HOLY CRAP. Starting to feel like there was a whole world of great laptops my eyes were closed to until this keynote. Really wanna try this thing in store. That thing looks like it was ripped out of my dreams

I have been eying these razer blades for awhile... The closest thing as possible to the MacBook in my opinion but with all the specs Apple seems resistant to include in the MacBook. The only issue I have with them is the battery life while using the GPU.... (not that great) and of course the higher price for a windows laptop.

I'm shocked too.

The problem is the alternative: windows

I'm just going to stick to my current mbp and see how this develops.

I'm usually a huge apple fanboy but this is really stupid.

Original Retina Mac prices came down by $200+ in a year. Next year I think we'll see some price adjustments.

Changing $1400 for 2TB of SSD is really pushing it.

Windows is atrocious and I only use it for gaming, but the fact does remain that Macs are overpriced ... and they are now even more overpriced than before. You can't argue price-to-spec ratio in regards to Macs and PCs. Anyone that does is delusional. The only thing that Apple consistently takes a fatty dump on the competition is the SSDs. The new Pros have a bandwidth of 3+ GB/sec, which is insane.

All that means is that they use some form of the Samsung 960 pro nvme m.2 ssds. Nothing stops someone from buying one and sticking it in a windows laptop. I'm using a 950 pro in my alienware 13 r2

There's no mobile Nvidia chips this time around, they just lower clock speeds and such. That 1060 is basically a desktop gtx 980.

I share a lot of the thinking with the posts in this thread after this summer/fall.
Unfortunately. I have things in the planning and was waiting for a logical refresh, and instead I get stubbed.
My wait gets rewarded with 'wth?'
My savings get rewarded with 'got another 500?'
etc.

I can't justify moving to Windows though.. sorry.

So I really do not know what to do. I think I will just stick to what I have, until it breaks. And let the future decide.

Mah, I haven't feel this negative on this forum in a while. The thing is, if I didn't require some pro hardware/software combos I would be fine with last years model under refurbished and just buy something new in three years.

But money really doesn't come easy, and that compromise is still nearly 2500 bucks..

I'm aware of this. Was just pointing out that this is the one area where Apple doesn't skimp is the SSD.

Always admired apple products and have had a couple of MBP's, Ipads and Iphones...the newer products started having hardware issues and I got burned by Apple, plus they have priced me out of there eco system.I plan on going a more conventional route in the future, 4k touch screen laptop etc, best of luck in the future with there products, will enjoy looking but from a distance :)

This is so unnecessarily fanboyish it's almost like you HAVE to be saying this on a joking tone. Something tells me you're not though. And you're exactly what apple counts on when they do something anti consumer. "They'll just take it and somehow...work for us as like free advertising or something "

If you don't understand humour is, can't really help you. Anyway, the point of my post is that Apple offers you top-notch cutting edge tech here which obviously gonna cost money. Other companies (thats why I refered to MS, which has announced their new hardware two days before) actually ask more money for inferior hardware.

Not a single word of this is true.

People have pointed out the opposite, that you can purchase better hardware from other companies for much less than apple. Put down that Apple Kool Aid, sell those stocks, and realize that what you're saying is absolutely wrong.

Windows user chiming in. I didn't even know anything good existed outside the Samsung and Dell XPS lineup either. The XPS laptops are very, very reliable. I'm not sure about the Razer. Samsung is quite good too. I've had mine for a couple of years and there's never been an issue. It also doesn't explode, so that alone should pique your interest.

Buy a refurbished 6,1 Pro?

Like what? Razer blade? 3 hours battery, really? Dell XPS 15? That is certainly a decent "budget" version of the MBP, but the specs are significantly worse. Then there is the new MB Surfacebook, which starts at $2400 or so for a 256GB model. Sorry, I just don't see your point.

UK customers aside I can't understand people being that shocked with the price. Configure the old retina MacBook Pro and you're about 200 less. I think that's worth the updated intell chip and touch bar. I hoped they would give us a better deal but I was prepared for what we got.

The xps isn't a budget version of the MacBook Pro.

It allows for user upgradable ram/ssd, and runs Linux without issue right out of the box. Windows 10 is very different and much better than it use to be.

Hell, I think the xps 13 is better than the prior 13" pro.

Without user-upgradable RAM and storage and an expectation to get at least 3 years out of a laptop - some of us need to go towards the higher tiers when VMs, dev environments, serious photo/video or CAD work gets done vs e.g. writing papers and browsing, email etc.

I'm not (yet) done w/Macs, as I also have a fairly $ software investment there, but I'll likely be buying a mid-2014 or 2015 maxed model instead until Apple has something compelling to offer again.

I've got an early 2011, 2.3 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro that I've added an SSD to and 8GB ram. I'm looking to do the same, scouring the refurb list as I trust it more than craigslist (known some people who have gotten burned on there with laptops).

Firstly, I love the new design, touch bar, the additional colour option and the updates made to this years MBP, it truly looks an amazing machine.

But.....

Im really disappointed in the dramatic price increase, after saving the £2000 based on last years prices of the "top-base-model" 15" MBP only to find that the new 2016 15" "top-base-model" is now priced at £2700 I really don't know what to do....

Sure I could pay the £2000 down and finance the remaining £700 but I don't really want to enter a finance agreement just to get a new laptop....

The decision made even harder now that my 2006 17" MBP has finally died and I need a replacement asap.... :( :( :(

Really usnsure what to do now

I'm with the OP. Been a Mac user - Mac evangelist! - 30 years. I was sort-of happy with the realisation that their desktops are overpriced paperweights, thinking that even if I built my own custom PC, I'd still be happily in the ecosystem with my MBP, because Apple make the best laptops.

After yesterday, I've now concluded that when my MPB dies, I'll be looking for a Windows machine. And I'm probably on my last iPhone too (6, although I may upgrade to a 6S when my contract is up next year), thanks to the lack of a headphone jack in the 7.

Wait until you see what you can do with a custom-built desktop PC... but yeah, those Razer laptops look, quite frankly, amazing. How the hell did they fit a GTX1060 with 6GB RAM into that??

Totally with you on this OP. Yesterday it became clear that to me Cook doesn't have the slightest interest in what the older core audience wants.
He and Ive are now out to exclusively cater to the Facetubers and Fredericco Viticcis of this world who view the physical keyboard as a burden and would like to see it replaced by a touchscreen, because that's what they grew up with.

I thought that the 27th would be the day where Apple redeems itself but no, it's the day that all my hope died. The Mac mini will probably get axed, a Mac Pro with PCIe is extremely unlikely to happen. It's been a nice 16 years, time to move on.

Let me quote Tim Cook from Nov 2015:

Tim Cook said:
“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?”, asks Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, who has just flown into Britain for the launch of the iPad Pro.

The fact is that 13" Dell XPS with inferior specs is $200 less. Is a wide color screen, much faster storage, faster GPU and CPU etc. worth $200? I'd say yes.

If we look at the 15" model, yes, the price is a bit on the high end. My last MBP was 2700 swiss franks. The new one is 2900. That includes a rebate we get. Yes, the price has increased. Is that additional price of 200 franks worth it to me for a laptop which is lighter, more ergonomic and vastly superior in its technical characteristics? You bet it.

P.S. Which competition? Who ships a wide gamut screen on a laptop right now? Who even ships a Polaris-equipped laptop? We don't know the exact specs yet, but at any rate, its gaming laptop level performance. In terms of GPU (what people are complaining about), this is the most significant update the MBP has received EVER. I wouldn't be surprised if the 15" MBP is going to be the fastest sub 2.2kg laptop on the market - in all parameters.

Most of the people complaining are talking about the 15".

Very few laptops ship with Polaris because the NVidia 10 series easily beats the AMD chips in both performance and power usage. Almost every windows laptop that is going with a dGPU is going with a NVidia 1050(soon) or 1060 GPU.

The Razer blade released months ago is 1.9 kg and beats the 15" MBP in performance as it has a 1060 inside. It is also smaller than the MBP. Oh and it starts at $1799.

Also it is the most significant update to the MBP because it has been 527 days since the last freaking update.

The dell precision 5000 (workstation version of the XPS line) has mobile Xeon processors (i.e. likely faster than the upgraded proc). And they are the same size as the new MBP and weigh less. Aaaand they are cheaper...

So no, the MBP is not the fastest sub 2.2kg laptop on the market nor is it priced anwhere near competitively.

I've got a mid 2007 MacBook White. Before the announcement yesterday, I had hight expectations about a new MacBook Air - and they're a gone. This is ridiculous, I'm waiting so long and no update at all? If the current MacBook 12 got cheaper (MacBook Air prices), I would buy it.

The MacBook Air is 598 days old! What is going on Apple? Maybe I'm migrating to a Windows Laptop or a cheap Chromebook machine.

This.

Have fun with Winblows. Windows 10, like all other versions before it, absolutely sucks. And yes I've used it extensively. If you don't find the Apple tax worth paying, that's cool bruh, but don't act like the difference ends with the hardware spec list. Software counts too, and in this case more than swamps the price difference for the hardware.

This makes no sense, given all other versions have varied so greatly . Windows xp and 7 were just as bad as vista and windows 8?? Do tell ?

if you go into something with your mind made up...it's not really unbiased opinion is it.

I like the MacBook pros....I was actually sold, until they showed the price....for a first time I don't see the value , especially as I would have to deal with that silly function bar gimmick and the deal breaker...the keyboard . If it's anything like my 12" MacBook, no way could I accept that as my daily driver. Slyle over useability

MacBook Air was never meant to be the bargain model. What happened to the air is it got replaced by the rMB and the newest MacBook Pro without the touch bar.

But it's not, the previous top end version was not $4k plus .

With the iPhone we got 256 for what was the old price of 128Gb. Do max for max comparison , big jump ....

It's almost as if Apple know that they've taken so long to significantly update the MBP that they know there's a captive market out there desperate to upgrade and have priced it accordingly?
