Wait, who does not agree with me? People do not want the iPhone Touch to have GPS, better screen and take better pictures and video? Get real...and do not be a douche. :D
At some point, it is about the cost. The iPhone, which includes everything you seem to want, retails for $599.

I do not want a 16GB iPod touch with a better screen, a better camera, and GPS (which is usually worthless without data connection) if it's going to cost $499 (say, $100 cheaper that an iPhone because it doesn't have the phone chip in it). But wait, the iPhone's GPS is aGPS, which requires a phone chip in order to quickly get a GPS reading via triangulation from cell phone towers. So I guess it'd be the same unsubsidized $599 price as the iPhone?

There is no way to do it right.

Sure there is. It is called the iPhone. Who is complaining that the iPhone is not as thin as the iPod Touch? And who wants the iPhone to lose its GPS, better screen and cameras just so it can be thinner? The answer: nobody! Or almost nobody. Or not a reasonable person. Your argument does not make any sense.

Plus, why would you argue against a better product? If you do not want iPod Touch to be better, that is fine, but I want iPod Touch to be better, and I do not want Apple to treat people as if we are a bunch of morons.

Again, Apple said it is not about the price (read the review). It is about thinnest. So who wants the current iPhone to lose its GPS, better cameras and screen so that it can be thinner? Right, I am guessing nobody, which makes Apple excuse for a half-baked iPod Touch (again, Steve Jobs said it is the iPhone without the phone) silly and insulting to somebody who actually appreciates Apple's products and what they have done for the industry.

Sure there is. It is called the iPhone.

Then GO BUY ONE. Good lord, man. $599/$699 is what I've heard it costs without a contract.

An "n" of 1 is not data.

Reposted because it's really good and I don't just want to call you out for being the troll you are: Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

Oh for Christssake, go buy a friggin' iPhone then instead of whining that your sense of entitlement wasn't fulfilled. Apple, for better or worse, is in the business to make money, not to make you happy. So you *want* the Touch to have a better camera and GPS. Well, I *want* world peace. Am I going to get it?

If you think Apple's treating you like a moron, then don't buy the product! You sound like a schoolyard kid going "Wahhh! Apple won't give me what I *want*!"

Again, Apple said it is not about the price (read the review).
Meaning that Apple didn't "cut corners" and buy a cheaper camera for the touch (causing the disparity in pictures compared the iPhone) when a better, more expensive camera (that would fit the thin design) was available.

Again, would you pay $499 or $599 for a 16GB iPod touch that had all of the same features as the iPhone?

Feature parity = price parity.

So, the people on this board can only praise Apple and not express their opinions? By your line of reasoning, if you do not agree with my opinion about the iPod Touch, move on. Why are you expressing your disagreement with what I have to say?

P.S. You are not going to get world peace by being silent on the subject. So, if you want it, you need to speak up or do something about it.

See what happens when you pi** off the Apple Beez.

Yeah, funny how fanboyz seem to be so uncomfortable and, well, borderline scared of a dissenting opinion.

It is just my opinion, ladies, relax, nobody is going to take away your thin iPod Touches from you. Apple loves you. :D

yustas,

I get where you're coming from. Would I want an iPod touch with a better camera sensor and AF features? Sure, who wouldn't? Would I trade these features for a slightly thicker unit? Yes again. Would I want the iPod touch to have the nicer screen and GPS? Yep.

I'd love to have all of these features and would be willing to sacrifice on the thinness of the unit. But, I wouldn't want to have to pay more than the current $300 price (for the 32GB model).

This is where Apple's choices come into play. Obviously, they've done the market research and they feel that price and thinness wins out over better sensors/screen/GPS. So that's too bad for me (and you too).

Perhaps, I'll just take a look at it in person and see if all of the great new features (e.g. A4, Facetime, retina screen, gyros, vibration, etc) are worth the $300 price. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

NOTE - it does kinda suck that the camera sensor is so limited. If it had a decent 3.2 MP sensor, I could finally ditch the Sony digicam I use when I don't want to bring my dSLR. Oh well.

...maybe some people are dumb, just not who you think...

So, the review is in and basically iPod Touch kind of sucks...

...at being a camera and a GPS device, but it does everything else really damn well.

So you either buy it, or buy a cheap older model iPod and old digital camera, and make do with what you got while you wait for the next gen ipod when the camera is upgraded and/or GPS is added. Like me.

I was disappointed with the camera in the new iPods too, but even after waiting since last years iPods I got over it in like, 5 minutes (btw Steve, if you're reading... it sure would have been nice to have a decent camera on my hike yesterday...).

Why do people (like the OP) take Apple's design decisions so personally?

"Whaaa... Apple and/or Steve Jobs (because apparently he personally designs and hand builds all of it) didn't make (insert Apple product here) EXACTLY the way I wanted it! AND HE DID IT ON PURPOSE, TO CHEAT ME!!!"

Seriously, what is with that?

as much as i love apple products (itunes, macbook pro, ipod touch 2g) i have to agree with the o.p..they should have made the ipod touch 4g the same design as the iphone 4 but maybe a tiny bit slimmer and put a 5mp in the damn thing.

and to everyone whos saying the iphone 4 worth $700....stop ********ting yourselves, every phone raise the price so you can sign a contract with the company they're working with. NO PHONE is worth the real price EVER

for example this phone sells for $20 with contract, $229 without, now you believe this phone really worth $229?......

impact.jpg

be real people, the iphone 4 would probably would only cost $80-$100 more than the ipod touch 4 if it wasn't a phone/ with a phone company.. but even though i think apple could have done better with this ipod ill still be in line tomorrow morning to get my ipod 4 LMAO:p

Right, you are the one calling people names, but I am a troll because my opinion about the iPod Touch is apparently different from yours?

Sigh, here come the strawmen. No one cares if you disagree. You're just acting like a tard about it and crapping all over the board with your whining.

Let's review for a second the tone you adopted for this thread from the OP:

Does Apple Think People Are Dumb?

Sounds trollish.

So, the review is in and basically iPod Touch kind of sucks

Yes, that 9/10 = "kind of sucks". Definitely smells trolly.

Who the FRACK cares about how thin it is? We are talking about iPod Touch, not America's Next Top Model. Does Apple really think that people care more about thinnest than functionality?

Claiming to be apple's marketing department. Definitely looks trollish.

Finally it comes out, but it is half baked compared to the iPhone, and with rather inane excuses from Apple to boot, which is very disappointing.

half-baked? A fourth-generation, highly refined product? Really? Feels trollish.

Aside from those things, the new iPod Touch is not new at all, and pretty much as useful as the old one. Oh, I am sorry, it is thinner - wow - how could I forget about that? Is thinnest like a new feature of the OS or something?

Claiming there are no features worth anything other than the slimness. Demonstrably silly and untrue statement.

Wow, should we thank Apple now for not charging us a monthly fee to use an MP3 player? Please...

And here come the strawmen, a favorite of trolls.

Ad nauseum:

If it is not about the price, Apple essentially makes an argument that the new iPod Touch does not have the GPS, the same quality screen and cameras as the iPhone because thinnest is more important to the Apple's customers than GPS, better screen, pictures and video, which, as I already said, is insulting and unbelievable.

Plus, why would you argue against a better product? If you do not want iPod Touch to be better, that is fine, but I want iPod Touch to be better, and I do not want Apple to treat people as if we are a bunch of morons.

Perhaps you need a hug. :p :) (The best I can manage here)

I'm actually happy with the way the pictures look. I was expecting something horrendous, but it actually takes descent looking pictures!!!!

So your disagreements are fine, but not mine? Who the frack are you to decide who cares about what? And why do you call me a troll when you are clearly off topic and have contributed nothing to the topic of this thread other than trying to call me names for expressing my opinion about the iPod Touch?

The iPod Touch costs less than half as much as an iPhone. What do you expect?

Oh yeah, you probably are one of the countless who have no concept whatsoever of how much phone's really cost because you've never stopped to process the concept known as "subsidized pricing."

Again, you ascribe statements to me that I never said. Again, no one cares if you don't like the touch and they don't even care if you post to say that, but you repeatedly act like a belligerent little child when called out about how you have chosen to express it in a silly, childish manner. Go post this on a Zune forum or something, from what I can see, most of them are hard up for posts. You are just crapping on everyone's fun here.

The ubiquitous "free phone" has given rise to a sort of frame of mind that phone components are literally gratis, and actually don't cost anything to add to a device.

I remind the OP that he is buying an iPod, not a camera. If he wants a portable camera with good resolution, he can buy one. If he wants an iPod, he can buy one.

And should we dismiss that the older iPod shot at zero megapixels?

So still nothing about an actual topic of this thread?

I think OP has a point...

If apple kept the original thickness and squared it off, they probably could have fit the 3G camera in there. The iPhone is .37" thick and has the 5MP sensor and larger lens, so I could see a 3MP sensor and appropriate lens in a .32" device. Nobody complained about the old iPod touch being too thick... I have seen a number of people complain it is too thin. I actually felt the 1st gen was the best size, and that the curved back of the 2nd gen made it feel too thin. Squaring it off again would've brought it back to that ideal 1st gen size.

No one's asking for a digital SLR in their pocket, but having something with a decent resolution, and a better lens (at least w/ AF) would be nice.

Here's a shot I took w/ my iPhone 4 the other day

Click for full size

It's certainly nowhere near dSLR quality, but it takes decent enough pictures that I don't have to worry about regretting not having my p&s camera with me.

Wait, who does not agree with me? People do not want the iPhone Touch to have GPS, better screen and take better pictures and video? Get real...and do not be a douche. :D

I, for one, agree with YOU. Steve Jobs is anal about thinness. and the lack of buttons. and the lack of color in s/w (just look at itunes 10, as ONE example). he favors form (the form that HE holds dearest) over function, every time.

I'd MUCH rather have a thicker touch (it's easier for me to hold my Storm than it is to hold my 2G touch) if it meant having a state of the art camera (with bright LED flash), along with some other improvements mentioned by you. Less than a megapixel is unconscionable but the fanbois will line up to buy the darn thing. Me--I'm underwhelmed by the refresh. I actually think the Nano was the coolest new ipod, judged against it's own predecessor. oh, and it's about time Jobs ditched the pathetic buttonless Shuffle--I knew that was a clunker the day it was announced and expected Apple to ditch that form factor at some point. Apple isn't opposed to making mistakes--that's for sure.
