my 2.5 experience so far:
ran hardware test out of the box and after i installed 2 gigs of corsair twinX CL2 ram, software updates and additional software installation....passed both times. machine runs great BUT i do have the scrolling distortion/fan revs (i don't think i would have noticed but i read threads on the problem at the apple discussion forum only to find them on my machine)...they do not stop production of machine but just knowing it's there bothers me. anyone with a 9600XT card should check it out. i would bet it's a driver issue...

I suggest you call Apple ASAP and get a case number started on it. They need to know about all these units with this problem.

e-mail false alarm

just got an e-mail from Apple!

Am I on everyone's ignore list or something?

I had the same problem with my G5 on a VGA monitor, the problem was the DVI->VGA adapter that Apple included--it was crap.

Replace it with a 3rd party adapter (it's a standardized system so you can buy PC) and it'll be all good.

The reason it only effects certain people is because of conditions in the area around the computer and the fact that many people are using digital displays (which need no DVI adapter, and probably wouldn't have a problem anyway).

My issue did not come up when I scrolled or anything, just wavies in general.

Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware of any mac retail stores in OK. Wow.

Dogcow, below is a quote from a previoius post, now that I've got your attention ;):

"Oh my Gawd this feels so good to type...

kgforce, I feel your pain, and that e-mail you got confirms how I just "squirreled" out here in my "fly over country" state.

On a whim I called a small reseller store, an hour away. The gal said yes, we have the 2.5. I made her go and get someone else, "Yep, we have it. Got two."

The nice sales gal proceeded to negotiate w/ me to compete w/ and so I could cancel my MacMall order (Gawd, those bastards p*ssed me off in the last couple of days, not to mention a different story every time you call. They will NOT tell you where you are in the Que., or even give you a ballpark. The sales manager gotta pretty smart *ssie w/ me, after I really questioned whether it's good business to be able to tell your customers your 208th on the list or 25th? So this feels extra good).

Anyway, headed out the door to go pick it up. When in hand the cell phone will be dialing MacMall w/ glee, telling them not to bother, after all.

"Studio Dweller" I strike a blow for us. I wish I wish I could take you w/ me. We've been comparing MacMall notes all along, BTW."

*You see this quoted post above, SD, a couple of pages back? What are the odds on the same day, we punt and go find our own? Yep good decision. Sure as hell glad minewasn't hit by a bus like yours (I felt sheepish after reading your account that I didn't even check). This small store was an hour away, one way. Congrats, man. I guess I did "take you w/ me", after all. Get this: The Fed Ex slip shows they've had these two units since the 13th. Who did MacMall piss off that their rep didn't give them squat? You know, over all, my experinece w/ them on this was pretty bad. Hmmmm. What else can explain even the mom and pop resellers are showing units? Apple must really put a priotity on the brick and mortar over the individuals and the internet resellers, eh? Seems damn obvious to me.

I hope its just a driver issue. I suspect a hardware issue, not enough RAM and no nVidia 6800 Ultra card. The 6800 Ultra has its own onboard graphics processor which takes a burden off the cpu(s). I get fan revs everytime I do a crop in Photoshop CS, for example. I hope I'm wrong as that's an additional $600 bucks just for the card, albeit a nice one.

Your slot of most unfortunate has now been filled by someone else---but I retired from updating the spreadshett so I have no clue (that felt good to say)

CONGRATULATIONS Frinky!!! You deserved it more than anyone. When I get a chance I'll post some more stuff on mine for those that are waiting.

In the meantime, quick heads up warning. If you network via ethernet to another computer, and create aliases in the left column in the finder (of the g5) of folders on that networked machine........then start messing with view options (text size etc...)then close that finder window.....you may crash the finder. I did. I couldn't get any finder windows open after that. Going in and trashing all user preferences fixed it, but nothing else did safe mode...software update to x.3.5, permission repair etc etc. It corrupted my view preferences so I just tossed them all.

I was trying to find any bugs before I migrated the laptop so I wouldn't have to clean up then migrate again.

Cheers,

Duff-Man says....my first post using the new Dual 2.5! I got a bit sidetracked this afternoon with a call from work and a software issue there that needed some input....got that done...finished backing up stuff on the ol' G4....plugged in the new G5 and immediately ran the thorough hardware test....everything checks out perfectly....did the data transfer - smooth sailing. My extra GB of RAM from Crucial didn't show up today - delayed at Canada Customs so it missed the flight from Vancouver - as a result I am using just a pitiful 1.5GB (Ha!) at the moment.

First impressions....I was a bit nervous when I booted off the hardware test CD and the fans kicked in - loud! But running "normal" now it is super quiet - much better than my Quicksilver. It is fast...very fast....have not run any tests/benchmarks yet but I sure can tell the difference...tomorrow I will start doing some work in Reason and that will give me a good indication of what I have here. For tonight though, I will just cruise around, checking out all the little apps to if any need reinstalling.....I took a few pics...will put them on my .mac page later on....oh yeah!

Brykken may now have my former title of "most unfortunate." I am happy to pass it on but I wish it was to someone who didn't order on June 9th... :(

how loud?

How "loud" are you talking, Duff-Man?
as in "you have to raise your voice to be heard in the room" loud
or "I thought this thing was liquid-cooled - I actually notice the fan in the background" loud?

6800 card delayed until October?

Just checked the Apple online store. The 6800 card has a estimated shipping date of October. If you configure any G5 with the card it also has a October date.
That sucks for anyone lucky enough to have ordered a 30 inch display.

My 6800DDL order status says 9/17 just like the Apple e-mail said it would. Im sure they were delayed until Oct so that they can get all the cards out to us who ordered it early.

other than that, the machine is fantastic. heavy, hot, and fast...
i'm glad i got the unit when i did cause i knew my order would be pushed back (ordered 7.7.04 - "on or before 8.31.04"). the funny thing is, i keep coming back to this thread to see how everyone else is doing. it's like a soap opera... i hope you all get your machines quick.

here's a pic of my 2.5's new home

Excellent post - precise, to the point, with all of the information I need to make a good buying decision. Best of all - perfect use of the apostrophe!

BTW: Quite a setup you have. While I'll never have anything quite like it, it certainly is great to see. (...then again...if I sell my car, plane, ...)

Great news!! That first post sure is a good feeling isn't it. It was a bit of a rush for me. --E

Duff-Man says....lets just say louder than I expected. But as I said - that was *only* while running the thorough hardware test suite which puts all the fans in high-gear. Since that I have been opening apps - Garageband, Reason, Arturia Moog Modular etc etc...and the fans have not kicked in at all and it is very quiet.....oh yeah!

What exactly does running the hardware test do for you?

Is it necessary?

This batch of G5s isn't having as many problems, correct?

(Did everyone go through this the day before their G5 arrived? :) I'm nervous as hell. I hope there are no problems!! )

I'm very happy for you! I will be looking forward to your posts with regard to first impressions, noise factor (if there is one) and other impressions as well. I'm still deciding between a 2.0 (Rev B. means fewer problems, right? Right?) or going for broke with a 2.5. Rev A. issues always scare me away from such a large purchase.

Again, all the best, happy computing, and keep us in your thoughts and posts.

This post is getting sickening for me.. seeing everyone who ordered before AND after me recieve their machines while mine is still....ehh... "OPEN".. makes me sick :( . I called and asked politely for compensation and.. they said they don't OFFER anyone compensation.

Oh Yeah!!!

Si-Valleyguy says....Greetings to the great white north, Duff-Man! Awesome set-up!!! Good luck with your G5 2.5! Do let us know about the fan revs when you start doing some graphic stuff. We both have the same mouse, many of the same stomp boxes, into the music thing, and I expect enjoy a doughnut and a cold green brewsky. Thanks for your steady positive input. It helped me during these furtive and somewhat desperate times.......oh yeah!

Rock-on Duff-Man! Though I have to admit that seeing your old Quicksilver there reminded me how much I liked (and miss) that design.

DUFF- You are a keyboard playing fool. You're going to love how that G5 rips through everything!!

Took my G5 to my friends house ( http://www.doweb.com ). He hit the power button, fiddle with a couple things across the room. When I told him it was booted, he spun around a freaked out at how fast the boot was. We hit power on his G4 silver machine, then power on the G5, opened safari, flew through a few windows AND restarted it with time to spare before his even finished booting.

I was feeling a little like I couldn't believe the G5 was mine.... --E

Congrats

Great setup - it's great to see that there are still a few "reel" people out there. I don't have any Tascams, but have a half dozen each Akais and TEACs - which look good alongside my 20" Cinema and iPod. (Funny how great machines always seem to weigh 50-60 lbs.!)

Still don't know if I'll go for a 2.5 or a tried and true 2.0...keep us posted!

Currently own a Dual 1.25 G4...and a never been used new in box 4600SX! Oh yeah!
