I've been reading about quite a bit of errors with the dual 2.5's....

Just to give people some hope, I received mine on Wednesday the 25th and it is nothing less than utter perfection. Even with my ear up to the case the fans are *whisper* quiet.

Good luck with all of yours gents.... you definitely won't regret your purchase.

I agree with you iatemyslipmat. Good to have someone post a positive comments. Like anything else those that are having problems are more like to post at least that is what I want to believe. So that just is giving a wrong impression. Apple is a good company and it will correct problems.

It is from a 2000 Chevy/GMC Full Size Pickup. Leather. 16 Way power. Heated. 2 Position Memory. Power Lumbar. I have to run it from a battery underneath and hook it up to a trickle charger as needed. Oh yeah, and integrated seat belt!

As a mechanical engineer, I am just as much a geek with mechanical things as with computers. Built it myself. I used to work for GM on the development of that truck. I "don't know" how it came into my possession ;)

Well - its fab! - the remaining seat belt is a nice touch! ;)

Tracking info has just been added. Apparently, it actually shipped the 27th, and is supposed to arrive...tomorrow!

Hey all,

Just a note to those receiving their orders soon. Be weary of updating to 10.3.5 right away as my install failed at about 70% and I had to do an archive and install of the original 10.3.4 (the DVDs that came with it). Everything else upgraded fine.

Sorry peeps are having dead machines, that really sucks! I was paranoid that would happen to me. Glad it didn't, but it's still disheartening to hear that it happened to others.

I believe that the registered version of "Hardware Monitor" will tell you cooling-pump rotation information. Just an FYI to the guy that was having overheating spikes and wanted to know what the cooling system was doing. I'm going to be registering my copy soon but haven't yet so I can't tell you for sure. The docs for it will tell you, though.

Actually, my situation significantly improved afetr doing an archieve install. I was having excessive fan rev distraction. I had had an incident in the past (before I migrated to my G5) where my home directory was corrupted. After the migration, I had problems with Adobe Acrobat which wouldn't install correctly. My problem was finally solved when I did an archieve install. As a fringe benefit I noticed the fan revs died down to most notably doing un-stuffs, and Photoshop operations such as crops.

This is not to say I am out of the proverbial woods. I still think Apple has cooling problems. I feel a hot blast of air out the back when doing crops and un-stuffs. These are things I didn't notice with my G4. I would think a G5 1.8 or 2.0 also doesn't do this. Am I right?

Scandalous

I wrote above about how my sleepy G5 was regarded DOA by Apple, and that the only odd part was that a company called AMSYS were to call me and arrange pickup for a replacement (which I verified no less that 3 times from the Apple Rep - REPLACEMENT. Not repair.) Well, being the untrusting, nervous twitchy type, I looked up AMSYS. They turn out to be UKs largest Authorised Apple Repair centre. Well thats not good, but while Im twitchy, I also like to think that people tell me the truth (some call it gullible, I prefer 'faith in humanity') so I waited till this morning and gave Apple Customer Services a call at the Apple Store number (the 0800 one).

The lady here tells me that it is due to be picked up for repair in the following days. Lied to. Blatantly. Well, as it happens its worth keeping a little faith in people because sometimes someone genuinely willing to help swings by and saves the day. This lady understood my frustration, sorted out a new replacement, gave me an honest delivery estimate (about 4-5 weeks) and arranged with TNT not to pick my existing sleepy G5 up until I receive my new one.

So even though this G5 suffers with narcolepsy, it still works, and most importantly when it does go down you havent lost every unsaved thing.

Cheers

Almost september

Well, 2 days until september, and their "shipping in july" statement hasn't come through for a lot of us, hopefully it won't be "shipping in october", like the nvidia 6800.

Maybe they will mention something about the g5 delays at the keynote, as in when all the issues should be resolved, cause IBM must be under huge pressure to meet demand, and they have yet to solve their issues.. but hopefully it won't take any longer, so they can keep up with iMac demand, as it will be big I think.

damn, should of bought some shares when I thought about it a couple of weeks ago. oh well :)

Bad News

Warning – spoilers ahead
Well folks, had my new 2.5 for less than 6 days and it gave up to ghost. The first symptom was a progressive gray screen with a message in several languages that I had to restart the machine.
After the restart all seemed well but then the bugger froze. Had no choice but to turn it off with the power switch. It would not restart. Even the power light will not stay on, fans run, tosh link glows but nada. Called Apple and they said push the PMU switch once. Well that didn’t help. FedEx picks it up today and apple says they’ll send me a replacement.
So guys – He’s b-a-c-k. Apparently I’ll be back on the waiting list and have no ship date. DAMN
It was beautiful while it lasted. DAMN :(

Has anyone from the New York area done ground shipping? I'm in Connecticut and mine left fedex at 3:00 AM on the 26th. I was just wondering if anyone knew when and where it would turn up on the east coast as I have had no tracking information since then.

FedEx

Fist-
If it was sent second business day you’ll get it to day. FedEx usually doesn’t update its web site on weekends. If you have a tracking number it will be updated this morning. At least that’s what happened to me.

My order has been on status 'shipped' for 4 days now,but still havent received a tnt tracking number.
Anyone else had this problem?
This company is really starting to piss me off.

Hi Rob,

last monday I got an TNT tracking number, bat that didn't work (also living in Nederland). I didn't got updated for five days and then suddenly my G5 was at my doorstep (friday). I don't think you have to expect anything from a TNT-trackingnumber. Just be patient, it will arrive!

Te G5 is doing just fine! No issues yet... I used the transfer option ( > 80GB) and was able to work on it like on my G4 (only a little bit faster :D ) Very smooth transition. The only software issue was stuffit wich had to be reinstalled. But it's a really quiet box!
Some applications/actions will rev up the fans, but only for a few seconds.
Just enjoying it!!! Hold on, yours will arrive too very soon I'm sure!

It Here!!!

Sorry Guys no pics & I wont be able to even set it up til this evening, but I'm afraid the anticipation might drive me insane!
I've never been nervous about any Apple purchase (because they always just worked Great), but, to go along with all my excitement, there it is.

I'll post impressions later after I've ran hardware tests & completed installations.
Hope everyone else gets theirs very soon :)

G5 2.5DP/2 GB RAM/250 HD/Bluetooth/Applecare

Updates again

Updated again the files. Please tell me if the slash problem is gone. Sorry everyone, I was at my inlaws and everyone wanted to go out. I rushed the upload

DOA

klaus said:
good work tamtam, keep it up :)

Klaus Thanks

BTW I have recorded 5% of the machines that have "arrived" as DOA. Not a great precentage for any company's product.

Hmm, that doa percentage may not say a lot. Considering there are thousands and thousands more outside this board who have received their g5, so I treat this 5% carefully :)

optimism, optimism :p

Regarding the few faulty G5s

I'm not questioning anyone elses decision as everyones situation is different, I'm actually questioning mine. I'm just curious, because mine has to go back, won't even start up, but I went through the thought of why shouldn't I get a replacement rather than having it repaired.

After thinking about it for a while and the obvious delay if I did hold out for a replacement. I'm happy getting mine fixed as it seems this will be the quicker option. This may be a total nonsense question, but I've not been in this position before, I'm not making a wrong decision am I? Surely if I let it go for repair and it comes back a happy chappy then I don't have a problem? (it's such a stupid question I don't even know why I'm asking it  but I got to get it out of my system ;) )

There are no g5's

Ordered my mac from a local reseller, after months of waiting I cancelled the order (I was second order on his list) and placed an updated order with Apple Store UK on 18th Aug. Just visited my reseller, he's been told that NO 2.5's have yet got to England! AND it will be October before he see's any.. He has no emacs-g5's-imacs to sell at all. What a state, an apple store without a mac to sell. He says the reason for the G5 delay is an undisclosed part failure, which needs redesigning.. He hasn't taken me off the order books, and will let me know if he has any G5's before my order with the AppleStore is filled. He also hinted that there may be a new 2.3ghz (fan cooled) at tomorrow's Paris Expo? Seems to me that he's at the end of a long line and has no knowledge of what's going on with apple at all. Seems to me that Apple needs to take a reality pill and just tell people the truth, We have so many orders and it will be X amount of time before you get yours.. My mac runs my business and if I acted like Apple I'd be out of business.
