Do you think Apple is 'arrogant' enough to release a 3.5" new iPhone this year?

Why would it bother you? You can get a 4" screen onto the 4/4s form factor with a change of aspect ratio so nothing would change besides the screen. I'm just curious why someone would be against this idea.

I'm not. I'm all for it if the dimensions of the phone remain the same. It's the most likely scenario if you ask me.

Last I checked the iPhone screen size has been 3.5" since 2007....5 frickin years and 5 generations ago!

You're right, it absolutely is time that the screen should become smaller. :D

Do you seriously believe that Apple would have problems making an iPhone with any screen size they want, from 1.5 inch to 20 inch? Do you seriously think making a bigger phone is progress? If the screen size stays at 3.5 inch, then it's because Apple believes that the majority of iPhone users will be happiest with that size, and if Apple believes that then it is because they have evidence.

Obviously any size will have some people who think it is too small, and some people who think it is too big. And obviously if you can't make a phone that is better in any way than the iPhone, you are going to produce one that is _different_ in some way to catch some people, which some Android makers do by making larger and sometimes ridiculously large phone. Take the Samsung Note - Samsung asks is it a phone? Or is it a tablet? And I say it's too big for a phone, too small for a tablet, and no use to anyone.

3.5 feet is definitely far too big.

For mobile, yes. In the living room, if you build it on a stand that allows rotation by 90 degrees, and add TV reception, you could probably sell a few thousand if the price is decent. Imagine Facetime on a 42 inch screen.

Pleased to hear that you're able to decide what is best for you. Truly, I hope that everyone who does want a bigger phone goes and buys one. If screen size is that important to you, then the iPhone clearly isn't for you.

You are 100% correct...the current iPhone might not be the one for my future. Unless you are on the inside of Apple you don't know if the iPhone of the future is for me or not. I really don't see how everyone downplays the screen size. I have a blackberrry 9930 for work and the screen size is much smaller and inferior to the iPhone for many feautures of use. It works, but it is not as good. The same can be said of the iPhone size compared to other more optimal sizes. I don't like the super big ones either, but that is not what is being debated. Just an increase in size is needed for the type of use that the phones are being used for nowadays.

People defended 3g as oppose to 4g saying it is perfectly fine. Now people defend 3.5 as oppose to bigger size saying the same thing. Fine, fine... I get it... people don't like change and are perfectly content with being complacent in their life. Nothing wrong with that...but, I am not afraid of change and welcome it openly. Nothing wrong with choices. Most defending it will be the first to get it if Apple announces it and then will be the first to start fighting and shoeing people away that want to push the envelope with more changes and options on Apple's next phone design.

This is depressing arguing about preferences.

It's not do much about being afraid of change as saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If Apple decide to increase the screen size then no doubt I will buy the larger phone (within reason). But for me (and millions more), as it stands, the iPhone does the job I/ we want it to.

my comments were more addressed at the OP who seemed to be asserting that because he wants a larger screen, Apple are being arrogant in not bending to his wishes. And, admittedly, the wishes of a (vocal) minority of iPhone users.

Myself, I hope that the design of the phone becomes less fragile but that's my personal preference. I'm not going to be upset if it doesn't happen.

Where is the arrogance?

Apple has played with several sizes, and form factors with the iPods.
Which one has been the most successful of all of them?

The difficulty to have a larger screen in the iPhone is the impact on the Apps, and how they will look.

The Retina display is great. Apple will invest in new features to continue making the iPhone different from the rest, a larger screen size is not in the top of the list.

I know Apple doesn't believe in market research or what people on general think what their products need to be like. But I think the overwhelming majority of iPhone users want a bigger screen for the next iPhone. Now Apple would be really arrogant in ignoring all these people and to continue thinking they know what is best for their users in terms of how big a phone needs to be. If they release another 3.5 incher, it could be their first misstep in a long time which could even lead to them losing some of their market share to their competitors. I sincerely hope they are humble enough to listen to their customers who actually buy their products and make them the success they are.

Your fundamental premise is flawed.

There is no overwhelming demand for a larger screen size and Apple knows this. They have the best selling handset by far, outselling every other competitor.

They are not likely to change that "just because."

As for polls on the subject, self selecting Internet polling is never accurate. The people who support a subject vote. The majority never vote. The passionate in opposition vote. That's not statistically even remotely interesting.

I hope the screen size does not change. I like my iPhone to fit in my pocket.

And a dump truck to haul the thing around with.

People like you are the ones that drive me crazy. A dump truck to carry around the phone? Have you actually tried carrying a device larger than your iPhone? The galaxy note fit perfectly in my pockets. I wear a normal size (none of the skinny jean ****) 34 jean/short and it was perfect.

There are many ways apple can increase the screen size with minimal changes in actual physical size.

I wouldn't be surprised if it remained the same 3.5 inch screen size. Especially if the rumors of the 7.89 inch "iPad mini" come to fruition.

I think it would be nice to see Apple make some variations of the iPhone besides white and black (memory size nonwithstanding).

....Two of these people still haven't figured out how to make calls with their phones (they bought them in December)

Sorry to be kinda rude but PLEASE ask these people to not procreate.

I am ready for a larger screen but screen size is NOT the only reason I buy a phone. I will stick with iPhone because it offers ME the best bang for my buck in a kick butt, attractive, well made package.

If they can increase the screen without making the phone bigger, I'm all for it. Otherwise, not. That's what the iPad is for.

Almost all polls on this forum indicate people want a larger phone. A majority of the people and friends that I've spoken to want a larger screen. I know it is all anecdotal, but that doesn't make it not true. It is also true that once people switch to larger screens, they can never go back even of it means putting up with Android and its less than stellar user experience.

Also not true! I left the HTC Evo 4G for the iPhone 4S, so I went from a larger screen to smaller and don't regret it, at all. Stop trying to speak for everyone!

He said almost all polls indicated this. By far, a poll would imply he is speaking of the majority. The majority is not everyone, it is most people.

I find it fascinating that people attribute being satisfied with the iPhone as the cause for it being such a great selling device.

That isn't necessarily true. In my case, what other choice do I have after investing a couple hundred in apps and apple accessories? People don't buy the iPhone because it's the best device on the market (which it isn't as there are a few phones that are as good as the iPhone), they but it for the apple ecosystem.

If there was a radical change in hardware and design people would still flock to and buy it as its the only phone available to take advantage of the ecosystem in which they bought into.

I would really like Apple to increase the screen size without making the phone bigger that would be nice. But I wouldn't like a bigger phone close to 4.7"-5"

No, he didn't say that on going from a larger screen to smaller, he just says it's true! Re-read his post.

this is just my opinion/2 cents;

I think that when Apple does make the iPhone screen larger, they will release a phone that is seriously just a screen with virtually no bezel. I think the home button will be either eliminated or drastically changed, and the other buttons will remain on the sides of the phone. I don't see them making the entire device bigger, so the screen would be limited. I also do not think this will happen in the next gen release. JUST MY OPINION.

The software makes it the best device on the market.

Hopefully in the next release Apple will release multiple lines of iPhones. For those who want a 4" + screen they would have an option. For those of us who would rather have a smaller form factor and retain the 3.5" screen (or same form factor and slightly larger screen) we will continue to have an option. If they only go to a larger form factor and screen there will be alot of upset people.

Personally I don't see the benefit of most of the larger screens out there as most of them are lower resolution than the iPhone anyway. Just hold the dang iPhone closer if you want stuff to look bigger! It isn't like a laptop that you need to have a certain distance away in order to be ergonomically correct. For example the text on a 13" MBA is too small for my comfort vs. the text on a 13" MBP.

Anyway - options are always good.

Nintendo was "arrogant" enough to not release a HD console this generation and made a ton of money. Besides, this is usually what the consumer wants, which is more than enough reason not to listen to them:

"Almost all polls on this forum indicate people want a bigger phone"

To me, that is a pretty clear statement. Regardless, you are NEVER going to find an OPINION that 100% of people agree on. I will agree most people using a larger screen don;t want to go back down to a smaller one. Logically, that will also not be true in every case.

I'm happy with the screen size now.

I just think that this is a perfect screen size. Don't do it Apple!!
