Fair enough.

Will you keep No 1? If only to see whether he/she/it does proceed with the process of metamorphosis this coming spring.
Yes I’ll be keeping him. And the two will be kept in separate tanks. We shall see what happens. Just got an email back from the company telling me they’ll send it out tomorrow. I’ll keep this thread updated.

Do, please, keep the thread updated.

I suspect that No 1 might resume his transformation in spring; it will be interesting to see what No 2 does, or at what stage of development he is at. Have the company any explanation or thoughts on the matter?

They’re not sure themselves. They said as long as I’ve been following all the instructions it shouldn’t take more than 8 weeks to fully transform. It must be a very small mom n pop type company because they replied to my email on a Sunday afternoon.

Alright, I gotta ask....do/will they have names? If not, it sounds like a good thread topic to help you. We’d all be toad-ally hoppy to help!

Has something like this occurred before with anything (of the tadpole variety) sent out by the company?

They haven’t said anything about that, and this is my first time ordering anything from them. But seeing as how they were so quick to offer a replacement I’m sure it’s not the first time they’ve dealt with this. They do have some other cool products and I feel like a 7 year old when I order from them, but it’s these little things in life that bring me joy! The butterfly kit looks fun.

Well I have a developed frog in my business and his name is Steve Jobs (my business is a phone repair shop). I didn’t order him from this company though, I ordered him on Amazon from Grow-a-Frog and he’s no fun because he’s just a tiny aquatic frog, it’s basically like having a pet fish. That’s why I was so excited for this leopard frog tadpole, because it’s supposed to be an actual land frog, and a super cool looking one at that. This tadpole’s name is Elon Musk. I haven’t picked a name yet for this next one that’s gonna be arriving this week so I’m open to suggestions! I was thinking Woz?

If I remember correctly (biology and keeping normal tadpoles many years ago) you can force metamorphosis by using iodine (Creating Thyroxine?) Seaweed etc has a lot in it. However, I would certainly research this before chucking a load of liquid iodine in the tank... Might be worth talking to your supplier about it.

Water quality is one of the biggest variables with anything fish tank'ish. Have you an aquarium shop near you that sells marines? If so get a container full of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water. It will have nothing else in it other than water (No Nitrates, copper etc). You might need to buffer it depending on what sort of water these tadpoles like. (Tap water is normally really bad for anything aquatic.)

I suspect the real reason though, is you've called it Elon Musk, it's never going to grow into a mature adult until you re-name him ;)

I should have mentioned in the OP, I add a solution to the water to condition it. It came with the tadpole as well. I bought the whole kit from naturegifts.com

I’m surprised at all the replies here!

His back legs grew a little in the time I had him. Just checked the receipt, I got him in June. So not 6 months yet, about 4.5.

That could very well be the problem. Seems like the company is sending me another tadpole so I’ll have two of them soon:
What do you feed your tadpole, and what about after it becomes a frog? I might guess something like meal worms. I assume you’ll keep it in a terrarium, will it have a spa in it? :)

Tell me, did "Steve Jobs" arrive in your aquarium as a frog or a tadpole?

The tadpole eats algae pellets. After it becomes a leopard frog it will be eating meal worms and little crickets. And yes on the spa, only the best for Woz.

I asked, because in the dim, distant, recessed (suppressed?) misty memories of my late childhood/early adolescence - (none of this postal stuff) - there were tadpoles (acquired the old fashioned way) - some of whom produced rear limbs, others of which matured sufficiently to produce forelimbs - and yet others, yet, some of whom - to my amazement (one leapt into the sink in a mad bid for freedom), devoured each other in an uninhibited outbreak of cannibalism (I didn't think that siblings might do such things - one could argue that I was naive, but I think our biology studies were infected by a sort of mad optimism in those days) - I did attempt to rear tadpoles.

None survived to full adulthood, but - yes, it was most interesting to observe nonetheless.

Do you guys remember another thread about someone growing an exotic pet, I want to say it was praying mantises?

Please upload a picture of your terrarium when it’s convienent.

Check out the spine curvature here. I’ve been wondering if it’s normal and sent a photo to the company, and they said some curvature is normal. Curious to see how the new tadpole will compare

That is interesting. I noticed bulging eyes too..and it appeared motionless indicating lethargy. I’d drop some vitamin c into the water, stat. :)

I've decided to switch from conditioned LA tap water to spring water to see if it makes a difference. I'm also going to do a full water change twice a week instead of the recommended once a week. Maybe that will help.

I have the oddest feeling that while spring water might work, the arrival of spring itself may work even better.

Twice weekly water changes should handle nitrite and nitrate levels. I'd check out the required temp for morphing/development and install one good heater or two small good ones on opposite ends. I would stop using spring water or tap. Most pet stores sell quality RO water by the gallon. Use that. Check out your filtration mediums and see if there's any bad ecological growth (stinky slime). Tadpoles/frogs like most aquatic life are very fickle about their surroundings. Anything in excess can place stress on them.

If you're doing 30% water changes now, I'd opt for 2 15% water changes a week. Even if your water tests come out find, a low amount of good bacterial growth in the water, tank glass, substrate and filter mediums may also induce stress on aquatic life.

Good stuff from Zenithal on water quality. I'd just add a couple more things (but bear in mind my experience is just with common or garden British frogs and toads.) Tadpoles develop at different rates, and they change from vegetarians to meat eaters as they grow legs. (I remember feeding mine tiny bits of ham as they developed legs.) The ones with legs will eat the still vegetarian ones. When kept in groups they seem to develop faster. (If you end up with two - you might want to keep them together, that might push things along.) As mentioned previously if they're iodine deficient they can't develop but I think stress can play a role in kick starting the process. The Axolotl you see in pet shops is the 'tadpole' of a salamander and AFAIK can live permanently as a tadpole. I've never kept one but I understand to force them into metamorphosis you have to really environmentally stress them. (Keep reducing water levels etc). It might be worth googling axolotls?

Two excellent and informative posts.

Yes, I remember that unexpected cannibalism - which surprised me.
