PLease tell me which number you called, and what you said. I ordered through ADC and I can't seem to get any add ons or discounts for free. I ordered on 6/11 and have a delivery date of 9/03. If there's any tricks you could give me I'd love to hear. Thanks.

I have a story has some things in commun with recursivejon. This afternoon my local educational reseller returned my call saying they had a G5 2.5 in stock! In Canada! I was confused since a got a email yesterday stating my order was in process at the Apple Store... I wanted my G5 Now! Ordered june 9th... So called 1800MYAPPLE asking to cancel my order for 'personal reasons'. They refused stating my order was in process... i argued that their 'Order Status' still stated 'open'... The guy immediately offered 100 $ off. Since i was hesitating he offered another 90 $ after contacting his supervisor. That was in addition to another 100 $ off last week. That makes it 290 $ which represent a 7.2 % rebate. Well i agreed (did i have a choice) ;-)

Since then i received my shipping notice. Est. delivery : 31-08/04. I can NOW live with that.

Aye, on Tuesday. :)

Congrats im still waiting on mine although it was recieved at my house, i was at school 1500 miles away. So when it weas recieved it went back out to ship, this time USPS. So i should have it in my hands on Monday finally. Wish FedEx would have rerouted for me. Oh well Apple will get my receipt for $100 shipping from my house to school. Even though this is my first Apple, it won't be my last, even through all the hassles.

Came today at 1:50pm UPS ground. 2 days from Memphis. Was ordered from MacMall. This thing is whisper quiet. I was really worried with all the fan problems I had heard about. It's 10 times quieter than my Daul 800mhz G4.

No problems so far. Setup Assistant seems to have worked great. Had to reinstall Stuffit. That's been it so far.

The only problem I have found so far is Photoshop will only show that I have 1781mb of memory. I have 4GB. I have heard that Photoshop will only use 2GB. I dumped all my Photoshop Application and Perferences and it still only show 1781mb of memory.

Anyone have any ideas?

Photoshop does its own memory management (including VM); this is a holdover from the Mac OS 9/Windows 98 days when the OS' memory management was terrible. I'm pretty certain that as a result of their implementation, they are limited to 2GB.

Also remember to open the "Memory & Image Cache" section of the Photoshop preferences and make sure your settings for "Memory Usage" are correct.

Regarding the post from someone wanting to strip out the RAM included with the G5 and replacing with Crucial's...doesn't Apple buy their RAM from Crucial (Micron)?

That would've been me. As far as what Apple's been putting inside their machines, it seems to vary quite a bit...who knows.

Soon to be ordering a G5 (2.0 or 2.5) soon.

Mine arrived today! .....finally

I first tried the FW migration wizzard, but that sucker is soooo slow. It was moving at around 600KB!/s (migrating 100GB) w/ an estimated time of 3+hours after 30 minutes, so I just went to plan B.... I booted it up and saw that the software was nowhere near as current as my 1.8DP (which I'm passing on to another scientist in the lab), so I just swapped the 160GB drives (both maxtor, same model) and it booted up just fine. I figure this gives me a good perspective on the realtive speed too, since the setup is identical for all the apps. The 2.5 is faster for anything CPU intensive, but not like my move from a dual 1.25 QS G4 to the 1.8DP G5. The hard drive is such a bottleneck, so I'm ordering a raptor for my main drive. I ran the HW test CD, and all systems passed, but the maxed fans were alarming. I mean like two big hairdriers on high. Under nomal loads, its very quiet and semi cool (die temp reads 65C), but when I run Folding@Home from the console it runs louder than my 1.8, and the temp is almost 90C for the top CPU (the bottom unit tends to run 10 degs lower at full load). I heated up a sandwich by putting it behind the box for 10 mins! Like a weak convection oven (I must have missed that in the specs). It's a nice machine, but if it was my coin, I would have been just as happy w/ the 2.0. Most of my work is very math intensive, but were talking a few minutes a day in productivity benefit. Anyway, thats my 1st impression. I guess the 3 month wait jaded me a bit.

Memory in Photoshop

That's where I see the 1781mb of memory available. My Powerbook w/2GB shows 1855mb of memory available.

What is normal?

Does anyone know what the normal opperating temps. for the 2.5 G5 PowerMac are? Can any of the people who got there 2.5 G5's tell me?
http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

Well, not to say this is normal, but this has been my experience so far:

Day 1 - both CPUs at 73 F
Day 2 - jumped up to 83/79 F
stayed there for a while...until
10.3.5 - 127/118 F

The U3 heatsink (the real offender):
at idle is around 149 F
under medium load (UT2k4, audio production, cinebench) around 160-165 F
Highest reading of 197F; don't know what caused that, maybe a fluke

Drive bay never goes outside of 78-88 F

Grab a copy of Hardware Monitor from the same company instead. It's well worth the $9. In addition to the temps, it'll show the fan speeds, voltage, etc. The big one it'll give is the Fan Pulse Width Sensor. Its reading on the Main Logic Board Backside fan is the one that shows the fan revving problem.

Mine usually run in the 130-140 degree range with hitting as high as 170 or so. BTW, you want to watch the Die Temp and not the Ambient.

Apple's order status site says my 2.5 shipped 8/26, but i still dont have a TNT tracking number.
Neone else from europe had this problem?

Rob, if you click the details on your order, doesn't it mention a number which brings you to the tnt-tracker system? If the problem is that the number shows no details yet on the tnt-system, even when it says the number is not known, than you'll be fine, it takes a while for tnt to pick the package up in its system. don't worry, you'll be fine!

congrats!

It takes me to applestore.bridge-point.com, but that page lists only the apple tracking number, not the tnt tracking number.
My 23" display had a tnt tracking number only a few hours after i got the shipping mail from apple.
Guess i'll have to wait till at least tuesday :(

tuesday is not far away now isn't it :)

btw, how's your display doing? I read you had some problems with it? Does yours suffer from a bit pinkish tint?

No pinkish tint, and no dead pixels.
Got a 2nd display yesterday, which had contrast problems at the left and right edges of the screen , but no so bad as the 1st one.
From what i've read in the apple support forums it seems most new 23" HD displays to have this problem.
I'm not sure what i'm gonna do.

If i wuold have contrast problems, i'd ask for a replacement, until I have a good one, 2500€ is a lot of money for a screen that's not what it is supposed to be

Hi Rob,

my G5 was delivered on friday (shipment e-mail came on monday) but all the time my tnt-tracking number information didn't change (the Netherlands). So it is of no use to follow the tracking information. You will be caught by surprise by the delivery man/woman :D

I think I am going to Win

Well ordered the day they were released, extra 512 of ram and Bluetooth and am being told September 15th ..

I must be the last to get one ...

I feel honoured.

What did you different between Day 1 & Day 2? When you mentioned the difference in temperature after 10.3.5, are you saying the the 2.5 is shipping wit 10.3.4?
