For all of you who have received your new G5s... if you plan on selling/getting rid of your previous machines, what steps did you take to de-authorize your iTunes music. Do you need to do each song individually?

This is the first time I am replacing a MAC and I don't want to waste one of my allowed computers on the DRM.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Just to add, my 6/12 order is still showing ESD of 8/20. I guess I will find out in the morning.

No change in my status for delivery on or before 8/20. Well, I guess I'll know tomorrow one way or another.

Congratulations to everyone who got the good news today.

Drive brand

QUESTION: what brand hard drives are shipping in these G5's (160 GB models). I want to pick up another one before my G5 gets here so that I can RAID them. I want them to be the same brand... anybody willing to take a peak for me?

Mine (a 160GB) shows in system profiler as ST3160023AS. That means it is a Seagate Barracuda.

Hope that helps.

Hey LeonPro,

Do you find yourself having any of these scroll/rippling fan reving problems with your 2.5/9600xt?

Just curious if this is an across the board problem or just with certain units.

Thanks!

No problems here with the 9600xt. In fact I have been trying to make it happen - no luck so far. :D

That's all. Sure, I have been watching the water waiting for the pot to boil all day, and this is the first sign of tiny bubbles. Should I get excited? Ugh! I most probably won't be able to sleep. "with dreams of G5s dancing in my head."

HA! Wait until delivery day! You will run to the window for every noise that remotely resembles a delivery truck. It was ridiculous here.

RAID is a must for video editing. But if you're in the DV codec, it doesn't matter. A simple 7200rpm hard drive will do.

If you want to use internal RAID, just wait for your G5 and check what disk it uses. You don't need to buy it at once. Enjoy the beast and make sure everything works before you do any changes. IMHO.

Thanks Leon. I do most editing in DV, but have some BetaSP projects as well. I was considering the G-Raid, but wasn't sure if it would be robust enough for SD. It says it can do a couple streams, but I don't know if I want to trust it to that. Do you have one?

I asked about a month ago about the G5 Jam Internal raid, but they hadn't tested or fit it into a dual2.5 yet. Good thoughts about waiting to make any changes.

As far as the scratch disk: I guess it would be better to have two seperate drives, one a scratch, rather than use both for a 2 drive RAID that had everything on it, eh?

Sorry, perhaps off topic, but I can't remember what this thread started out as anyway, we've all been here WAY too long.

STATS: 8-19 Late Night Edition

Wow what a day.....

It was a dreadfully quiet morning & early afternoon in the USA with just a few non-USA orders shipping.

Just when some of us were thinking the "slippage" hammer was going to fall with a mass email saying the Aug 20 date would slip......ship announcements started popping up here and there out of nowhere!

After an evening of sporadic activity, the smoke has cleared to reveal a total of 13 shipping announcements or confirmations either having shipped today or going out tomorrow.

Its midnight here, 11:00 pm on the west coast, and 2:00 am on the east coast and we have yet to hear of a non-6800 order slipping past 8-20 That's GREAT news gang!!!...... except the undeservedly unfortunate GeckoHD (my heart once again goes out to you).

Its pretty cool looking at the spreadsheet now. I changed the "shipping pie" so that pending orders are all now 8-20 orders that are shipping and the red part of the pie are 8-20 orders that still need to ship.

We had 13 come in today, but need another 49 to get out of the woods tomorrow.....boring is not a word I would use to describe tomorrow.

Goodnight...I pass the torch to Europe & Australia.

Yes, definitely a separate disk for your work files and a separate disk for your apps. A scratch disk was created to handle intensive reading/writing tasks, which could not be handled by allocating into your RAM. I mean, come on, who [individual] could afford an 8GB set up anyway? That's USD4,800.00 plus USD3,000.00 for the G5.

The disk allows for temporary storage for your project to play around in. Thush, this constant fragmentation relieves your main disk from the stress and allows quicker access. Ideally, after each project you reformat your scratch disk and zero out the data so you can prepare for your next project with no fragmentation. Something you wouldn't dare do when sharing with the boot disk.

What I do is have my internal scratch disk then transfer the files to my LaCie drives for archive. I am thinking of the G-RAID to experiment for longer projects since I can't personally afford an Xserve RAID. I wouldn't trust it to keep up with multiple streams, but I think it will hold up especially if you install a separate Firewire 800 PCI card so as not share the same bus with the built-in Firewire.

I can't seem to find out how to put down "canceled" on the shipping lists.

...hmmm... what to do, what to do...

No such offer here in GB. However, my delay notice says 3 September for my 6800 anyway. I would love to know if any others awaiting a 6800 in GB have recieved the above offer.

Having read the above notice I don't trust the 3rd September date I bet I am delayed again 'till the 13th.

Why does Aple treat those in the USA so much better than the rest of the world?

Not that much better, i read that choosing option one costs an extra 50 bux

Well, sorry for the guys that ordered a g5 with an nvidia 6800, they will probably all be delayed, unless you choose the 9600xt as an option. It may sound a little awkward, but If i would have ordered the 6800, I would've known there was no way it would ship before september, cause apple said they wouldn't be shipping these cards until late august, and knowing apple, late august, will probably be begin of september..

But I would go for the 9600xt, and swap it with a 6800 later, so you have the best of both worlds

cheers guys

you guys so lucky!

Since I live in TAIWAN

Not 6800 nor HD30 will available in NEXT year!

by the way
what is stand alone kit?

I logged in to check my account this morning and the order status has gone offline. I have to type in a specific order number to see the status, which has never worked for me on past orders, so I don't know either way. If I don't get any thing from apple by the end of today then I'll email and ask for an update.

Yup, noticed the order status page had gone as well.
Entering the Web Order Number and postcode works fine for me though

That's never worked for me, going all the way back to when I bought my powerbook, maybe it's just cause I'm in th Channel Islands, they don't seem set up for us, always have to phone in the order or do it by email.

Hi matlo,

Tomorrow being Saturday 21st? That would be interesting, as when speaking to TNT Express they claimed that they would not deliver to me on Saturdays. Im looking at Monday at the moment, but if they are delivering to you on Saturday I might call them again and see what I can do.

Cheers

Iirc they do deliver on saturday but not for the shipping method apple uses

Shipping from Elk Grove, CA

As for my shipping method, I had chosen the free one, apparently fed-ex ground. This comes from being upset in the past when I had actually paid Dell for a 2 day shipping and only received ground shipping. Dell told me that I got it in two days and that they fufilled their obligation. I saw it a little differently. Oh well, that is a different conciousness.

I had assumed that Apple would be shipping from CA, not CN. I was relieved to see that it apparently was shipped from CA (this is what was on my invoice) and I would probably get the unit in 2-3 days and not 10 days. This is my assumption, but at this point have not seen FedEx show the unit in their system. When I see this kind of situation with something I buy on Ebay I call the seller and say "OK you printed out the label from the FedEx web site, now give them the unit so that they can ship it to me". My experience says that if I were to call FedEx they would tell me that they do not have the unit in their hands yet. I do not plan to rock the Apple boat in this manner.

I certianly wish good luck to all of the folks waiting for their miracle to occur. It is not unlike getting a ticket to a dead concert (ah but I show my age). I also would like to acknowledge the Nvida 6800 mess. In general a little communication would have softened this blow for all of you.

Saturday pickup from FedEx

I see some folks are entertaining the idea of saturday pickup (although it is in Europe). My experience with FedEx is that they are more than willing to give someone a package that they have at their depot (assuming you can identify yourself as the proper receiptiant).
So if your unit is shipped with fed ex and you see that it is in your town and it is a saturday, go to fedex and pick it up. My experience says they will give it to you.

Well, looks like I'm first on the 8/20 screwed list. Just checked my order at about 4:30 pst and my date is now listed as 9-27. Only thing that might give me any hope is that the day before my monitor shipped it was pushed back a month too. We'll see. I'm going to bed. If it's still in this state when I get up, I'm going to be ripping someone apart.
