Free 9600 card...

Yeah.... well sorta.... I can have my computer on the 9/2 with a 9600 card and get the 6800 card on the 17th or wait til the 17th for the whole thing...

So maybe... just maybe... I can get mine next week.... I can totally deal with the dealy on the actual 6800 card arrival.... but what to do with that stock 9600 card....

Duff-Man says...eBay, and/or put it up for sale in the marketplace forum here - there will be those that have the low end Nvidia cards that regret not paying that little bit more for the 9600xt....oh yeah!

What hardware test? Where is it located on the Harddrive?

It should be on a CD that came with the computer. Put it in your drive and reboot while holding down "c" (to tell the computer to boot off CD)

Passed the HW test - ram going in & test again.

Hey gang, just checking in again. I passed the hardware test! Looks like the ADC to DVI dongle is bad. I'll test the ADC @ a friends place (plug... http://www.doweb.com - h'es a great database website builder). If its good I'll swap the Dongle @ the apple store.

Looks like so far no one wants to go for maintaining the spreadsheet. Actually its really easy to do now...bout 30 minutes a day. Especially since we're past the hurrican of 8-20.

But the longer we go without someone to pick up the torch, the more there is to catch up on. Right now its the most accurate and complete tool there is for those remaining.

However, if no one wanted to I couln't blame them.....you have to be a bit "loose around the edges" to want to know that much detail.

I have two 1 gig ram dims to install & anoher HW test, then I'll be migrating my laptop over tonight, buying a 10k system boot drive, then using the stock 160 as my user data drive. Then get my 2nd monitor going, then tidy my worstation & take a pic for you all, then its on to deciding on RAID. I'd like to justify the expense of this system Kinda like the poor man's XRAID. Still on the fence though. Too much else to do.

Keep keepin' the faith gang!!

OT: 23" Aluminum Display is Pink

I just came from the Apple Store in SF. I was trying to look what I can equip with the G5. Of course I spotted the 23" with a G5. I immediately checked the color profile and found that they have customized/calibrated it. I found the stock Display Profile and switched on it and whoa  the screen turned into a pink hue. I checked a few more of the aluminum displays and all of them were calibrated, when I clicked on the stock profile - back to pink.

Professionals have to calibrate their monitors to match their color workflow. But it is my understanding that these are properly Mac-calibrated for general use. I'm not trying to diss the 23" screen because I'm going to get one soon. I'm just cautious in receiving another defective product twice in a row. I checked the Apple discussions and others have even reported a magenta hue. Magenta!

So pardon for the rant. I just wish they acknowledge and fix the problem soon.

I did reply, not by email though. I called it in, and talked to a rep. The rep told me that My G5 was in the build process. She did not kow how close it was to shipping though.
Yeah, I was told the same thing on my G5. However, I'm thoroughly convinced that when they say that it's "in the build process," it just means that the warehouse has the order in their computers. Whether they actually anticipate building it anytime in the next year or so is a different issue. My computer's been in the building stages for over a week now, but considering that it's got a 6800 in it, I'm not holding my breath too much...

I bought a 23" last Saturday and it is NOT pink. After seeing a VERY pink one in the Apple store, I was a bit scared. So far so good :)

The really weird thing is when I asked yesterday, they said my Mac has not been built yet.

Then it shipped today.

Good for me, not so good for Apple's internal systems and processes. Got the discount to boot, and now I am just hoping for a flawless build of the G5 and all components.

I can't wait. This has been fun. Yes, it sucks waiting, but it was a nice community spirit in our commiseration, now it feels like it'll be Christmas some time next week after all the anticipation.

We'll have to all get together again when we are all waiting for our PM Quad 6.0 in a few years.

I bet you're glad it's finally over! :D

What a childish and unwarranted insult... I don't remember doing anything to you. I'm done. :)
Wow.....the last thing I was trying to do was insult you. As a matter of fact, you've been really great to everyone. So I had ZERO motivation to try to do any harm.

I have a lot of compassion for your situation. I tried to show some of that in my last spreadsheet post today. Its not an easy spot to be in, and you've been taking it great (thumbs up)

Probably like many others here, if I was in your situation with shipping and delays, i WOULD look like your avatar. Kinda bugged out and freaky from all the ups & downs, the watching and the waiting.

I was attempting to allude to that in a humorous way, but didn't manage to do that. Absolutely no harm intended.

could it be!?

I just checked and none of my order info is available... hmm, could this mean that a shipping number is impending? Could the Apple fairy have come and granted my wishes? WTF would my G5 ship a week before it's supposed too, since I ordered from MacConnection?

WHY SO MANY DAMN QUESTIONS!

Thanks for the info. I guess when I buy mine, I'll have them test it right there and then I'll have it exchanged on the spot.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try to call them asap :) . I doubt that email will be as effective as calling.

By the way, I've confirmed it (via means I cannot express because the hour is much too late):

The G5's 'jiggle' on VGA screens is the fault of the DVI->VGA adapter that is included with the G5.

Use a 3rd party adapter (they are all identical in functionality) that does NOT have that crappy wet-noodle wire in between plugs and the problem will be, as arnold would say, TUHRMINATED.

I got the wavies shortly after boot up with the regular adapter, switched to a (non crappy) adapter, and no wavies.

This happened when using the crapple adapter on just about any card with a DVI plug, including a PCI Radeon 7000. This did not occur with either of the non-Apple adapters I had at my disposal.

All of these situations involve a large amount of EMR. Dual-monitor hookups and intermingled with 500watt AMD workstation cables. Some people only see them when their fans spin up. Mr. wizard says electric motors function on EMR, makes sense, doesn't it?

I almost understand now why people like digital displays.

PS I think the reason there are only 2 HD bays is because the processor radiator unit is too large. Using processor fans instead (blasphemy according to Apple I guess), would allow for the mobo to be smaller and the drive array to be bigger. Looking at mac mobos so much it's hard to see new things, just thought I'd share that observation with ya'll.

Serial Number

Still can't register my serial number. Wonder if there is still someone left with the same problem. If it was solved, did Apple contact you about it?

In the negotiations has anyone asked for free AppleCare (The 3-Year Extended Warrantee)?

Never heard anyone getting that from Apple, but you can always apply the discount towards Applecare.

Couldn't hurt to ask though.

Yeah, the default profile on mine is pink, as well. No problem, though. I just spent two minutes creating a profile(which everyone should do anyway) and the pink is gone. I don't know if I would exactly call this a "defect" since people should calibrate their monitors, anyway. Although it is a definite mistake on Apple's part, since I'm guessing the reason they switched to DVI is so a lot of PeeCee users could use the displays. Since they don't have the super wammydoodle calibrator like OSX has built in, they might be ticked by being stuck with a pink display.

Let's make a deal!

I've replied to a mail informing me that my 6800-equipped 2.5 has slipped from 31 Aug to 03 Sep (although we have since heard dates as late as 17 Sep, the most recent mail from the UK indicates the 3rd).

I referenced the deals some people are getting with the 9600XT card on their CTO NOW with the knowledge that their 6800 card would ship when there was ample supply, and asked if I could get the same deal.

I didn't ask for money back -- and shipping in the UK is already 'free' - so maybe I could guilt them into a new iSight or something? :)

NB: I tried to call them on Saturday, because the red telephone graphic on the UK store homepage indicates Saturday hours. They lie. Why do they lie?

Ordered it

Really got tired of being jealous. So I ordered one too. Orderd at the Apple
online store in Japan on the 22nd today. It says it will not ship until Sept 29. Just added 2 GB of Ram and the 250 GB disk with a US keyboard. After it is close to arriving I'll go to the new Apple store in Shinsaibashi and pick up a 23in display to go with it. Drolling to long.....hardly wait
