Look at the dock, the iPod's is brighter than the iPhone one. Plus there's glare on the iPhone screen, which the camera is obviously compensating for. Weather icon - the temperature is washed out on the iPod, because the icon is too bright. Do I need to go on?

Nobody is saying TN = IPS; I use both kinds of LCDs daily so I know the differences. The debate here is whether iPod = TN or iPod = IPS, and no conclusive evidence has been presented that the new iPod has a TN panel. Besides, even Apple says the iPod screen does 24-bit color, which means 8 bits of red, green, and blue, which is NOT TN because TN is 6 bits per component color (18 bit screens)..

PLUS! (I know most of you will don't trust Apple Experts, but...) I have spoken to 8 DIFFERENT Apple EXPERTS (yes 8!), and they ALL admit of the new iPod Touch 4G having an IPS Panel...

Again, they may be lying but, i've noticed that they do take at least 15mins to reply when i ask the question, and their reason for taking so long is because they need to contact the System Engineers.

IF you go to Apple's web page, for the iPod Touch there is no mention for the IPS display, while on the iPhone 4 there is.

On the iPhone 4 page: Brilliant, no matter how you look at it.

The iPhone 4 Retina display uses technology called IPS (in-plane switching) — the same technology used in the Apple LED Cinema Display and iPad — to achieve a wider viewing angle than on typical LCDs. Which means you can hold iPhone 4 almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture. That’s perfect when you’re sharing photos with a friend or moving your iPhone around while playing a driving or flying game. In addition, the Retina display offers four times the contrast ratio of previous models, so whites are brighter, blacks are darker, and everything is more beautiful.

*There is also no mention of a higher contrast on the iPod Touch page*

In other threads several "Apple Experts" have stated that the iPod Touch "has no RAM".

lol. totally. this one fact sort of discredits anything else they have ever said, are saying, or will say in the future.

Yea. That's also why whenever I call Apple Care I ask to talk to an Engineer or Product Specialist. I need someone who's on my level, not someone with a BA in Art who has the same website I have pulled up reading it to me like I'm a 3 year-old.

Exclamation Don't expect to be blown away by the quality of the retina display on t

The iPod touch LCD doesnt use the IPS technology the iPhone 4 has...

I [and almost everyone else] would be blown away if the screen is significantly better than the one on the 3rd gen ipod touch.

Are you saying it is not significantly better?

Proof? I see similar if not the same brightness level on both devices. iPhone is just having different and dark wallpaper, but the visibility of icons are identical to me. I really don't get your point, you're trying to prove TN is same quality as IPS like joey1946? :D

Just for fun, I compared what should be identical colors in the two devices of the photo you keep pointing to: the middle blue on the weather icon, the gray area in the lower right of the maps icon, and the whitest part of the envelope on the mail icon. Every one of the three had 20% higher CMYK values (i.e., it's darker) on the iPhone shown. In other words, as anyone with eyes can see, the brightness has been set higher on the Touch. Yeesh.

The Retina display includes LED backlighting and an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen for the best viewing and battery life possible.

I haven't read the thread, but I agree that IPS is superior to TN. Honestly, though, I don't really care. It'll still be a vast improvement over what I have now. So I'm happy, and I don't see the need to argue about anything. :)

Nobody have 100% proof for now, but some engadget pictures shot at extreme viewing angles suggest it's TN panel in the new touch. IPS screen wouldn't have so much shifted colors off-axis.

Eh quick snaps with the brightness up too high. This is all speculation - in the absence of conclusive data, I'm just hoping for the best :p

We will find out within a day or 2 when people start receiving their Touches. Like I said before, as long as there are no inverted blacks and no yellowing, the screens should be quite fine :)

Wow guys.. Fanboyism much

I thought it was common knowledge that the screen specs were different, same as the back camera's are different.

IPS out specs TN.. I've become used to people around me knowing this, as I work at 6th Avenue Electronics, I forget most people think a screen is a screen, LEDs are the best thing ever (lol), and 1080p is 1080p no matter what screen it's on.. *sigh*

Btw, for moving images Plasma always wins.. ALWAYS Frame Rate, Contrast, Colors, Plasma wins.

Anyway..

iPhone 4 has a better display, period. Please for the love of not being uninformed fanboys go research the different kind of LCD tech, please..

You're still reading.. GO! READ! LEARN!

EDIT: This isn't to say the iPod screen sucks, hell it's great for the price, just not as good as the iPhone. That is all..

Still, go learn yourself some stuff!

What the hell are you lot arguing for? I don't understand :S Some are like "it's not the same retina display as iPhone4" and the others are "you shouldn't hold it like a muppet from the side"....what the hell? Your agreeing with each other and disagreeing about the same thing. It's a different screen, the end

How much you want to bet when I go to the Apple Store in the morning and look at the two 3.5" Retina displays it will be hard to see any difference. This is like the pixel peepers on DPreview.:D

It's a different screen, the end

That isn't even confirmed. But I do agree with you, we can't just sit here and bicker at each other without any real evidence on either side. Let's wait another day until people actually have the chance to see the thing before yelling "APPLE SUX OMG" or similar :p

Well, looking at my 2G 8gig...

Yep, I'm just sitting here looking at my humble little 8 gig iPT... playing a little Ray Lynch there off the tinny little speaker (but, not bad for a quiet moment at my desk...) Anyway, so I'm looking at that 480 x 320 screen shot of the cover art. And... it's still beautiful. Watched "Shudder Island" and then "2012" on a return flight to Japan (so, like, 12 hours watching movies, little music) and I marveled at the quality of the images, of the movie and the detail. I don't know, it just seems like double the pixel density on the same screen technology just has to be... well, at least twice the quality and beauty... I guess I'm not comparing to iPhone, but to my current iPod Touch.

From Engadget's just posted review:

"The 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen is called a Retina Display, which means it had equal resolution (960 x 640) and pixel density (326 ppi) as the iPhone 4, but it's not the same IPS panel that you're used to on the touch's big brother. What does that mean in real world terms? Well in our testing we could see noticeable difference in viewing angles, but only at pretty extreme positions. We also felt like the touch's display was slightly darker than the iPhone 4 screen. In general, we don't see this as a major detractor for the device, but there's no question that the iPhone 4 is sporting a qualitatively better display. It may be an "iPhone with no contract" in many regards, but not when it comes to the screen."

Anyone else notice the OP asked if vibration was enabled for "massage" apps, and not "message" apps?

Just saying.

Also, it's the same display except you can't see the screen on its side. OH NO!

WOW! This thread served NO purpose.

It didn't. A good TN panel with such high resolution can still blow away people with its excellent quality yet the OP of this thread wrongly assumed a TN panel means automatically an unimpressive screen, which isn't true at that size.
