invaLPsion, why don't you duct tape the etched panel to your current Mac, run a garden hose next to it and make believe it's a liquid cooled G5!!! L@@k at the money you would save!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

gave up on Mac Mall - bought at Dallas (Willow Bend) Apple Store

With all the stories of Apple Stores having DP2.5s in stock, I called one in Dallas Friday night and found they had at least 6. I waited until Saturday night to get an update from Mac Mall since they said another batch might be coming in, but my order still said backordered. So I bought a DP2.5, a 23" Cinema HD, AppleCare, a discounted .mac subscription for when mine runs out, and an ADC-to-vga adapter to hook up a second monitor. Now I don't have to worry about whether or not Mac Mall would ship to my while I was on vacation.

I used the utility to transfer everything from my SP733 and installed an extra 1GB RAM I'd previousdly bought from Mac Mall plus an updated MOTU PCI-424 digital audio I/O card. After a few hard crashes (forced restart), I decided to part with any previous app installs and configs and reinstall OSX. TechTool Deluxe reported all the hardware was fine.

The OSX installer aborted just when transfer of software was to start, right after the drive had been reformatted, saying something was wrong with the install. After this happened twice I took out the new RAM and PCI card. That seemed to fix it. The reinstall was successful.

Eventually I reinstalled the RAM and starting loading software packages. I kept testing the apps that had previously hard-crashed and finally felt that the system was stable. I installed the PCI card in the top slot instead of the one next to the AGP slot. This seemed to work. There's lots of effort ahead to get this beast fully configured, but I'm looking forward to putting it to good use.

It cost me a lot more to buy it locally (taxes and no discount), but peace of mind can be priceless.

Really got tired of being jealous. So I ordered one too. Ordered at the Apple
online store in Japan on the 22nd today. It says it will not ship until Sept 29. Just added 2 GB of Ram and the 250 GB disk with a US keyboard. After it is close to arriving I'll go to the new Apple store in Shinsaibashi and pick up a 23in display to go with it. Drolling to long.....hardly wait

bee

It would be a good idea to have the 23" Display on the same order as your G5. That way Applecare will cover them both, it is just a smart move. It is also a good idea to get the extended 3 year warranty, you just never know when it will be needed.

Yeah.... well sorta.... I can have my computer on the 9/2 with a 9600 card and get the 6800 card on the 17th or wait till the 17th for the whole thing...

So maybe... just maybe... I can get mine next week.... I can totally deal with the delay on the actual 6800 card arrival.... but what to do with that stock 9600 card....

If I were you, I'd wait and get the G5 on the 17th. That way you won't have to install or deal with the extra 9600 card. Then the 6800 will only be an extra $450. What's an additional 3 weeks, when you will have the top of the line set to go when it arrives.

Cards are not hard to install.

Get the computer.

Have an extra card for multiple displays or sell it.

I definitely agree that you should get the 9600xt - i don't believe that you can use it for multiple displays though - the G5 only has one AGP slot.

You can probably sell it on Ebay for at least $100-$200 though. A brand new 9600xt for the PC sells for $180, and I don't even think you can buy one retail for the mac (or a 9600 pro). That leaves someone's only option for a new retail video card as a $329 9800 pro. I bet you should be able to find some bidders who don't want to spend that much, but do want to upgrade.

PowerMac shipping ramp

I know many of you were complaining last week, including stock analyst about the chip delay. But it seems there is increasing information from posts on this board and reports of inventory by Apple stores to show that in the last 5 days shipments have been ramping rapidly and their is no reason to no expect this trend to continue. I just bet a big dollar that everyone who ordered a G5 without the Nvida card will have shipping confirmation by next Friday. Not a bad catchup! It is not Apple's fault for the G5 units with Nvida as that is Nvida issue and not indicative of Apple/iBM chip issue.

The PC version is $130 ( www.pricewatch.com ), remember, it's the 128 model.

I don't think you'll be able to sell it for more than $60, and the difference between the 5200 (the lowest card shipped in a powermac) and the 9600 might not be enough to get anyone to pay up.

ONLY G5's can use that card, so don't think you can use it in another mac.

I'd get ready to toss the 9600XT. Look at it as the "get your computer sometime this quarter" tax.

My bad. I knew it was AGP but I was thinking PCI.

I agree.....that Apple warrenty could be a life-saver someday!

applecare

I understand that people want to protect their $3000-5000 computer investment. This is smart. However, keep in mind that you are paying for a high-quality made computer. Care and precision went into the engineering of Apple hardware products. I sort of think that Applecare is a gimmick.

My current G4 is more than 4 years old and I have not had any serious issues with it. The power supply fan made noise but I cleaned it and it stopped.

Also, the computers longevity depends on the user too. Some people treat their material goods like crap...

Duff-Man says....while I am getting excited about mine arriving on mon/tues, I am also glad that I have the weekend to prepare properly too - cleaning out old stuff I don't need before doing final backups, organizing all the documents I had been tossing in the "misc." folder (doesn't everybody have one of those?)...then when it finally arrives I'll *really* be ready to jusy plug it in and transfer away.....oh yeah!

That folder has always been called "Stuff" on my boxes :)

exactly, i've had my g4 for 3 years without any problems, my clamshell ibook is 4 years old. i even have a mac plus that still runs flawless, over 17 years by now.

applecare is however a good thing to invest in if you have a portable computer you lug around every day, notebooks take a beating.

My Dual G4 was only 18 months old when one of the CPUs failed.

Cost of repair.......$650
Applecare............$250
-----------------------------------
Savings...............$400

And one has to wonder about "preferential treatment" with regard to those who opt for Applecare. . . .

Finally shipped my 2.5... sort of

My order is a 2.5, 9600XT. combo, sans modem (educational) palced on 6/9 at 11am.

Got yet another bump notice on Friday, changing status to 8/30, but received my shipping confirmation on Saturday morning. Still isn't trackable though. Finally, the wait is over it seems. What a disappointing experience this has been in every respect. Hope the thrill sets in when this thing arrives, so far I'm just sort of numb from the ups and downs of the last 6mos of anticipation, disappointment, ordering, waiting, disappointment, etc....

Hey, you people want me to post a picture of the FedEx guy picking my Liquid Not So Kewl G5 up and taking it back to Apple? :D :D :D :D :D

Where is that guy that was going to give $100.00 to my favoite charity if I could get a picture of him having cookies and Tea with me? How much extra would you donate if I give him Exlax cookies? I bet he would get my G5 back to Apple REAL FAST!! :D :D :D :D :D

Any bets on whether Apple will ship the delayed G5s (the ones that now have a 9600XT, and ONLY those (just to clarify to some people that easily get confused here, those orders in which people chose to receive a 9600XT now and a 6800 self-install kit later)) Monday/Tuesday?

And some other questions:

invaLPsion - Won't the MacSkinz side panel allow dust to be sucked right into the G5, as there is not a seal between the panel and the G5 except for 4 suction cups? What about electromagnetic interference protection that the normal case provides? Just some thoughts...

I'll have everything I need for the G5, except for something to put it on. Recommend any desks for the G5 and 30" HD? I want room to spread out, so I'm thinking about a 60-70" desk. Any brands or places to look? Staples, OfficeMax, OfficeDepot, have nothing. I'm in New York.... Maybe a nice reclining desk chair too, .

Each time my phone vibrates, my heart skips a beat. Was that the SMS my Powerbook sent me, notifying me of my G5 shipping?

I had one of those instances today. My phone started vibrating, and said "1 missed call". I dialed my voicemail, and there was a message saying, "Hi Muhammad Al ______, I just wanted to let you know that we're going to be 20 minutes late arriving to the site."

Oh great, I wonder how the terrorists got my number! (no offense to any ppl named Muhammad Al)

HAHAHAHAHA

zero chance?

They said September 3rd.. after delaying you 3 weeks (I'm sure you were bumped twice), do you think 1 more will make any difference? They'd rather use the G5 procs for the new iMacs coming in September (which take significantly longer to install).

I'm almost positive that some of the iMacs that will come out in September (or October) will ship immediately, in part due to your sacrifice.
