If i wuold have contrast problems, i'd ask for a replacement, until I have a good one, 2500€ is a lot of money for a screen that's not what it is supposed to be

Hey, Klaus. You're getting pretty close to getting an avatar there... ;)

My G5 shipped with 10.3.4 and I upgrade to 10.3.5.

My processor temps are about 70 C or 150F more or less when idle, that seems kinda high for a processor, but I guess these 2.5 G5s run hot like that.

Also, my system profiler used to say "number of cpu's" 2, now after a reset it says 1. It seems im only running on 1 processor. I think my 2nd processor has died on me. I'm about to bring my machine to my local apple store to get checked up and repaired if necessary. I will post back later when I come back. Not to scare any 2.5 G5 owners or future owners, but maybe I just got a bad Machine. Anyone else hear about these kinds of problems? And, for any current 2.5 G5 owners, how are your 2.5 G5's running?

I received my Dual 2.5 GHz G5 on 8/12 and have been running it 24/7 since then. I've also been monitoring my CPU and other temperatures since then (first with the free Temperature Monitor and now with the (registered) $10 shareware Hardware Monitor. Both of these excellent utilities are written by Marcel Bresink, who has also given us the tremendous TinkerTool utility!

My CPU temperature has been very consistent: around 115-125°F (Proc. card ambient)/125-135°F (CPU die) when "idling" (around 5-10% CPU load with an ambient temperature of 75-85°F) or around 120-125°F (Proc. card ambient)/150-160°F (CPU die) with a heavy CPU load (80-100%).

Nsx123: I think you probably had a fan or other cooling system failure early on, and this killed CPU1. I'd backup SOON, as CPU0 will probably fail soon as well. I'd send it to Apple to get fixed ASAP...

It has arrived.

Moving up from my old G3 450 is quite the jump. That, and a new 20" Cinema Display. Now to copy stuff over from my G3 (not firewire target mode enabled) and teach myself Final Cut.

My wife wouldn't take a picture of the FedEx guy delivering my new dual 2.5, but here is it's final resting place...

OSX Firewire Migration

Tomorrow I'll finally be able to set up my 2.5DG5 and I need to move Apps and Data from my iMac 700. Are there any negatives to using the firewire transfer versus reinstalling Apps and moving data over my network?

This forum has been extremely helpful, BTW :)

It's here! , almost

Just received the email saying my 2.5 was shipped on the 26th. I tracked the package and it's in my home town right this second. I called Fedex and they are telling me that it's at the airport and in storage until Sunday night and will be dilevered Monday.

This is killing me, but I guess I could start backing up.

temperature

Main Logic Board Backside 85.1 deg F
CPU A Die Temperature 142.6 deg F
Processor Card A Ambient 89.6 deg F
CPU B Die Temperature 136.3 deg F
Processor Card B Ambient 90.0 deg F
Drive Bay 88.7 deg F
Memory Controller Heatsink 157.1 deg F

I think it is strange that there is 6 deg differance in Die temperature.

Hi invalpsion, long time no see ;) About the number of posts, I don't know what's the deal with the avatars, at least the number you need to reach, frankly, i'm not that interested in an avatar, unless I can put my g5 in that picture, but I guess that will take a while

Until I get him, I may be the most frequent poster on this thread, I even may have to start talking to myself for a while. no, scrap that, i'll be talking to my fellow belgians who are also waiting for their machine :D

take care guys!

thinksecret reports on g5 delays

Well, thinksecret has an article up on the imac G5 and some things about the g5 delays

Thinksecret said:
Separately, Power Mac G5 2.5GHz shipments continue to fall far short of demand. New orders are not expected to ship until late September or early October. Additionally, shipment for new orders of the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL video card, required to drive Apple's 30-inch Cinema HD Display, have been pushed back to late October, although the display is still set to ship in mid-September

I guess some of us are in for a longer wait.. I hope the imac is worth it to be so consuming on the g5 processors :)

23" Display Test!

I managed to spirit my dad's laptop away from him and bring it over to my mom's house.

:D No pink tint.
:D No dead pixels.
:D No contrast / brightness anomalies.
:( No G5 to use it with yet.

This display is amazing.
Apple, please send me my G5.

Now i need to drive my dad's laptop back and the display must once again lie dormant...

Couple of questions before I buy

I have been eyeing to buy a mac G-5 since they came out, but I was dirt poor. Now I have saved up enough money, but would like to ask a few of the little questions that I think I know the answer to, but want to make sure before I buy. (All questions are simple ones. I already answered all the tough ones such as "Which one do I get, 1.8 or 2 or 2.5?")

(I will be ordering from apple.com)

1) If I get the educational discount, is it like just buying it regular? Such as it doesn't run an education version of certain softwares that you order etc... Bottom line is it the same computer. (Paranoid about this and just need my mind at rest)

2) Because of my age, the credit companies have given me such a low limit. If I order in my name, but use someone else's credit card.(if that is even possible) Will that effect the educational discount or have any other effect that you may know about?

3) Last (at least for now) is when does apple charge the credit card? Do they charge as soon as the order is placed or when it ships? (Need to triple check since it wouldn't be my credit card)

Any other advice you can give might be helpful.

The computer I have settled with:
G5 2.5
1gb ram
250 HD
ATI Radeon 9800 XT w/256MB DDR SDRAM
Superdrive

Hi tonicardo, glad to hear you are about to purchase a g5, let me try and answer your questions:

1) Your computer will be the same as ours, no educational software or anything, the software is fully the same.

2) I'm not sure apple will be to happy about that one, but then again, if you (for example) would use your stepdad's credit card to pay for it, they shouldn't make a big fuss about it.

3) All companies are not allowed to charge money on a credit card until the unit is shipped to the customer. end of story :)

congrats, and good luck!

You, me , and Klaus will get our systems the day before the $2799 dual 3 ghz is announced.

What makes me laugh and I am passed being upset is that my reseller, I'm in the US by the way, casually mentions that they have been getting 2-3 a week in for the past month or so ...

<sarcasm start) Boy am I glad i ordered a CTO model <sarcasm end>

Oh well just a few more weeks to go ....

I'll add my congrats to Klaus's, and back him up that's he's pretty much right on the money. The only additional thing I'll add is that the cardinal rule is never, NEVER buy extra RAM from Apple. Go with the minimum you can, and expand your RAM via a third party company such as Crucial - it is significantly cheaper. I would honestly just get the minimum 2x256 MB stock and go from there - pick up a couple 512 sticks and then presto, you have 1.5 GB of RAM and your machine will fly. Unless you're planning on maxing out to 8 GB right away, (which I'm assuming you're not!), this is the best course of action for you and your credit card.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy...
Just got the shipping notification for my Dual 2.5 edu order! :D

For those of you who got the shipping upgrade to overnight, how long after the e-mail did it take for you to get your system?

I'm hoping that, if it ships today, I might have it by Monday...
No matter, I was starting to get worried that my 8/30 ship date was about to get pushed back for a 3rd time!

Thanks to all on this board for giving me something else to do than call Apple every day asking where my computer was.
Misery DOES love company!

Great chair! - what car is that out of, and did you build it yourself?

Can I hear an Amen?

My order shipped today (originally 6/9, upgraded to 6800 the day it was announced, pushed back to 9/3 along with everyone else). Could not have come at a better time as I had a beyond-cruddy week culminating with a flooded basement this morning. New baby should be here Monday.

Is this with the 6800?? Or did you go the radeon 9600 route, and take the 6800 later?

This should work out if you have them ship it to the credit card holders address. I had to do this with my powerbook. It was under my name, but shipped to my step dads house with his credit card.

Just the 9600 - no 6800 shipping (yet). Sorry for any palpitations I may have caused.

Amen!

Same happened to me today!! My 2.5 G5 is on the way as of today. I too had a 6800, which was later split out as a different order. Too bad I'm leaving town for a week next Saturday. I just hope it arrives before I leave!

I picked up another Dual 2.5 the other Day and Fan Noise is is almost absent. The Previous Dual 2.5 has Fan Reving Issues. I wonder if I got the Bad first Batch first and then got the new one from a newer Good Batch.

Anyways the Newer One is running very Quiet now.

I think it is strange that there is 6 deg differance in Die temperature.

Here's my temps:

Main Logic Board Backside 100.0 deg F
CPU A Die Temperature 135.3 deg F
Processor Card A Ambient 103.5 deg F
CPU B Die Temperature 130.5 deg F
Processor Card B Ambient 100.0 deg F
Drive Bay 86.9 deg F
Memory Controller Heatsink 153.5 deg F

I thought it odd that there was such a difference in Die temp as well.

I'm experiencing the fan(s) revving up every once in a while as are some other people. I've updated all the software (10.3.5, etc.).

It's a little annoying, but I'm still amazed at how fast this thing is, compared to my old B&W G3/400 (upgraded to a G4/500)!!! PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign are just so snappy and smooth!!
