Wow, this is so weird to read. I use mine in the evening and turn it off every night, I assumed everybody did this! I take it I'm not hurting it by doing this?

no it doesnt. it goes to sleep. i prefer to charge all all my devices while actually powered off
"No it doesn't?" Then you have the only iPad that acts that way.

Every other iPad, iPhone, or iPad touch--if completely shut down--turn on when connected to power. Always. Since the very first iPhone.

Charging iOS devices when completely off also doesn't do much (the only way to do so is to turn it off while it is already charging). The ability to do that is only there in case the device cannot turn on from battery alone. Ergo, when the battery is so dead the device won't turn on it will turn itself on after charging to 5% so that it can then charge properly.

my bad, i read that as turn off instead of turn on. Yes they turn on when you plug them in and I hate it! i always plug mine in to charge then cut it completely off by doing a shutdown. I prefer to charge all of my devices while off. IMO this will decrease charge time and provide a more complete charge. I have always hated the way apple devices cut them selves on when you plug them in

i just picked one up today, curious is it advised to turn it off at night or when not in use?

There is no harm in leaving it on all the time. I got my iPad (3rd gen) on launch day and since I turned it on, I don't think I've ever turned it off or even restarted mine yet.

I've noticed the battery draining like mad lately when it's just sleeping. Rebooting sometimes helps. Considering just keeping it off when not in use.

I'm the anal-retentive type that likes to shut off or reset the iPad every few days - in my head, I feel like it clears out the RAM and starts fresh.

As far as battery life goes, however, I just don't think shutting it off really adds too much. I've unplugged my iPad and left it at 100% overnight - the next morning, I'm still looking at 100% battery life.

Apple did a good job of ensuring that sleep mode does very little to drain the battery.

Not really, never really had to reboot other then the few apps I had to install via Cydia that require reboots.

I've never turned off my iPhone nor iPad, not even my desktop. I let sleep mode do its thing. I don't like waiting for things to boot up every day. Maybe that's just me?

I don't think I've turned off my iPad since I got it. Occasionally I'll reboot my 4S when I'm having 3G connection issues.

Well our new iPad has just been in sleep mode for the last 24hrs it was at 96% when I put it in sleep mode last night and just looked now and it's gone down to 80%!!!

So a drain of 16% whilst in sleep mode in 24hrs with no notifications on and we don't use the email app or icloud and it's a wifi only model too so no cellular activity!!!!

Surely this can't be normal????

Cheers

Dave.

Is there evidence to support your theory?

The clearing of ram on shutdown is not a theory. Ram is volatile and will clear everything once it has no power. It is not necessary to worry about clearing ram on a regular basis but ram management is not perfect and poorly coded apps will often still populate the ram and not clear what it has used to allow other apps to access it. This is called memory leak and a restar will fix it.

I am with others on this. I don't shut it down but do reboot it maybe once or twice a month to keep best performance.

That's pretty normal. I have similar drops in both my iPad 2 and 3. What helps for me is to turn off Bluetooth if you're not using it. Also when in Sleep Mode put the iPad in Airplane Mode. That will turn off all radio scans while in sleep mode. You should get much better results. I have.

Yes if your iPad or iPhone are off and I mean power completely off and you plug it in to a wall outlet yes it will turn on. If you don't touch the device it will go to sleep. So really no reason to ever turn off the devise to charge just leave it sit in sleep mode, and NO YOU COULD NEVER CHARGE THE IPAD OR IPHONE WHILE ACTUALLY POWERED OFF!!!

Makes me laugh to read things that can't even bet rue.

Edit: Well I guess you could turn the power off while it was plugged in. But then you would not get your phone calls and text messages and really I don't think it would charge that much faster imo. But if you think it makes a difference then it's whatever.

My iPad is currently charging in Sleep Mode @ 83%. I just turned it off to see if it will charge to 100%. Every one of my non Apple portable devices charges with the device turned off.

I guess you didn't read my post. Anyway I don't really care. I never really noticed any difference, but if you did it's what ever.

I still have no idea what you are talking about. In any event with my iPad powered off it went from 84 to 98%. Like you said whatever.

I never have bluetooth switched on so that's not an issue for me. It's also a wifi only ipad 3 so no cellular activity just the wireless side of things.

I've tried putting it into airplane mode this morning before i came to work so will check it when i get home. That'll be a period of 12 hours in sleep mode which on previous occurances has resulted in a drop of around 8% in the past.

Hopefully it'll be a little better tonight when i get home and check. :)
