The only benefit I found to turning off my iPad is when I need to recharge my iPad faster and to conserve battery run time.

There is nothing wrong with turning your iPad off when it's not in use. But I'm willing to bet that waiting for the iPad to boot up will get old pretty fast for the OP.

INSTANT WAKE FOR THE WIN!!!

I'll shut it off if I know I won't be using it at all or when I'm traveling. When I went to Europe last fall, my iPad 2 was shut off when I was asleep on the plane...figured I should save as much power as I could, just in case I got stranded without a power outlet later.

Other than that, its never truly shut off.

Apple claims 30 days battery in standby. They don't say how far the battery will fall in this amount of time. With my usage, I can get two days out of the device between charges, and have never noticed a drop in the percentage while the device is down. I use it pretty heavily.

where did you find that 30 day spec? i thought that was for the Macbook Air?
i was on Apple's iPad tech spec page and it only says usage time, not standby time

i have never shut my iPad 2 off since i bought it, August of last year.... maybe a restart here or there, but it is a tank! No reason to turn it off.

Actually, that might have been the MacBook spec I was thinking of. However, I found this: http://www.thetechchat.com/2012/04/21/ipad-2012-battery-life/ which states that the battery on standby consumes less than a percent in 8 hours. If we round that up, we can have 8*50% is 400 hours, or 16 days of standby to half charge, or 32 days to empty.

No repeat trials limits the usefulness of this, but it gives some rough idea.

i do to charge it

Erm.... doesn't yours turn on when you plug it in to charge though? I'm fairly sure mine does.

For the record, I don't turn mine off unless I'm packing it away for travelling etc. I do give it the occasional reboot though, especially after installing a bunch of new apps or updates.

Hmmmmm I put our new iPad to sleep with the smart cover at midnight last night showing 46% (it had just changed from 47%). Just opened it up at 11am and the battery is at 42%!!!!!

So a 4% loss of battery while in sleep mode for 11 hours!!!!! We don't have notifications on for anything on it and all apps had been shut down.

Did notice when charging it up last that it stopped charging a couple of times until I unplugged and then plugged the cable back in to the bottom of the iPad so thinking I may have a faulty iPad/battery???

***edit***

Battery is now 40% after coming to this site and writing this post!!!!

Cheers

Dave.

Reboot every once in a while, but can't remember the last time. Never turn it off. What's the point? Even when travelling you can put it in airplane mode to keep it from searching for networks.

The only time I turn my 4s off is when the battery dies. :D

One thing to keep in mind with battery discharge is that it's not linear; is exponential. Apple probably maps the discharge to a linear thing, but there's going to be inaccuracy introduced. I believe it discharges faster at first. Inverse for charging, so the closer to full the longer it takes.

no it doesnt. it goes to sleep. i prefer to charge all all my devices while actually powered off

The only times mine was off was when i have drained the battery to 0 and couldn't find my charger... which was like once.

Very rarely do i turn mine off. Usually only for like a software update. Other than an outlying circumstance, it's always on. Always connected and always ready to be played with :D

In my experience, Apple desktop and notebook computers seem to fare very well with few reboots. I use my MBP quite heavily for video/motion graphics work and tend to get between days and weeks before the system runs into a glitch or update requiring a reboot.

It's one of the things that most impressed me about apple products; and iOS devices seem to be an order of magnitude better, lasting between weeks and months, often only being necessitated only by an update or simply for peace of mind (in other words, they don't really need it at all, but when I have a spare moment, I feel better knowing I have 'refreshed' things.)
