iPod touch Don't expect to be blown away by the quality of the retina display on the iPod 4.

... How much RAM does the ipad have?

256MB. While it's true that the iPhone probably needs more RAM for the phone module residing in the memory all the time, it's still disappointing that the iPod Touch only got half the memory. I don't see it being much of a problem right here, but I suspect that as Apple adds more stuff into the iOS, it'll prove to be troublesome down the road.

It's not surprising that the touch would get the same amount of memory as the ipad has.

I'm more worried about 256 RAM compared to Iphone. In my case, I don't care about the camera, but I would like a wifi surfing experience and multi-task equal to the Iphone 4. Otherwise, I guess my decision to get the Ipod Touch is now back in limbo.

That and the lack of GPS keeps me at bay for now. I thought I was totally sold, but hearing this about the screen makes me a little more wary...

I don't care that it's better than the last gen already because I didn't think the last gen was good enough to consider even.

The iPad has 256mb and the new G4 touch has 512mb.

No, the new iPod touch has 256mb of RAM also.

Confirmed over on iPod touch Fans forums by numerous members from both the UK and US who have the device and have ran various system diagnostic apps on their device.

Unless you're going to buy a large, offline map application for $$, a GPS module doesn't really do much for you, because when you'd need the GPS's assistance, you're almost certainly going to be out of range of any wifi, so you can't load anything not on the device.

How much you want to bet when I go to the Apple Store in the morning and look at the two 3.5" Retina displays it will be hard to see any difference. This is like the pixel peepers on DPreview.:D

If you can't that's good, you don't have to worry about better quality screens because you don't see the difference.. I notice, and I wish I didn't.

My youtube videos look exactly the same on both Retina displays.
LOL,
and how about the quality of blacks? :) If the new touch's display is so perfect to you, please explain to us the level of black you see on it. Now, do you see the crappiness of TN panel or is it still so perfect for you? ;)

Omg, my $300 device isn't as good as the $700 version of it! Hawly ****!!!! Seriously, all you whiners need to get a ***** clue. If the "LEVL UF BLAKNUS" on the ipod touch isn't good enough for you, spend the extra $400 and get yourself an iphone! If you can live without the super "LEVL UF BLAKNUS" then get an iPod touch for $400 less :)

Or more accurately, he and the OP are trolling on a false premise: anything with a black level and viewing angle that aren't as good as the IPS screen isn't "good," which is not true. I've seen such attack from AMOLED fan boys but didn't expect such attack here.

i can't compare it to an iphone but from what i have seen so far you will be very happy with the surfing experience

They are dirty and hairy, and you should never trust a single thing they say.

On that note, ifixit confirmed that the ipod touch 4 does indeed have 256MB of RAM like the iPad.

You're accepting the same s*t LCD for 3 years in the row? You're so wrong and so undemanding and easy customer. It's right about time for touch to have a better screen. Guess we have to wait for the next year...

Some people here are acting like the screen is trash, that's not true at all, I have an iPhone 4 and out of curiosity I went to check out the screen in the Apple store today, yes the black levels are inferior but it's still a huge jump over the old screen, to the average eye the screens don't look that different. Remember the i4 costs 400$ more in reality so the touch is still a great value for what it is.

And we absolutely did get a much better screen with approx. 4 times the resolution. How is that not a better screen? Also even the new IPS of the iPhone 4 hasn't really improved much in the gamut range and has pretty much the same tone curve as the older screens so other than the terrible black level it's not like there was much wrong with the older screen.

I understand your point about demanding more as a customer, but it's pretty easy to see why: the iPod Touch currently has no direct competitor at all.

Again, you and your OP might have a good intention of wanting more from Apple, but the premise shown on the thread title is just wrong. It can be the same screen as the old one with more pixels and can still be mind blowing. How hard is that to accept?

It is not the same. It is better
