Congratulations to Mr. 4000 from Mr. 3000.

I'm about to go over to the local Apple Retail Store (they got some 2.5's in this morning) and pick up a G5, try to keep the EDU discount and 6800 discount. Wish me luck.

Memory speed

My 2.5DP shipped on Wednesday, and is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. I'm planning to buy more memory from Crucial, and I notice that I have the option of CL 3 and CL 2.5 memory.

Can someone who has already received their 2.5 check the Apple System Profiler and tell me what speed their memory is? It will be listed at PC3200U-XXYYY. The XX will be 25 (for CAS Latency 2.5) or 30 (for CL 3.0).

For those who don't know, CAS latency affects the response speed of the chips (above the effect of the clock speed). A CL2.5 stick is faster than a 3.0, but you will only see an effect if ALL of your memory is 2.5. So if the stock RAM is CL3, then there's no reason to pay the 50% premium for CL2.5 memory.

Thanks!

Two months and six days later, my G5 has arrived. Woo! Unfortunately, I'm at work until 5 so I'll have to wait until then to hook it up. Only 5.5 hours until I get to boot this baby up!

That's Two months and six days closer to 3.0's.

All of my memory, both the two 512MB sticks from Apple and the two 512MB sticks from Crucial.com, as reported as "PC3200U-30330".

Ah sweet, totally didn't pay attention to that. I think this was asked at 3000 but what is the longest thread of Macrumors.com history?

Computer & monitor shipped together?

For those that selected the "ship items together" option with a G5 and a monitor did they arrive on the same day on the same truck? Thanks.

chess nightmare...

Hi all, first time here. Was being very zen about the delays (ordered right at the beginning) here in Uk till the last couple of days when I knew TnT had it up the road from me and were not able to deliver at any time I was in. Loads of hassle, then finally tonight, my brand spanking new mac. Never mind the delays and the arguments about apple care (bought the display on a seperate order - noone told me it wasn't covered), absolutely loved it. Until I tried playing chess and it started to go to sleep of its own accord. I'm guessing that's the most processor intensive thing I've done so far but it just cuts out, and keeps doing it while chess is open, falling asleep at every move, even more so if the computer voice is on. I'm brand new to macs and worried that my (so far very bad) experience of them is about to get worse. I've looked about for how to deal with this but can't find anything. Anyone out there that can point me in the right direction would make my night.
Enjoyed following this forum btw.

It's here! And I'm typing on it now!! Oh man, it was SOOOOO worth the wait. As much as it sucked it definatly made me appreciate it more! :D

Congratulations! Exciting isn't it?

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the Mac devoted website "As The Apple Turns" mentioned this forum in Monday's episode scene 3. If you've never been there, you should read their stuff. It's always very entertaining and informative (heavy on entertaining). Did invaLPsion get his 2.5 yet? I can't access the DB any longer to check.

Aye, on Tuesday. :)

Apple is Screwy.

Yeah... so I went down to the Apple Store thats 15 minutes from my house. They have had a G5 on hold for me since it came in this morning.

I then call up the Apple Online Store on my cellphone, and attempt to get the G5 2.5 at the Apple Retail Store, and keep the $305 Nvidia 6800Ultra DDL.

And... as I have been told countless times, this was 100% impossible.

So... I hang up and call again.

This time, after being told that it was 100% impossible they offered me ANOTHER $100 off!!!

I was TRYING to buy a machine for the same price from the same company, and they want to give me another $100.

So I still have to wait a week for my G5, but the discounts i've accumulated since purchasing this behemoth over 2 months ago make up for it I guess.
-$300 Edu Discount on G5
-$150 "9600XT" Discount
-$45 Edu Discount on 6800 Ultra
-$100 "Please don't cancel" Discount #1
-Free Priority Overnight Shipping
-$100 "Please don't cancel" Discount #2 (but this one makes no sense)

Anyway, try to get whatever you can get i guess... At this point my current config with the 6800DDL costs less than my original config with the 9800XT. Go figure.

Congratulations on your new mac!

I'm no Boris but I've just tried the Chess prog while playing iTunes and folding with both processors. No glitches here. Worth looking for your system preferences and selecting "Energy Saver", where there's options for puting the screen to sleep, among other things.

Hope this helps

PLease tell me which number you called, and what you said. I ordered through ADC and I can't seem to get any add ons or discounts for free. I ordered on 6/11 and have a delivery date of 9/03. If there's any tricks you could give me I'd love to hear. Thanks.

First of all, you can't ask for them... but I've been calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, then go through the menu to the update/change order option.

They keep offering me stuff after I try to get them to let me pick up a G5 at the Apple Retail Store and keep the discount on the 6800Ultra stand-alone kit.

Good luck, if they don't offer anything, call back again.

Hi, thanks.
It started doing it not only in the chess but also when I wanted to import a cd in itunes, then even when I wanted to fill out a form for a website. I checked everything in energy saver and in various sleep modes. None of it worked, so I gave up and turned it off - now half an hour later the fans seem loud all of a sudden, and everything is working. I have no clue what happened? Looking about it seems that there've been a lot of issues with this sleep/freeze thing.

Jumping right into the forum topic of the year...

...haven't posted before but have been reading it for weeks now and have enjoyed hearing stories about folks getting their 2.5's and feeling the pain of those who are still waiting.

I ordered a 2.5 on 7.22 with 512 Megs RAM, 250 Gig HD, and AppleCare from my local Apple reseller and was given an estimated shipdate of 9.2. So far, the shipdate is holding up, but, considering what others have been through, I am not betting the farm. Still, I am encouraged by the reports of 2.5's actually being delivered.

508th Man computes with a DP 500 MHz G4, an 800MHz G3 iBook, (and a K&E slide rule!).

As long as there's no 6800Ultra you should be fine for 9/2.

The funniest part of the As The Apple Turns article is the link to the photo album featuring the slowly unboxed G5, over 11,000 hits.

Recursivejon--

Oops, forgot to mention I did order the 9600XT.

Thanks for the encouragement.

508th Man also computes with MacSE and bondi iMac.

G5 2.5's Shipping and vid cards

Okay, since I only got one response in
the game forum, I thought I'd try here...

To all you folks that are upgrading to the
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra...Why?

Are you driving two 30" monitors?

It seems to me that if you're going to be playing
games that you're only shooting yourselves in
the foot...I don't know, I'm askin' here, so no
flames, 'kay?

As much as I'd like Apple to write different (and actually
USABLE) drivers for the vid cards, that doesn't seem to
be happening.

I've had different video cards, and only ONE (from a now
defunct company) has been able to do anti-aliasing.
Maybe the OS I'm running doesn't enable some features
(10.2.8).

Do you guys know something (and it's entirely possible that
you do) that I don't?

Any enlightenment would be appreciated regarding anti-aliasing
on ANY video cards, 'cause my nVidia GeForce 4 Ti sure doesn't
have it...

Getting it for 3D modeling / animation / design + its nice having a graphics card that can drive the next generation of LCD panels and is up to par with some of the consumer PC 3D graphics cards. I know a workstation card like the FireGL or the Quadro is better for what I aim to do, but at the time they dont make any workstation cards for Macs.

Plus, like i said before, at this point my order with a 6800Ultra is costing me less than my original order with the 9800XT.

Awesome

Came today at 1:50pm UPS ground. 2 days from Memphis. Was ordered from MacMall. This thing is whisper quiet. I was really worried with all the fan problems I had heard about. It's 10 times quieter than my Daul 800mhz G4.

No problems so far. Setup Assistant seems to have worked great. Had to reinstall Stuffit. That's been it so far.

The only problem I have found so far is Photoshop will only show that I have 1781mb of memory. I have 4GB. I have heard that Photoshop will only use 2GB. I dumped all my Photoshop Application and Perferences and it still only show 1781mb of memory.

Anyone have any ideas?
