I been away from my computer for the last 6 hours and have found no message nor a change in my order status.

still waiting... but $50 back in my pocket...

I called Apple yesterday to ask them about my order, whether it might ship by 8/20, etc...

As usual, I was told "sure, we haven't heard anything that would lead us to believe otherwise"...

Then I asked her to throw me a bone, some little trinket to let me know that they give a crap about my business, like a $25 iTunes gift certificate. She sent me to her supervisor, who, when asked for the same concession, promptly offered me a $50 discount on my DP G5. I snapped that up immediately, thinking that I has won. I then asked her about my computer and its status, and she told me that it looked like it was in the process of being built.

That left me with 2 questions:
1. Was she blowing smoke, or could she see that MY G5 was being built?
2. Should the ease of getting her to credit me that small bit of cash worry me that she was trying to soften the blow of the dreaded e-mail that might be coming my way???

We shall see...

For those waiting on the 6800, i feel bad that they cannot meet the 8/20 date. But we have thought all along that that date was probably going to slip. Its nice to see that apple is at least trying to make some attempt at providing you with a machine as soon as possible. (although these last minute emails have got to stop!)

For those that can wait the extra few weeks, getting a free 9600xt card is not a bad deal at all. That sould fetch at least $150 from some G5 owner with a 5200 card still in their machine. At least it will get you your G5 sooner. September is only a few more weeks away. I know how hard it is to wait, but if you can, take advantage of that awesome deal. If they push your date back again, however, then you give em hell!

Yeee haw!!

Got my tracking number. It's coming from Fullerton, CA priority overnight
and estimated delivery by noon.
I ordered on 6/9 as soon as I heard they could be ordered--about 6:30 AM, Alaska Daylight Time.
The only extras are the wireless keyboard and mouse. I've had my extra RAM from Other World Computing for a couple of months.
The computer is being sent priority overnight. I didn't pay extra for this.

those revving problems didn't do much good to my eager waiting, hopefully my machine turns out ok..is there anybody with a 9600xt that doesn't experience this??

oh well, time to go to bed, big shipping day tomorrow, at least for you guys :)

good luck!

Yeah, my 9600's as good as gold with my 22" cinema display. No scrolling issues and Quake 3 maxed out (an old test but it's silky!). I'm folding 24/7 and the fans kick in gently now and again but all seems fine.

Congrats!

It seems like there have been a bunch of people today. That is GREAT! I know you are excited. If I were you, I would not be able to sleep tonight.

Still no word here. I keep hoping. I only have the 9600 board since I didn't want to wait for the 6800 initially. So far it seems the only people to get the DREADED e-mails have been the people who order the 6800. Let's hope Apple can pull this off and get everything shipped by 11:59pm tomorrow. No activity on my charge card. And that scares me.

Great news too about the overnight shipping! I wasn't in a rush back in June...but here it is the middle to end of August and I am anxious.

Hope I can post an e-mail soon with my shipping announcment. Good luck guys! :p

For what it is worth

I spoke with a Apple rep about an hour ago. I asked if there would be anotherr push back of the ship date? He said that it looks good that there will be a big shippment go out tomorrow (8/20). Also said that he would have heard something if they were going to push it back again.

So, we shall see!

By the way does anyone know what method of shipping is "Best Way Possible"? That is what it shows now for my order.

Wow, I'm glad you heard that, too. When I called and asked if mine would be shipping tomorrow he said that they were going to catch up with their backorders tomorrow and that I am looking good for mine to ship.

Oh, and "Bestway" means 2-3 day shipping.

22" cinema display? Gosh, I think Apple has done it this time. First they manufacture 23" Cinema displays with pink hues, now they send over a 22". Okay, okay. Just kidding. I'm glad the shipping wave has finally started. Congratulations to everyone finally receiving the units.

I do have a legitimate question: who manufactures the aluminum displays?

Post number 4000! Oh sheesh...I think I hit "submit" too early.

Hey LeonPro,

Do you find yourself having any of these scroll/rippling fan reving problems with your 2.5/9600xt?

Just curious if this is an across the board problem or just with certain units.

Thanks!

little by little

My CDW rep says:
"just checked status - you are 18 on the list and we are starting to ship little by little - will keep you posted"

Little by little? How long does it take to ship 18 macs? How could apple possibly have sent a company the size of CDW less than 18 macs???

Alright, I'm holding on... but I'm losing my grip.

Hard drive brand in your G5

QUESTION: what brand hard drives are shipping in these G5's (160 GB models). I want to pick up another one before my G5 gets here so that I can RAID them. I want them to be the same brand... anybody willing to take a peak for me?

Anyone have any thoughts on RAIDing the drives for video editing? Cautions, tips, recomendations welcome.

Someone may have posted the answer already, but searching for "Harddrive" was a bit futile at 3000+ posts. :p

I received the 6800 delay mail as well. In my mind, this is one of the no-brainerest of no-brainer decisions ever. I don't really need the 6800 now, so I wind up getting a perfectly good free 9600 that I will plop into the dual 1 gig G4 that my wife is inheriting. Hopefully the machine won't linger until 9/3 to ship. I don't know why anyone would not choose this option.

I don't blame Apple for this one. If they don't have the 6800s, they don't have them. I knew from the getgo that that card was still in the pipeline when I ordered it. I think this is a great move by Apple to make things right.

2 weeks with the G5

First off, I'm glad to see that more and more of these units are now shipping to the patiently waiting masses that orderd them. Hopefully tomorrow will be a big day for even more people.

I have to say, it's worth the wait. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would have waited for a computer but I'm glad I did. I do feel bad for those that the untimeliness caused a real headache for such as those that rely on it for business or educational purposes. That definitely sux big time and Apple is going to have to do something in the future to refine a process that just doesn't seem to work real well when under the pressure of demand.

Anyway, after 2 weeks I haven't experienced any problems. The machine runs smooth and silent and I decided to take the advice about running the Hardware test and everything came out fine. I do have one thing to ask of LeonPro....did you get the Applecare plan to register yet. I know you had posted something about them working on it since the 12th but we're almost to the end of this week and I still can't register it. Maybe more of these systems have to go out before they start playing catch up with the serial numbers.

Well, have fun tracking those shipments everyone and enjoy.

Later.

Hi, DWKlink. I have no rippling problems when scrolling with my 9600XT card. At least I don't see anything unusual with my monitor that changed since I used it with a PC last year.

As for the fan reving, I hear it once in a while for around 5 seconds max and then it goes back to its quiet self. I personally don't think this is a problem. I think it's just trying to keep up with the demand especially since the 9600XT doesn't have a built-in fan. I think it's a requirement by the card to tell the logic board to give it more air because it's being taxed. Unlike a "normal" video card that has its fan spinning on power up. Of course this fanless design may have its fault as the constant power on and off of the fans could affect the power flow in the logic board and carry over to the monitor.

I see from other comments that they find the G5 fans very noisy when it spins up for a few seconds. I personally am not annoyed by it and find it very quiet. My friend came over today and was even surprised how quiet it was and didn't find anything wrong with the spinning fan when we were doing FCP work. He even commented that my PBG4 was more noisy and annoying as the spinnig fan of the laptop was hard at work Folding@home 24/7.

9800 pro - will it work in G5 until 6800 arrives?

I have a G5 2.0 dual withATI 9800 pro card which was going to be replaced by the G5 2.5 dual with 6800 when it arrived. I got the same email as ?everyone else with a G5/6800 on order and chose the option to get it with the 9600XT by Sept 3 with the 6800 arriving on/before Sept 17. Any reason I can't move the 9800pro card from my G5 2.0 dual into my 2.5, sell the G5 2.0 dual with the 9600 XT card in it from the 2.5 and then sell the 9800 pro when the 6800 comes? I am using a single new 23 inch ACD with DVI connection

Will the 9800 pro make a perceptible difference compared to the 9600XT in the G2.5 using Photoshop with 4 Gb RAM? I am not a gamer and don't yet have Motion. That's all that really matters at this point, after a three month wait.

Or should I just sell the G5 2.0 dual with the 9800 pro in it and ebay the 9600 XT card when the 6800 arrives?

It's late...I hope the above makes sense.

9600 rippling

I to am having a rippling effect periodically. It only seems to happen when I am scrolling a site and when playing video. Also the fan is noisy, but only last for about 5 seconds.

Watching the water make little bubbles!

Okay. I have been a freak all day.

Checking my credit card.
Checking my Apple Order Status.
Getting jettery everytime I hear a new e-mail arrive.

But then a little while ago, my order status changed. No other info was posted, but on the top, the order says:

Order Status as of 09:10 PM PDT, 08/19/2004 Shipped

That's all. Sure, I have been watching the water waiting for the pot to boil all day, and this is the first sign of tiny bubbles. Should I get excited? Ugh! I most probably won't be able to sleep. "with dreams of G5s dancing in my head."

More to follow...

What exactly is the "rippling effect"? I am not sure I understand.

I think it's hard to determine the brand of hard drive Apple uses these days for both 160GB and 250GB. They used to use IBM-Hitachi, but I've seen the rev B models shipping with Seagate. While at the same time I received mine with the Hitachi.

RAID is a must for video editing. But if you're in the DV codec, it doesn't matter. A simple 7200rpm hard drive will do. Options for RAID:

1. RAID internal, then use an external for your boot drive. Personally, why??? It's like having your internal organs operating from the outside.
2. Modify your G5 internal to accept 3 more hard drives in front of the CPU fans. I'm still iffy on this as it does block the airflow and passes hot air (from the hard drives) onto the liquid cooling. Not my style.
3. Xserve RAID. Yeah, right. My personal dream to have. Of course I still have to pay for the G5 first. Maybe in a couple of years.
4. Cheaper external RAID solutions. The best so far is the G-RAID from Medea. Ultra cool and matches your G5 look. Check them out at http://www.medea.com.

Caution: DO NOT use your boot drive as your scratch disk for anything. Be it FCP, AE, Photoshop, etc. There's a reason why they call it a "scratch" disk.

If you want to use internal RAID, just wait for your G5 and check what disk it uses. You don't need to buy it at once. Enjoy the beast and make sure everything works before you do any changes. IMHO.
