a Macbook when they can't? It's pointless..

Well, as one of those people for whom buying a sufficiently spec'ed MBP WOULD be an entire month's income, I'll tell them, but it's not really any of their business. Unless I'm in a particularly shady part of town, in which case I'll let them know that it was "about $800, but I bought it several years ago", which was at least true for my MB, but will require better acting for the MBA.

--chaoticbear, who makes about $22k/year

My usual reply is..." if you have to ask, you cant afford it nor would you appreciate it."

I could be considered a "dick" by most...and I don't really care. I describe it as sullied by life.

I think it's ok to tell anyone the price of the base model (e.g. "these machines start at $1199" if it's a MBA 13) - but the price for my specific configuration is nobody's business.

When I am asked I say it was a treat to myself and say how long I worked to buy it. I am a teen so my iMac took 1 year to earn enough money, I am now saving for a laptop. Can not wait for sb

I've noticed most people that ask me this question have a smug facial expression and pile of crap with an Acer emblem out in front of them. There is only one possible direction that conversation will take. They would never understand. So I don't waste my time, I just tell them that it's a rude question.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_6 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E200 Safari/6533.18.5)

Yeah but its a bit annoying because everyone asks. I still tell them though.

I just got a new MacBook Air. Was all happy with it, and didn't even mention it at school today. Got asked about 5 times that day.

It's not that they want to troll me or anything, and I don't know why everyone feels that it's their business to ask. I feel really weird for saving and buying macs and carrying around something worth $1699(not that I paid that much for it).

I live in a somewhat rural area, and almost no one has a Mac, and most people have never even seen one. They ask a lot of questions and one of them is how much I paid for it. I almost always lie to them. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because $2500 is what they make in a month and a half and I feel really bad about that.
So when people ask how much your Mac costs what do you tell them?

This thread is funny. $2500 is more like what people make in less than 2 weeks and spending $2500 on a new computer sounds retarded.

Im in cupertino.
Its not a poor/ ghetto place more of rich. (I mean Apple is like 20min away).
Yes I tell them if they ask.
2.5K for a 17in Mac.

Everybody has something they have that they don't need, it just makes them happy. I tell people that i got it for $1300 (in Australia they are $1400 so I got a hundred dollar discount :D ) and if they argue i tell them it makes me happy. Some people like to have thousand dollar birds, they could get one from the pet store for 5 dollars couldn't they? :)
I am far from rich, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't enjoy what I can afford just because other people cant. In Africa people are starving to death, should I starve also? No, but I should appreciate that I have food on my plate.

I've never had anyone ask me(it's pretty easy to find the price online??), but if someone did I'd just tell them what I paid. Don't ask if you don't want the answer...

if you only make 36k a year how do you afford to live, let alone spend 3k on a computer?

You'd be surprised to know how many people live with that. I make $0/yr right now... ya I'm unemployed. I have barely enough to get by and I have loans from my wifes medical school. Yet I took the plunge and the MBP as it is more of an investment for me. Well, the work I do here can only be done on a Mac and should pay off sooner or later.

I just tell people my 17" pro was a result of an entire season of umpiring Softball games. All those game fees paid for it :D

I tell them $1,200 plus the 3-year Apple Care warranty for $300, so that's a total of $1,500. Most people say, "Wow".

First of all I don't have friends so mostly nobody asks.

If they do ask, its none of their business what MY things cost. They're MINE. I am very anti-social and rabidly defensive of MY possessions. If they did ask, I would be suspicious and consider them rude.

The laptop belongs to me. My property. Understand that.
