I just tell the the truth, £1700 for a 17"MacBook Pro. If they react a bit shocked about it, I just explain I'm planning on having it up to 5 years and its not much more than two or more cheaper laptops over the same amount of time.

For where I live.

"The median income for a household in the city was $39,939, and the median income for a family was $49,247. Males had a median income of $36,457 versus $25,844 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,647. About 8.4% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.4% of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over."

A few months ago I read of a study done by some college professors which concluded that the actual poverty line for a family of four in the U.S. should be $65,000- per year.

Also worth noting is an article Harper's magazine published a couple of years ago which pointed out that the Federal government over the last three plus decades has systematically rigged the inflation index, so much so that if this was not done the average Social Security check would be twice what it is now.

For some people that have the audacity to question a person for spending so much on a Mac, I'd like to know how so many women can justify spending the same amount for a Louis Vuitton bag that does nothing more than make a person look like a rich bitch snob. :p

I would bet that over 90% of women who have a Louis Vuitton handbag and who have a laptop own an Apple.

They wouldn't be caught dead using anything else.

What do they define as poverty?

I think it's rude to ask, but people do it anyways; just like some people like ask how much you make and where you live.

I usually just tell them a bit over a thousand. Even then, people tell me I paid too much—that's when I stop talking to them and start ignoring them.
If I'm really annoyed I tell people I stole it. :D

Not having to go in debt to Visa and the like.

Having money for heath care, car insurance, the cable TV triple play and cell phone service. All the basics of an American "life". Paying the bills and getting by.

It sounded more than reasonable to me, unlike the absurd Federal government standard which basically only defines you as living in poverty if you are a single mother with children on welfare, a homeless man, or a homeless woman without children (in America you cannot live on the dole unless you are female and have children to support).

Most mainstream people gawk when you tell them that you paid $3,000+ for a computer. However, when you really look at what you get for the money, its very comparable to other manufacturers.

My general explanation to people is that I use it for work when I'm away from the office as well as personal use.

Also figure in that most Apple products hold value rather well, so you can probably get 50% of what you paid for the computer back if you sell it after 2-3 years.

My friend must be in the 10% crowd. She has everything in LV, but yet a Gateway PC user and works at MS.

I would if they did. I would tell the truth and if I didn't that would just be weird. Usually my Mac is in my room though, so not many people see it.

I don't understand why people say it's rude to ask. It seems like they would be interested in knowing how much something is worth.

When people ask me how much my 17 inch MBP costs, I tell them the truth. They are usually surprised at how low it did cost. (got it for $1200 :))

How'd you manage that?

If ot doesn't matter then why ask? Its not being snobby, it just feels awkward to have something that would be a month's income for some people.

As a student who earns his living completely by himself my sweet 13 was 3 times the money I had for ALL necessary expenses per month. But why should someone feel good/bad/awkward/ashamed because of his better income and possibilities? Maybe you are a total sucker in social life and other people live in fulfilled harmony. Should they feel sorry because of that? ;)

are you insane?

yeah,I was at the time, but i forgot to mention the PB G4's screens were both dead and both had one broken hinge but both worked fine in desktop mode. The dude killed all the Clamshells not even a week later and then came back trying to get the MB,but,it's not my fault he kills computers in a week.

I've only ever met one person who will ask me every time I buy something new "how much was that"? They do it out of pure envy. I think it's rude and lazy. Rude because it's none of their business and lazy because everything can be looked up online to get a general idea of how much it cost.

there usually is an awkward silence when i say the price of my macs and stuff since most people are all

"OMFG WHY WOULD YOU PAY THAT MUCH YOU SUCKER HAHAHA I CAN MAKE THE SAME THING WITH LESS THAN 2000LIRAS (approx 1300dollars but yeah)"

in which case i have to justify my purchase or whatever to the point where i am trying to please the person just so theyll like my 'shiny new aluminum thing'.

why does apple tend to attract me more than the clappy* pc laptops out there? I dont know honestly,in my case i feel better and work better and work more on my mbp than my sony vaio fw560f (although it is a great laptop) i just dont like it. I dont want to own something i dont like just because its got better performance and stuff.

the fact that the laptop itself makes me feel like a god while typing is paramount for my case.

i cant say for sure but every other laptop out there bugs me in a way that after a year or so i end up hating that one and looking for another one but nay, i still adore my 2007 mbp which was an awesome piece (and probably the best until my new mbp) of equipment and still is. I even had the defective 8600 chipset and had to replace the motherboard. TWICE. but i still think its better then the other laptops out there.

*: that "l" is actually an "r"

I ALWAYS tell people how much my MBP costed.

It costed $0.00. Apple is a great company. They sent it to me for free since my old MBP was such a goddamn lemon.

I admit though the reason my old MBP was so bad was actually nVidia's fault and not really Apple's.

I did spend $300 however to upgrade the RAM to 8 GB.

I wouldn't just randomly tell them, that would be gloating... but if someone asks me how much my computer costs I'd tell them the truth - its not gloating if they asked - its only fair to tell them.

I live in a somewhat rural area, and almost no one has a Mac, and most people have never even seen one. They ask a lot of questions and one of them is how much I paid for it. I almost always lie to them. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because $2500 is what they make in a month and a half and I feel really bad about that.
So when people ask how much your Mac costs what do you tell them?

I'm in a similar situation, and my solution is to half dodge the question. Instead of saying, I usually say I got a really good price on a used machine before I start changing the subject. I think that's a fairly polite way to go about it.

I'm not exactly going to "flaunt" the price of my fricken' computer like its a BMW but if some smart ass with an acer netbook comes in with no other intentions than trolling and being a Mac hater I will. Seriously I get allot more flak for having a MBP than any other computer. I'm sick of people hating for no reason... I have a MacBook pro you don't or possibly I drive a BMW you have a bicycle suck it suck it bang bang!

I'd say "A MacBook costs $999, and it is possible to order a Mac Pro for $22,000 if you want".

If anyone asks, I'll tell him or her... unless it's my parents who are asking, in which case I'll just tell them the price of the base MBA 13 even if I bought the ultimate.

*sigh*

Why do apple owners always say their laptops are like luxury vehicles?

Makes all of us sound like ignorant douchebags. Btw if macbooks are anything they are honda civics or toyota camrys. Reliable with good resale values.
