This is such an incredibly important issue - whether U.S. citizens have the right to privacy of devices they purchase and own. I hope Apple prevails. Its telling that its only Apple the govt is going after time after time....i.e. presumably the other guys have all sold their customers out (Google did not speak up after the White House FBI Encryption meeting last month which was a huge dissapointment...now its just down to Apple and the roll your own crowd).

Truly the real problem of the courts ruling in favor of the government is down the line (not right now), of not having the right to privacy for the citizenry is that at some point, someone in the government will be conniving enough (McCarthy, Hoover, Nixon, Trump?) to view themselves and their desires as king and abuse this power. The amount of information on our devices, the cloud etc. and the power for oppression of the citizenry it allows would make the East German Stasi blush.

Could you see Trump saying lets have Google list all the Muslims households in the U.S. who have ever done a search on Isis and publish the list (as President he could do that with the current FISA courts and FISA laws in place)?

Man, I feel, though perhaps erroneous, that of the FBI cannot get information by other means, that they are bad detectives. I also believe, perhaps also erroneously, that the FBI already has all the ability to crack any smartphone, and therefore already has all the information.

I'm a Trump supporter... but I respectfully disagree with him on this issue. Tim is 100% right, and even more right when he says the FBI/Government will "word this differently".

As far as I understand, both sides (FBI vs Apple) have valid reasons - there's no easy way out of this one, I think.

+1.... I agree. It's going to be interesting to see how this works out.

As much as I like most of what Trump says, I'm surprised that he'd be so quickly to damn free enterprise and lean on the side of government mandates on businesses. This issue is way deeper than just the surface issues.

Does anyone know if the FBI/government has explained in detail what they expect to find on the iphone? Are they in search of a mere motive or reason for the crime? Are they in search of some link back to a foreign organization? Do they believe there are plans for a future not-yet-committed crime on the iphone?

I don't know if the rest of the American public is as demanding as I am, but I need to see real tangible reasons for even asking for such an invasion. Because security is not a good reason.

He's not very bright.

His stance here is consistent with the lack of forethought in all of his policies and beliefs. The man is incapable of seeing beyond the instant-gratification his "solutions" offer, blinded to what the repercussions or affect on others would be past the immediate benefits for the first party involved.

What has he said that has any details in it? The man has no principles
