This is a first amendment issue: we are not talking about physical things here; we are talking about someones "ideas" and/or "thoughts" (notes/messages/etc) and their ability to transcribe them in such a way that others cannot read them. that's the heart of this. This is like banning the 21st century version of pig latin.

Encryption is simply software, software is simply ideas (similar to a book, or music recording) If I gave you some clear instructions you could manually encrypt, using a calculator, any note you wished to store. would THAT be illegal?

The government is essentially trying to ban certain Ideas (the knowledge of how to encrypt things) from being sold or used.

Why just go after the physical device manufacturers? they are simply selling a piece of hardware AND a piece of software, if we ban apple from selling encryption software; then someone else still could? I could buy software from a 3rd party to encrypt my sensitive data... would that be legal?

"Somebody the other day called me a common-sense conservative."

No, I don't think so. Making up quotes about himself is one of Trump's top 100 rhetorical tricks that thinking people see thru.

Ignorant people.

If due process of law is followed, and the owner is convicted of a crime (felony), the phone should be like a room/house which can be breached for the purposes of evidence or security ALONE.

Due process is the key word, and that is common sense.

I think you are missing the whole point here. One phone is NOT the issue here.

Secondly, it wants Apple to help implement a way to rapidly try different passcode combinations, to save tapping in each one manually.

Speaking of rooms on a house, how about if the government asks every home to install a separate door that they have the master key to operate? That way it is not too inconvenient in case you are suspected of wrongdoing? Sound OK with you?

Trump. #facepalm. We watch and laugh at America.

Only real hope America has is voting for Sanders.

We were laughing too at the beginning (at least half the country)....until it became clear that he was actually gathering steam and no matter what guttertrash flew out of his mouth it actually helped him. Now it's a scary and possible fact he could get the nomination. God I hope I'm wrong.

This is confusing. If he's really pro-American as he claims, wouldn't he be for privacy? I've been suspecting he's a fall guy for Hillary since I first heard he was running. I bet this fight is fixed.

Because you're wrong. America has a history of putting security before its citizens' rights.
Check what happened to japanese-americans during WW2.
Check what happened during McCarthyism.

Yet more proof Trump isn't a real conservative.

Helping the gov't break privacy protections? Mo' Big Gov't? Seems The Donald is on his way to becoming the next Mad King George.

More like America is embarrassed by him. I don't care what party I belong to, he brings down all americans because of how high he is polling.
You want to point me to one good candidate that has a shot at winning?

Currently, I rank them:
1. Donald Trump - I can't say what I really think of him on here, but he is still better than the other two, although not by much.
2. Bernie Sanders - Is a flat out communist (sorry, I can't even be nice and say he is a socialist anymore), something that people literally risked death and torture to get away from.
2. Hillary Clinton - Her policies would continue Obama's policies in trying to destroy America.
(Although, since she has commuted a felony by not turning over all of her emails from her own email server, I think she may prove to be ineligible.)

And to say that I think Donald Trump is a complete idiot is putting it very mildly, so I really don't think this is saying much about any of them.

But comments like what you see on here tends to prove just how dumb he can be, if you install a backdoor for the good guys, you install backdoor for the bad guys as well.

Maybe you don't want to be a Trump supporter, if he's elected all your freedoms go out the window
Same with Sanders or Clinton though, so who do we vote for?

The reality is we vote for Trump because all sides will hate him, which means Congress will block his every move and prevent any of these three from completely destroying our freedoms.

Bernie and Hillary are both likable enough that they would get some things through that would ultimately be terrible for this country and destroy it. Not saying they are super likable, just more so than Trump and in this case that is a very bad thing.

I can't believe anyone buys into that guy's philosophies.

But hey, there a recent and notable example of a guy in Germany several years ago that convinced a Nation to commit mass murder for the Nation's so-called "benefit", so the concept is not new.

I have my family's passports and resume ready and plane tickets on standby, just in case the US completely loses its mind this November. Wouldn't be the first time...

I think that Trump does not really understand the issue, as anyone at that age and/or not into technology. I went into European papers websites to read some comment sections; most people agree with Trump (to my surprise).
The reason? Most people believe that the FBI is simply asking Apple to "unlock" a specific phone through some backdoor that Apple has. Most people don't realize that what the FBI is asking will result in a long-term breach area of every iOS device, permanently.

Hi! Do you know the differences between communism and socialism? Just curious.

And we have looked back and said were wrong and we should never repeat these mistakes again.

The same applies here, we need to learn from our past mistakes and not do the same basic thing again.

The Republican Party platform claims it's always against Big Government overreach and against Big Government meddling into private sector!

Oh wait…. was Donald supposed to be a Republican? He says he is, a Republican, right?

yes, we will not do the same. You won't see camps full of Asians.
What we will see is something different, and this is the XXI century version of something that has always happened.

Apple should be criticized. American is a land of laws. A lawful order was given to Apple by a judge.

Apple (or anyone) in a democratic republic does not get to pick and choose what laws to follow.
It's their duty as US citizens to fight an order if it goes against our rights as Americans. If you believe that they should just lie down and take it, I hope that the US never becomes the US you want.

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.
Benjamin Franklin

"... God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty.... And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
--Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 (C.J. Boyd, Ed., 1950)
