I agree with you and others that have said it does not affect how I use my iPhone. But………for quality control sakes….it really should not rattle at all. Just saying…….. Unless there is an app out there that uses the shake effect to use the app there is no need to shake a phone. But you can say the same thing about any product. If i shake my MBA…..i would expect it NOT to rattle.

Are you sure it shouldn't rattle ?
We don't know what is the rattling part.
We don't know if it isn't something related to the power button which is there to improve it reliability (Apple had some issue in the past regarding power buttons ) ....

If you shake a blue ray player, for instance, maybe it will rattle. Is it defective ?
As far as it didn't affect my real life usage, FOR ME this is not an issue.

I said iPhone 6S, not a beta-phone. ;) Have also 2-year contract with my carrier too so that's also why. :p

I was quite satisfied by iPhone 3G , iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, in the past, so I could be a beta tester again ....

I only buy unsubsidized phone: I don't like to be chained to any Carrier.

Does anyone have an iPhone 5s that DOESN'T rattle?

Relax, was teasing you a bit. :D

Well, here in Sweden it cost 8500 SEK (960 EUR) for a 64GB-unit. It's the most expensive phone on the market. But, if you choose right carrier, like I did, it wi cost totally 6300 SEK (710 EUR). It is still expensive compared to Android-phones but as an Apple-product it's "normal."

I had 4S before, some Android-phone between, and before 4S also an Android-phone. Now it would be hard and painful to take a divorce with my carrier, which I btw like a lot because I can talk and text how much I want to every other domestic carrier just for 53 EUR (474 SEK) a month but that includes the phone as well. Otherwise it costs 28 EUR a month.

The only thing I hate about Apple is that they only have 1-year guaranty and 90 days free support here.

If it was mean't to rattle then they ALL would rattle. Obviously that is not the case as others here in this thread have stated they have iPhones that do not rattle.
Your example is not the same thing….the iPhone has no moving parts. the blue ray player in your example does…..the Dvd tray. So just for grins……shake your Macbook Pro, iMac or any other phone not made by Apple….if it rattles……be honest….wouldn't that concern you? Of course it would. Especially when expectations say they should not rattle. C'mon just be honest…..

Well then return your phone, and those other 49 till you are feeling satisfied. But if you really think that some member here has that unique iPhone 5S without ANY little button-rattle, you are dead wrong. And that member STILL claims that, well tube it and paste a link here then please. Because I just want to know out of "curiosity" is it zero, one, 10 or 20 users in the world who really have this. Which means that everyone who claimed that they didn't had any of this so far here, are not simply trusted enough for me. I need something I can rely on, not some fake fact.

Every carrier here in my country sells 5S who ALL have same "defect." Everyone of them. So dude, chill. This is still a forum, and people can sometimes make elephants out of a fly. However, if Apple themselves claimed that this was an "manufacturing error", I think they would act very fast on this. It's expensive to recall all those phones yes, but it's even harder to rebuild a reputation.

So love it or hate it. But if you still hate it, get rid off it and buy something else.

Same prices here in Italy, and our wages are lower than yours ;)
By the way, in Italy warranty is two years (the second through the vendor, Apple itself if you buy at the Apple Store): it should be the same in Sweden, since it is European law ...

Well, my wife's S4 Mini rattles in almost the same way (but it seems to be the volume button) ...
Btw I'm not concerned at all, otherwise I'd have it changed the day after purchase.

Thanks for that but…….read my reply….never once did i say i hated my iPhone.
I am debating whether to return it for one that does not rattle. So I agree with just about everything you wrote…but i think you misunderstand. Having phone rattle is not normal. So saying it is……is just lowering your expectations. It does not matter what carrier it is on…..it is a design or manufacturing defect. My Galaxy S4 does not rattle. The first production of the Nexus 5 phones had a rattle……now the second batch does not and you can return the Nexus 5 and get one that does not rattle.
So saying that Apple DESIGNED the iPhone 5s to rattle is just not being honest.
Google it….it is a well known and discussed defect…

I understand exactly what you meant, and I was disappointed as hell too. I wrote earlier that in this thread in November and December last year. Especially when my old 4S didn't had that. But what choice did I had? Return it and get money back and buy then what? LG G2 who has crappier camera, plastic design and only 32GB? Or Sony Xperia Z1 who is really good in everything except that it has a size of a brick.

Nexus 5 has different buttons and that was the home button who was affected btw. My old Nexus 4 rattle a bit, but that's the sensor inside the camera.

Yes I agree that Apple was a bit sloppy when they made this, but this phone is - unlike Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 - molded in one piece. Making this, especially in aluminum, really difficult to design things that might give a sound. Buttons at the side are designed differently and this is basically an iPhone 5. I felt at numerous 5S in the stores here (a lot!) and they were exactly the same. The aluminum chassis is the one that cause this I'm afraid. Because 5C hasn't this at all, and yes I tested many of them as well.

So I decided to keep it anyway and see what the future brings. Cause I just can't find a phone today that fits my needs as this one does. What Apple will do its up to them. Either try to solve this or get a bad reputation in quality, something they really don't want in these days when we have phones like Sony Xperia Z1. That phone has superb quality. But unfortunately to big for me. But here comes the question: HOW will they solve it without redesign it or make a completely new chassis which means new phone?

I agree with you about the iPhone fitting needs…..it is my fav and I have had a ton of phones the last 12 months……..But I keep coming back to the iPhone…...

We know exactly where it is coming from! put your finger on the power button and the rattle stops. Its the button that isn't seated firmly. Surely this is not rocket science to fix!? They can design touch id yet cant design a simple power button to sit properly!? Its not like they haven't already done it before!? Bizzar!

Its a cheaper phone isn't it? The less I pay, the less I expect to be right. The more I pay, the more I expect to be right!
If everyone purchased a phone outright without thinking they are getting a cheap or free phone they would be more concerned about what quality they are getting for the money!
Believe you me, I know because I don't take contracts, I always buy the phone outright. It hurts more!

Today I upgraded to 5s and just noticed that it does rattle.. what makes it to rattle, any ideas?

At least on my unit it isn't the power button itself, but something below it.
The button is perfectly seated in its place.
Looking at the ifixit teardown, and at their spare parts list, I can see a small metallic loop behind the physical button.
Maybe it is the rattling part.

Is it specific to the size (16/32GB), color or seller (bestbuy/walmart/apple store).

I wonder whether Apple ships iphones randomly or keeps the best lot for Apple stores...???

Just as I thought, some guys had exactly same discussion in 2012 about the iPhone 5: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1449169/

I remember my home-/wake up-button was clicking too on my iPhone 4S, not the power button who was very solid. And did I complaint? Nope. That thing is appeared on my iPad 2 as well when you touch it carefully with the finger. The iPhone 5 and 5S have this because of the aluminum chassis. You really don't have to be Apple-engineer to understand this.

But hey, you can always do 5 things:

1) Return your 5S and get a new one again, and again, and again, and again, and 150x again.

2) You can return it, buy something else and live without the misery.

3) You can search entire Internet to find the answer at your question about this. And you'll still keep looking.

4) You can give it to Mythbusters.

5) You can just accept it as it is: as a phone, not as a Louis Vuitton-bag.

Yes of course they do. They are that greed and only want you to buy from Apple Store because those 5S aren't as retarded as those others in Best Buy, and especially in Walmart where only idiots shop.

^^

No it's not related to any color, size or vendor.
But believe me: without this thread I wouldn't have this "issue" discovered.
You HAVE TO search for it to hear it.

Well.. I myself bought it from bestbuy. The reason I suggested this because only third party stores (bestbuy/walmart) offer deals on iphones, not the apple stores. A company using multiple assembly plants can send specific lots to different stores based on known overall quality from that plant.

No they can't and yes they are all the same in every store, even Apple's. All units are coming from same Chinese Foxconn. So you can relax now. ;)

This thread keeps appearing on the first page, just WOW!

This will blow your collective mind...the few that DON'T rattle are defective! There is something stuck under the power button and / or the case is not assembled properly. The phones manufactured to correct tolerances have buttons that move freely in their respective case openings.

I have a 4 and a 4s. They are the same way but the heavier stainless steel dulls the sound. The aluminum sounds more hollow and resonates a bit more.

Mine doesn't rattle, neither it restarts by itself, the touch id works perfectly every single time , I have no problems with signal or wifi and the battery last all day using it heavily; I wanted to change my 5s 16g for a 32g but now I'm honestly scared to see all the problems other people have with their phone, I think I got lucky, and now I won't change it.

Ahahah .... this is a good example on how can macrumors forum scares people ...

Im onto my 3rd replacement within the last 7 days. 3rd currently on its way but last 2 had power button rattle. Put case on but didn't stop it. Could even hear it rattle through the earpiece when moving about. Apple store no help in fact denying that this issue even exists... calling me a liar then??

The store is so noisy you wouldn't hear a rattle even if the phone was full of rusty nails!!!!!
Anyway she kept referring to the home button of which I kept correcting her so clearly shes just trying to throw her weight and not listening to my issue. Clearly a waste of space.

Apple online much more helpful although you have to fight your case to get a retail replacement and to be honest I think I only managed it because Id only just got the phone out of its sealed box before reporting the issue. Apple store will refuse to give you a retail and you will have to have a refurb even if the phone is barely 5 mins old. Strange setup!

Hopefully 3rd time lucky.

Just for the record the first 2 were week 48 build and the 3rd on its way is week 52. Quite a jump considering they were all shipped within 7 days.

Will report on 3rd when it arrives tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Stick with it or buy the 32gb and if ok send 16gb back otherwise send 32gb back or just settle for what is most important to you.

My home button squeaks/ makes a clicking sound when pressed but otherwise it doesn't rattle when the phone is shaken for example. All my iPhones have had squeaky home buttons in the past so I'm not bothered.

If you purchase via the UK on-line store a UK Apple retail store will not process a return or refund just offer a warranty refurb unit via the Genius Bar.

I order on-line and I've had a number of replacement 5S's. In each case I requested a replacement within the remorse period (typically 14 days from delivery in the UK except xmas which is extended). I encountered no issues with Apple supplying brand new "retail" replacement units. Similarly you can request to return the 5s for full refund within the remorse period and if you purchased on-line Apple will arrange collection and process the refund quickly.
