I have a Late 2005 Power Mac G5 DC 2Ghz, with 4GB RAM, and 2 1TB 7200 HDD's, also including a GeForce 6600.

And yes, this is my main computer used for all tasks. Works beautifully.

Hoping to sometime get a 2005 15" 1.66Mhz PowerBook G4, or perhaps a 12". Not sure.

I also have a Mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro with stock configuration.

(Ugh, this thread is already making me feel self absorbed.)

The 2005 1,66 Ghz powerbook G4 was my most favourite "daily driver" laptop ever. I went trough university with it and it never failed me. It's a shame software support quickly dwindled after the intel introduction the year after. But the MacBook pro's have never felt as personal afterwards as those.

After I've sold everything I plan to sell my list will be down to:
iBook G4 1.33GHz

:D

AHenry,
You love black. Forget the 'black' MacBook, as all those in the know rightly say, the chances are high that you'll suffer from buyers remorse sooner rather than later. Get yourself what kept me (and a teenage relation - wife's niece) fascinated yesterday aftenoon. It wasn't Intel powered, nor G4, and its not only curvy & sexy to look at, but also has 1 Gb memory and an SSD. And... it's.........black! A G3 Pismo! Don't under-estimate these very collectable machines, which will still be going strong when the black Macbooks have split their casings and joined the landfills.

My apologies, this was meant to be posted in his 'Making the jump' thread.

I'm pretty sure "Making The Jump!" is thread of the month.

It's just so active. Every time I'm here, there's always a notification from something or other within it.

Such wow.

Which is your favourite Desktop and Laptop?

This is quite the difficult question to answer LOL. I'm going to answer this in two parts, the first being the ones I like the most overall, and the ones I like for their performance, specs, etc.

So first off is the ones I like over all. I have three overall favorite desktops; my PowerMac G5, my G4 Cube, and my Macintosh 512ke. The G5 was my first PowerPC Mac and my second Mac overall. This one computer has singlehandedly changed my whole life, by causing me to collect 40 more Apple computers over these past 3 years. This also introduced me to these forums and to many people whom i have become great friends with and have been in contact with every single day for the past 3 years. The Cube is by far the most A E S T H E T E I C computer I own. Its an absolute beauty and a design piece in my room, despite being plugged in and ready for use. It has some absolutely superb Apple Harmon/Kardon speakers, and a fantastic keyboard. Lastly, the 512ke. Whats not to say about this machine? I think I'd have to go with this as my favorite machine altogether. Designed in 1984 and built in 86, complete with a rare 2MB MacSnap RAM upgrade with SCSI, in absolute pristine, non-yellowed condition, with working keyboard, mouse, and original bag, this computer is breathtaking still to this day. I had wanted a Macintosh since 2011 right after I got my first Mac, my 2011 MBP. I tried to win one on eBay, but failed miserably. Shortly after getting my G5, in January of 2015, I finally got one off of Craigslist and became friends with the seller. From the moment I first saw it, I was completely awestruck by its timeless design. Next, here are my favorite desktops based on their specs. First is my Mac Pro 1,1, which I'm using to type this right now. I absolutely love this machine, with its dual 2.66GHz quad core Xeons, 16GB RAM, and 3TB HDD. Its my most powerful desktop Mac, and one of my main machines that I use daily. The second is my custom-built Gaming PC. Despite its lack in processing power, it makes up for it in the graphics department with it's GTX 1070. It also has 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a 1TB HDD. Its decent and runs all the games I toss at it at around 40~60 FPS. Eventually it'll be upgraded with an upcoming Coffee Lake CPU.

Now for the laptops. Again, first bunch will be overall, second will be best performance. So my favorite laptops overall would have to be my 2011 13in MBP, my ThinkPad T61, and my PowerBook G4 15in DLSD. The 2011 13in MacBook Pro... My first Mac, and by far my favorite laptop. It has been a solid performer for the past 6 years. Given to me by my parents for my birthday, that was one of the happiest moments of my childhood. I was beyond excited to finally own a Mac after begging my parents to get an iMac to replace our crappy dell desktop. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. It was fast, sleek, thin, and ran Mac OS X, which was so advanced and fast compared to Windows XP. From the moment I turned it on for the first time, I was hooked on Macs and never looked back to Windows as my only OS ever again. Macs have become an integral part of my life and who I am, all thanks to this one laptop. Next up is my ThinkPad T61. Another obsession of mine is ThinkPads. I LOVE their classic models and their industrial design, durability, and feeling. In the middle of my Mac collecting, I decided to try and pick up some ThinkPads too, and so I got the T61, which has become my favorite PC Laptop. Despite not even being close to my most powerful laptop, it still runs decently fast and handles many tasks with ease. Lastly, my 15in DLSD is quite the powerhouse. It handles everything I toss at it with ease, and has a beautiful display, case, and design. I'd also like to honorably mention my 12in PowerBook G4 and my GigaTiBook, which have two of my favorite Mac Laptop designs. Finally, my favorite laptop based on performance and specs is my Mid 2012 15in MacBook Pro. This thing is everything I could ever ask for in a laptop. Its a POWERHOUSE thanks to it's maxed out specs. It has a 2.7Ghz i7, 16GB RAM, soon to have dual 500GB SSDs, and built-to-order High Resolution, Anti-Glare display. The battery easily lasts all day, and runs windows 10 and High Sierra like a champ. Its nearly on par with Apple's current offerings. Its the perfect marriage of modern and classic design as well, featuring ThunderBolt, USB 3, BT4.0, while retaining FW800, SD Card slot, upgradability, and prior to my removal, an Optical Disk drive. I use it as my daily laptop in school and throughout the day.

Sorry about the longevity of this, so TL;DR time:

Desktops Overall:
1. PowerMac G5
2. PowerMac G4 Cube
3. Macintosh 512ke

Desktops based on Specs:
1. 06 Mac Pro
2. Custom-built Gaming PC

Laptops Overall:
1. Late 2011 13in MBP
2. ThinkPad T61
3. PowerBook G4 15in DLSD
(Honorable Mention: 12in PowerBook G4, 1GHz PowerBook G4 Titanium)

Laptop based on Specs:
1. Mid 15in 2012 MacBook Pro

Hey everyone,

Lately I have been thinking... I have WAY too many computers in general, mostly PowerPC Macs. I am NOT here to boast, I just want to know if there is anyone on MacRumors who is crazier than I am!

While I have more than just PowerPC computers, I am gonna list just the PowerPC ones. Hopefully someone tops my list. I am aware of certain collectors who have many more PowerPC Macs than I do, but this is in terms of MacRumors users who stroll the PowerPC section. I can fit all of these on display except for the two duplicate iMac G3s, which reside in a closet.

-PowerMac G3 Desktop (beige)
-PowerMac G3 Minitower (beige)
-PowerMac 4400/200
-PowerMac G3 B&W
-PowerBook G3 (bronze keyboard)
-iBook G3 (Firewire)
-2 iBook G3s (Snow-2002)
-2 iMac G3 Indigos
-iMac G3 Flower Power
-2 iMac G3 Lime (tray-loaders)
-iMac G3 Tangerine (tray-loader)
-iMac G3 Grape (tray-loader)
-iMac G3 Graphite
-iMac G3 Ruby
-iMac G3 Rev. B.
-iMac G3 Blueberry (slot-loader)
-iMac G3 Lime (slot-loader)
-PowerMac G4 (2000)
-2 PowerMac G4 Cubes
-PowerMac G4 Quicksilver
-PowerMac G4 MDD
-PowerMac G5 (OG: DP 2Ghz)
-PowerMac G5 (Quad)
-PowerBook G4 Titanium
-PowerBook G4 Aluminum
-2 iBook G4s
-iMac G4
-eMac G4
-iMac G5 (iSight)
-iMac G5 (original)

If I am correct, I counted 35 total PowerPC Macs. :D
Give me an iBook...I am in the hunt for a decent one... possibly a 466 Se graphite ;)

My T61 runs Lion quite solidly and, in many ways, better than my MacBook 2,1.

Where were you a week or so ago? I was attempting to give away an iBook G4 in excellent condition. Not a single person took me up on the offer.

Great write up! I love the enthusiasm. You've got yourself an amazing collection.

I would agree that in terms of being the pinnacle of Power Mac awesome-ness, the G5 was number one. Apple really got it right with the Late '05 DC and QC. It would have been great to see Apple/IBM eventually reach that Quad (or Octo) 3Ghz mark and push forward with the G5 for another couple of years before ending their life.

I also use my Mac Pro (Early '08) as my main daily driver, with all of the other desktops reachable from a single Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Magic Mouse (via Synergy). It feels like a very wide extended desktop and each display has a driving Mac with it's own resources, so nothing in my workflow ever seems to get bogged down.

I believe that in terms of aesthetics, the PowerBook 12" is the finest Apple pre-Intel portable, despite some thermal and GPU shortcomings. My Pismo ranks high in my admiration too.

The Unibody design for the MBP '11 which began with the Late '08 MacBook is gorgeous to work on. I've had my Unibody '08 from new. Being my first Intel Mac, it introduced me to Bootcamp, VMWare/Parallels and Wine for running all kinds of x86 software on a Mac.

Here's my current PowerPC inventory to contribute to the thread:
1. Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz, 3GB, FX 5200 - 2004
2. Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz, 8GB, 6800 GT - 2004
3. Power Mac G5 DualCore 2.3Ghz, 16GB, Quadro FX 4500 - 2005
4. Power Mac G4 Sawtooth 350Mhz, 768MB, Radeon 9700 - 1999
5. Power Mac G4 Sawtooth 350Mhz, 512MB, Rage 128Pro - 1999
6. Mac mini G4 1.42Ghz, 1GB - 2005
7. PowerBook G3 Pismo 400Mhz, 1GB - 2000
8. PowerBook G4 Titanium 867Mhz, 1GB - 2003
9. PowerBook G4 12" 1.5Ghz, 1.25GB - 2005
10. PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz, 2GB - 2005
11. PowerBook G4 17" 1.67Ghz, 2GB - 2005

Intel line up:
1. Mac Pro Octo 3.2Ghz, 16GB, GTX680 - 2008
2. MacBook Unibody 2.0Ghz, 8GB - 2008
3. MacBook Unibody (White) 2.16Ghz, 4GB - 2009 (For the wife)
4. iMac 3.06Ghz, 4GB - 2009
5. AppleTV 1st Gen 1Ghz, 256MB - 2007
6. Dell Vostro 270s i5 3.3Ghz, 4GB - 2010-ish (For the kids + Netflix)

The iMac is a new addition as of yesterday. I like it and it runs well enough, but I am considering gifting it to my girl. I think she deserves a bigger screen than the MacBook :)

In bold are the ones that were out of order and have been corrected. Everything afterwards was in order correctly. I add the computers to the list as I receive them, so after the bolded ones is when my collection began to take off and I was actively maintaining my collection list. My newest addition, the Mid 2010 17in MacBook Pro I will be getting tomorrow and am quite excited for it. Its my first 17in MacBook Pro, my newest 17in laptop, and quite possibly the only 17in MacBook Pro to not have any issues whatsoever. The 2006-2008s all had graphics related issues, the 2009s had capacitor issues, and then more graphical failures with the last generation 2011s. The Mid 2010 is believed to not have the capacitor problems that plagued the 2009 17ins and the 2009 and 2010 15ins, but has not been confirmed yet by anyone who is familiar with the capacitor issue because the 2010s are very hard to come by. Fortunately, I have a friend who retired his for a new 2016 tbMB and only reason I knew of it was because I was telling him about some new stuff in my collection and he mentioned it. So it worked out quite well that I get my one of most desired Intel Macs, with the nearly maxed out 2.66GHz i7 instead of the 2.8GHz. It'll be getting 8GB RAM and an SSD of sorts, just to give it added speed. In terms of capability, its essentially on par with my Late 2011 13in, but it has the added bonus of an Anti-glare display, ExpressCard, 3 USB ports, discrete graphics, and of course, the 17in 1920x1200 display to top it all off. Very excited to get this thing tomorrow.

The 8500 was a solid Mac, I really admired it’s design.

So your last comment... the 8500 is my goto OWR Mac. I have owned 3, and now am on my 3rd one. The first one I got had a PSU failure and was barely used by me. I then got a new appreciation for them and got a second one, and used it since around March when I got my SE as an AppleTalk/AppleShare host. I even added a ZIP drive to my Mac Pro in order to get files to and from it. I had it plugged into ethernet as well, so it could do it’s own browsing in Classilla. I then had my Macintosh SE and my 512ke wired into the 8500 via AppleTalk and could easily send files between them without the need for diskettes. I was even able to do installations on my SE, my PowerBook 5300c, and my Duo 210 from the 8500 either via AppleShare or via SCSI disk mode (OWR Target Disk Mode). I had it fitted with a 400MHz Sonnet G4 as well as a decent amount of RAM. Sadly, upon bringing it back up stairs after being in my basement after my room being painted and delayed for 1.5 months, I was unable to boot off anything SCSI/SATA based. I then got a 3rd 8500 which works fine. Upon swapping in the G4 however, the same behavior occurred. So I have reason to believe there is something wrong with my G4. I’m still in the process of moving all my components into 8500 III, but I’m just about done.

Funny thing about these 8500s and most of my collection. They all come from a friend of mine, a retired teacher at my school. He was a Mac Collector of sorts, but he bought all these Macs brand new. He was one of the few people to hold onto Apple in its dark times and really liked what they had to offer. Now that’s he’s getting a bit older (and a little senile, I have to remind him who I am some times :p ), he doesn’t have time to maintain his collection, and doesn’t want them around the house anymore (or at least his wife doesnt), so he’s glad to give them to me, who is using and taking care of them.

So that’s my 2cents on 8500s, which when working, are fantastic machines!

That's a lot of machines for somebody so young.

How do you navigate around your room?! I have 6 computers total and that's too much even for me!

Give me an iBook...I am in the hunt for a decent one... possibly a 466 Se graphite ;)

A 'Clamshell' iBook won't be cheap, due to speculators jacking their [perceived] value up. However, iBook G3s (snow) and iBook G4s are at rock-bottom value right now. You could get a nice one from eBay, for about $50 or so.

I am planning on getting one of those too, because it was my 2nd Mac, and I agree iBooks G3 prices are sky high for no apparent reason, I mean, everything "old" made by Apple does not particularly make it collectable or valuable...

If I can get a good condition G3 i might bite the bullet though..

the PowerPC Macs i had were

iBook G3 466 SE Graphite
iBook G4 500 Mhz
iMac G4 15" 700 Mhz (I still own this machine)
PowerMac G4 (recetly bought that)
Mac Mini G4
PowerBook G4 12" (that's another I would want to have)
PowerBook G4 Ti

So the first on the list is my next purchase :D

@Gamer9430 You should get your hands on a Mac Pro (although, your main is already better than the first editions of the Mac Pro). It's like having a PowerMac G5, yet it's infinitely better than THE PowerMac G5.

Switching from my daily-used PowerMac G5, to my 2006 Mac Pro (and then 2009 Mac Pro) was magnificent.

I do not have a Mac Pro, nor a G5 ...... my "main computer" is an iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd gen), everything else is PowerPC!

Sorry, my comment was directed towards Gamer. I should have left his quotation in.
