First Impression

Got the G5 yesterday.

First Impressions , oh my god ...... This thing is so smooth.

Ran the hardware test everything is A okay. So far everything has been pretty much flawless.

Had a couple of problems with a couple of applications after running the setup assistant :-

1. Needed to reinstall Norton AV since Live update didn't work
2. Stuff it expander did work , kept crashing every time I upacked something , install v8 and now everything is fine
3. IntelliJ was not transfered by setup assistant.

Apart from that , had no problems with MS Office v10 or Office 2004 which was a big suprise. Thought MS wonderful ;) registration process would mean I would need to re-register , not a bit of it . :D

iPod works flawlessly with the new machine.

One thing I did note. When I fired up the machine for the first time , I didn't immiediately run the setup assistant. I registered the machine under my name ( my wife is the registered owner of our G4 ). When I subsequently ran the setup assistant after restarting the machine it asked me to register the mac again ( and gave me a choice of me or my wife to register as the owner ) stuck to me though.

Other than the above , everything has lived upto expectations.

Also , I have my iTunes library on separate firewire drive , after running setup assistant I plugged the fire drive into the back of the G5 and hey presto iTunes picked up the library quite happily.

The PC world could definately learn a thing or two from this.

Its great to see the list of people waiting for their G5s to be shipped on my site start to shrink at last. Dont forget to keep your details updated.

http://powermacs.plasticated.com

I finally have a tracking number, so it seems my misery will be over next week sometime :)

Still no tracking number or email for me! (ordered 6/10, ~6am pst)

Order status @apple.com was unavailable a few minutes ago, but is up now... still shipping on or before 8/30.

If mine doesn't ship tomorrow, I may cancel and order elsewhere or try my local Apple store. The thing is, I want my 9800XT for Motion...

Wow.....the last thing I was trying to do was insult you. As a matter of fact, you've been really great to everyone. So I had ZERO motivation to try to do any harm.

I have a lot of compassion for your situation. I tried to show some of that in my last spreadsheet post today. Its not an easy spot to be in, and you've been taking it great (thumbs up)

Probably like many others here, if I was in your situation with shipping and delays, i WOULD look like your avatar. Kinda bugged out and freaky from all the ups & downs, the watching and the waiting.

I was attempting to allude to that in a humorous way, but didn't manage to do that. Absolutely no harm intended.

OK then. My bad, I misinterpreted it... :)

Something to think about getting for your awesome new G5...

Anyone ever thought of adding style to their G5? Check out a clear G5 side panels from www.macskinz.com. You can buy the clear panel for $30 or the etched panel for $40. (Shipping is $7.) I took delivery of an etched panel on the 19th in preparation of my G5 arriving the next week. (Not happening :D ) The panel is made of lucite and is very cool. It allows you to look in on the beautifully crafted inerts of your G5! Check it out!

(No, I am not employed my MacSkinz, I just figured since everyone was reviewing their G5s I'd review the stuff I have waiting for my G5. :D )

shipped! at last

I have finally received a tracking number! :D Ordered on 6/14 and can't wait to have my first mac! Will keep everyone updated.

It's Shipped!!!

After going through the agony of the Aug. 30 delay email & having to reply back to Apple whether I still wanted to receive it, this morning an email from Apple:

Dear Apple Customer / Cher client, Chère cliente Apple,

The following products shipped on 08/21/2004. Transit time will
depend upon whether you have chosen standard or premium freight
options.

Go figure? I'm am really looking forward to this, it seems like I've been waiting forever. I've been prepared with all my major application updates since Dec/Jan (as they wont run in 9.1 they're still boxed (edit typo)) & now I'll finally get to use them. I hope everyone else gets theirs soon.

Looks like some orders are finally entering Canada. Hooray! :p

Hang in there Frink. I know you've waited longer & I'm sure it'll be very soon.

Everyone has it's own taste, and it's a choice everyone has to make for him/herself. Me personally, never found one single product that makes my Apple-products look better than they allready are when designed by Apple.

I think, Most of that stuff hugely trashes the beautifull design Apple first intended.

Again, NO pun intended! It's just everyone his/her own opinion!

Parallel experience here too, Matlo, Same w/ StuffIt, etc. It was a little clunky w/ my Wacom software. Mouse wasn't acting right on the tablet. Just reinstall.

The thing is a work of art, isn't it, and I don't say that lightly. "Smooth" is right. Talk about gorgeous on the inside! It just puuurrrrs.

Still getting over that fact I have mine, and paid less than my now canceled at MacMall :D

Waiting for your G5 DP 2.5??

If you are waiting for your new G5 2.5 Ghz from the Apple online stores, Take Heart. Things may not be as bad as you are led to believe.
I ordered my G5 on June 10th and have been reading this thread since it was started on July 13th. My original shipping date was 7/30 like everyone else, which was changed to 8/20. I, like every one else wanted to belive Apple would ship before that date but as I was reading all the posts on this thread thursday night and friday morning of all the people getting their machines I was getting excited in anticipation. I had originally ordered the computer on my credit card but my employer volunteered to buy it for me so I changed the order to the company card about a week later.
On friday morning while reading about all the units being shipped and after checking the Apple Order Status site for the 1000th time I decided to call Apple to see if having the computer shipped to a different address (my home) than the card it was being charged against (the business). The person on the phone said there where no problems and that my computer was scheduled to be shipped in the next 12 to 24 hours. I was encouraged by that, but then my son called, and asked me if I was on my way home, He told me the Fedex truck just left a big black box on the front porch.
On friday evening I checked my e-mail and still had not recieved a shipping order from apple and the Apple Order Status page had not been updated.
on Saturday morning when I checked my e-mail I had recived notice from apple my computer would not be shipped until 8/30. Today I checked the Apple Order Status and it has now been updated to show the delay.

So take heart things may be much better than you think! but you won't know till you see that big black 50 lb. box at the front door.

I still don't have a tracking number.

Oh the computer's appearance is built like the finest of the fine automobiles and it is totally silent except for a little fan noise on rare occations. I just wish I had the room on top of my desk to put it on display instead of under it.

Roger, Thanks a lot. I just ordered it. "Price is not guaranteed till shipping" (whatever that crap means) but its orderd. Aside from only supporting AutoShutdown on PCs, its perfect for the price.

Thanks dude!

Where's the info about it not doing an auto shutdown except on the PC? - I juyst ordered one too, and I figured the 'bulldog pro' software functioned the same under OSX as PC!?

Yepper, on the appearance and the fans.

That's why I don't use a desk, per se. I use a nice, rectangular, shaker style, pine, former kitchen table. ;) Holds my behemoth 24" CRT and my 20" Apple LCD (ironically, my main monitor), two wacom tablets, speakers, Lacie FW Drive,...and my G5 nicely perched, keeping away from the nasties on the floor, not to mention a much better airport signal for me (Apple still needs to upgrade their upgraded external antennae system -- this one's a little joke. Guess they don't want something bigger on there to scream that airport range ain't all that great, period?).

invaLPsion, why don't you duct tape the etched panel to your current Mac, run a garden hose next to it and make believe it's a liquid cooled G5!!! L@@k at the money you would save!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

The twelve days of G5-mas

OK, it's 12 days until my latest posted ship date -- however I sent the email inquiring about the possibility of a 9600/6800 substitution to get it sooner. I mentioned also that I have another monitor I can use (as I have a 30" monitor attached to the order).

Funny thing is, I don't want it to ship between the 31st -5th, as I'll be in Paris for the Apple Expo! If it is not in my hands on the 31st I will cancel (I know, 'boy who cried wolf'), but if I've waited this long... I can wait another month.

It would be really refreshing actually to wait until their backlog has cleared and get shipping within 24 hours
