Washed-out overall quality of screen, desaturated dull colors,.

Believe it or not, the color gamuts measured in the older iPhone 3 screen and the new iPhone 4 screen are about the same, both are pretty poor but on a small screen, the colors look more accentuated so that's why people don't notice it as much. Also while the the iPhone 4 is brighter, the iPhone 3 is still has probably the 2nd brightest LCD around and the difference isn't that large. Where the IPS screen really does well is the black level and the viewing angle, but in a regular lighting environment I doubt they'll matter that much. For watching movies in a darker environment the IPS screen definitely is much better, but the AMOLED is much more so.

I don't have an iPhone 4 to compare with right now, but in indoor office lighting, my new iPod Touch Retina display looks washed out/noticeably less crisp than the AMOLED display on my HTC Incredible.

When I previously compared the Incredible to the iPhone 4 display, I was impressed with the iPhone 4 display's crispness, so I am a bit disappointed with the iPod Touch display.

No big deal though, it's still a very nice device and complements my Android phone well. I always liked running two OSs: Windows and Mac at home, and now Android and iOS on the go.

Glad to see someone else rocking an iPod touch and an Android smartphone. reason I say this was I debated with myself for a bit asking myself why not upgrade my Droid Eris to a Droid X with the money I'm paying for a Touch and just go all-in-one. I decided a phone mp3 never would work for me, I wanted a dedicated MP3 player as well as use it for other tasks to save my phone the battery life =)

I meant that the FaceTime camera in the Middle looks kinda odd, It's also very large compared to the iPhone 4 one

And the general look of the iPod Touch is kinda annoying with that chrome backplate, they basically scratch the day after you buy it (not that the iPhone 4 Glass back doesn't) but still i think that the edges of the iPhone 4 are really nice

The rounding of the Touch back makes it feel even thinner than it is. It's remarkable how thin this thing feels.

I went back to the Apple Store and looked again. I think my first impressions of the iPhone were skewed by the fact that they keep the brightness very high on the display units in there. The HTC Incredible display doesn't get nearly as bright as the iPhone/iPod Touch max brightness, so in a bright store with all displays cranked up, the iPhone and Touch look similar and much nicer than the Incredible. In lower light, it's a different story with the AMOLED screen looking more crisp/contrasty.

So... I take it back. The iPod Touch display compares pretty well to the iPhone display. If there are differences, I didn't find them very noticeable.

Looks like everyone needs to wait until iPod Touch 5. But there might still be some problems then, so let's all just hold off until iPod Touch 7. But who knows how incredibly inferior that will be to its corresponding generation of iPhones. Maybe we should be safe and wait until the 10th generation.

To me, the display on iPod Touch 4 is actually seeming at least as good as a retina! At first, I was a bit underwhelmed, but then I realized that the default brightness was very low. I turned it up, and it now looks incredible!

Other than viewing angles and perhaps a very slight contrast difference, the iPod touch 4's screen is almost unrecognizable from the iPhone 4's. You guys make this out to be an enormous problem when it simply isn't.

Washed-out overall quality of screen, desaturated dull colors, non-existing blacks. Bumped-up screen resolution - that's about one and only improvement over the previous iPod's screen.

We're not feeling sorry for you for suckering yourself into AT&T's trash network/service

Black levels on the new iPod touch are horrible. Only apple fanboys like joe1946 believe the screen being used on the iPhone 4 is same one being used on the new iPod touch.

I'm baffled

I had a 1st gen iPod Touch, and an iPhone 3G. Now have an iPod Touch 4G. Compared to both of those the new iPod Touch's display is gorgeous! You guys are complaining about that??? *shaking head sadly*

To each his own, I guess. I'm very happy with my new 'Pod!

Some people just can't don't want to be happy, I guess.

Instead of enjoying the nice additions to the previous models, they decide to complain because it's not like they dreamt it would be.

I love the new retina display, it looks beautiful and I can actually read websites without having to zoom in, this is just 'comfortable" compared to the older iPods. Seriously, ignore all those idiots who haven't actually tested the display, it's awesome. I don't really care for the viewing angle, it's not like anyone is gonna look at it at an 150° angle anyways.

LOL

You're comparing a picture where the iPhone screen is underexposed and the iPod is overexposed (brightness is higher)...

He is also comparing one with a black background to a grey background. The grey background is going to make it look washed out compared to a black screen. Get the same background and then look at it.

+1 I looked at both the iphone and touch at the apple store a couple days ago and other than off-axis viewing showing a color shift, the screens are quite similar looking.

Agreed - I looked at both the touch 4 and Iphone 4 at the apple store today and if you are looking from the angle you are using 99.5% of the time, I wouldn't be able to tell which is which. Head on, I didn't notice any difference in the colors side by side (when the brightness was at the same level on both).

I am blown away by the quality of the retina display on the iPod 4.

Yeah, keep pretending the viewing angles are the only difference between TN & IPS panels... You really need to learn more about LCD technology.

I've had the iPod touch 4th gen since Wednesday and went through some side-by-side comparisons with the iPod touch 2nd gen I've had for two years. The screen is vastly superior. The biggest difference is that the text is extremely crisp. This is extremely useful since it allows you to zoom out and still be able to read things. Particularly when browsing in Safari, with the old touch, I would constantly be scrolling around, zooming in, zooming out. Really a pain. With the new touch I could just zoom out to fit more of the web page and just read the small text. The only scrolling is up and down.

As far as viewing photos, it is really night and day. I transferred over a 4 MB high resolution family photo. It looks much, much clearer on the new touch.

I don't own an iPhone 4, so I can't make any comparison to the IPS Retina display, but the iPod touch Retina is very, very nice upgrade to the old screen.

One thing I notice is that images on webpages in Safari seem to look the same, as if Safari does not make use of the higher resolution screen.
