ok, so my order that shipped ground shipping at 3:00 AM (the time that it left fedex) on the 26th has still not been scanned since then. I would expect it to take 3-4 days to reach the east coast (takes 46 hours non stop from California to Connecticut according to mapquest), but in five hours it will have been 5 days since the last time it was scanned. This is as nerve wracking as the constant shipping delays. It just scares me that when they shipped my display, it left sacramento (the 2.5 was shipped from anaheim) on july 1st and was in new jersey on july 3rd. If that shipped coast to coast in 2 days (ground shipping) then why is it 5 days without word of my computer scanning anywhere?

limbo

My G5 dual 2.5 Ghz story goes like this:

06/25/04: ordered dual 2.5 from Apple US Education Store
1 GB Ram (2x512)
ATI 9600
160 GB
Bluetooth w/ wireless keyboard & mouse
no modem
AppleCare
23" cinema display
standard shipping
delivery was scheduled for on or before 07/30/04

07/29/04 Apple sent an email advising a new ship date of 08/20/04

07/31/04 Apple granted my request for compensation. They offered $50. I
said okay. In the same phone conversation, I changed my
graphics card to an ATI 9800 after confirming that the change
would not adversely affect my ship date.

08/20/04 Apple sent an email advising a new ship date of 08/30/04 and
asked that I contact them to confirm that I want to keep my
order.

08/23/04 I called to confirm my order and asked (politely) if they could
upgrade my "bestway" shipping to priority overnight. They
said, " Yes, we can do that".

08/30/04 No email from Apple but my order status shows a new ship date
of 09/07/04.

This is fun. I'm going to order a new G5 iMac as soon as they are announced.

Well, this is nice. Supposedly my 2.5 shipped on Saturday, according to Apple, and supposedly Friday according to FedEx. But instead of actually shipping today(or any other day), all I have according to FedEx is:
"Package data transmitted to FedEx; package not in FedEx possession"

So, I dunno guys. It doesn't sound like it shipped by 8/30 to me.

Guess I'll find out later this week.

Sounds like someone saw a new G5 box in the FedEx warehouse and took off with it... Dang china men.. j/k but if it were true, who could blame them?

My G5 shipped by FedEx ground from California to Massachusetts. It shipped from Apple on 8/19, and the tracking data was updated on 8/20 to show it leaving California. The next update wasn't until 8/25 when it reached Connecticut in the evening, and a few hours later was in Mass. It was delivered as scheduled on 8/26. Unfortunately, FedEx Ground doesn't provide the same level of tracking info as the faster services.

Mine did the same, same ship date, same shipping method as well as same arrival in CT. Just remember when they say FedEx ground they mean it. From CA to CT its going to take around 3-4 days to get there. Truck drivers are only allowed to drive for 14 hours a day so it will take a little while to get cross country. And while it is traveling they can't update on the status becuase they can't tell where it exactly is untill it is scanned in the warehouse.

september is gonna be a long wait

this thread is going dead I guess.. with all this iMac news, it's great and beautiful, but that doesn't help us.. it'll be over 3 months until i get mine

All right, so i checked this morning and it's out on a truck for delivery. Apparently, it arrived in NJ on the 28th, but wasn't scanned until the 30th. Funny that with you two it shipped to CT, but I live in CT and it shipped to NJ. Oh well, hopefully the fedex guy will come early today rather than late.

Read all 160 Odd Pages so Far!

Well im one of those who has ordered it god damn late!, bummer i ordered on 12th august and i have just phoned up and theyhave said that they will be getting there first batch from the company i have ordered it from (Computer Warehouse UK) in 2 weeks time, for some unknown reason i am in the first batch! weird! would of thought there would be a back order for these machines, i hope i dont get as fustrated as half of you because this happened to me the year i was waiting on the 17 inch powerbook to arrive, funny though! some guy took a picture of the delivery van on its way to his house lmao!! :)

5% Failure Rate

I just want to say... not to rain on anyone's parade, but I think this figure is startling. This thread encompasses I believe a fairly random sampling of new G5 owners. If out of our little group, the same similar problems are emerging, I find it alarming. As I said before, my machine seems to be great so far. I've had a hard crash, but so far it seems software related (user error, as I unwittingly deleted some crucial copy-protection files). Once I reinstalled, the issues seem to have gone away. Of course, I haven't logged many actual working hours on it, but a large task I've embarked upon (converting thousands of AAC files to high-bitrate MP3s using LAME) is moving along at blazing speed. It's incomparable to doing the task on my PowerBook. The machine is finishing in 1/2 hour what took the PowerBook 8 hours. So far so good. Still, I'm very wary, and keen to keep an eye on things. I did not use the system migration tool, due to skepticism. I figured it'd be better to just install things fresh and minimize any potential for errors.

Here are my Temp Specs. My Processor is set to run at "Highest". OS Version 10.3.5

Die A 172
Die B 176
Memory Controller 169
Logicboard Backside 123.1
Drive Bay 88.7
Room Ambient 75
RAM 2.5 GB
Gfx Card ATI 9600 XT
HDDs 1 250GB Maxtor
CPU Load 60%

Well I woke up today early in the morning to see the new imacs and then look at my order status (I ordered on August 13). I anxiously type in my web order and zip code, knowing today is the day my 30" monitor is to supposedly ship. The order status finally loaded and I looked at the G5 status and I quickly saw the 9/3 date, as usual. However I quickly glanced my eyes on something else. I looked just a little lower to find out that apple had changed the estimated ship date on my 30" monitor from August 31, to OCTOBER 25!!!!!.  I am getting very sick of apple and their bad estimated ship dates. I knew in reality that the monitors weren't going to ship today, but to delay it two more months and have to wait three and a half months from the time I ordered to get something shipped is just sad on Apple's part.

been gone

i've been without computer contact since thursday. I made an attempt at reading the 200+ posts since i was gone and said forget it

Anyways the first thing i did when i got on my cube was check my order status, still not shipped, still says "on or before 9/20." oh well. i guess i can wait another 2 or 3 weeks... i've been waiting since june...

Slick new imacs... allthough their graphics cards blow monkey toes. To me they are worthless with that card, unless all i do is surf the web and read grandma's emails.

edit: typo

It doesn't surprise me those 30" screens are delayed like that. I personally would go with dual 20" or 23" screens, it's easier to organize windows and tools. allthought dual 30"... hmmmmm

I don't think it's the monitor that's holding you up, if you order an nvidia card online, you'll see a 'late october' ETA. So I bet they are keeping the displays in, because they are worthless without the nvidia.

just my 2 cents though

I just called apple's edu store (1-800-800-2775) and she said my g5 is set to ship out next week!!! :D :D :D

This is the best news i've heard yet., hopefully it is true

Thanks for the temp readings.

How are you going about converting your library, and why did you choose LAME MP3s? I'm about to re-rip my collection and am not sure which format to go with. I'd thought about the highest quality AAC because I hear it's a better format, but part of me thinks I should find something like LAME mp3 (since LAME is the best, is it not?) so that it remains in a more "open" format. Thoughts? Why did you go with LAME MP3?

Thanks.

LAME is the best Mp3 encoder.

Please re-rip your songs though.

Trans-coding takes a lot of the quality away.

Apple lossless is cool, if I didn't have to use my 1/2 Terabyte RAID for video I'd do as much as I could with it.

Probably max bitrate LAME Mp3 is the best, forget AAC as it's not really catching on outside of quicktime and iTunes.

I just called MacConnection back this morning to verify my shipping date. It is still 9/17, but they will give me free overnight shipping, so I could have it by the 20th.

Hope there are no more delays. As it is, it is a three month wait!

When I saw the new iMac this AM, I was tempted to change the order and save a couple thou, but then I realized I might not get it before the next year!
;)

Kathy :D :D :D :D :D :D

First post on my G5... absolutely silent so far. The only problem is that it wouldn't transfer from my 400mhz imac. It said that my imac didn't have 10.2 (which it does). Not a big problem since I backed up most of my stuff on my external HD to transfer. One question though, where can i find my saved e-mails from mail.app?

Hah! Sept. 7th for me too and I ordered in June. GREAT!
Right now, I've totally given up hope on it. Come when it comes, I'm not going to check my order status anymore (actually, I've stopped doing this for almost 2 weeks).
Well... this thread is getting awfully quiet as the majority of the people here has already recieved their lovely computers :( . I miss the huge mac community.

You should call Apple again since they have delayed your order again. Maybe they will increase the discount. With do G5's you will have quite a setup.

It arrived !

Well, it finaly arrived today.

G5 2.5 + 23" Display

I have been busy re-installing software and copying work across etc. I decided not to use the transfere assistant. I wanted to re install any software and my work from scratch.

Ok. so far all seems ok. ( except a couple of points ! )

It all looks fantastic. The display is amazing, looks very slick. BUT it did take a little bit of pissing around to de-pink it. I do have a faint yellow smudge down the left hand side and along the top :( It seems to be getting a little better over time, so i will give it a couple of days. If it is still there i will get on the phone to Apple and get a replacment sorted out. I am a designer and just cant put up with any defects in the monitor, why should I ! :)

EDIT >> The yellow smudge it not getting any better. Its all the way down the left and top side ( about 3 or 4 inches deep ) :(

The G5 seems to be working fine so far. The fans kick in now and again and times it is quite loud. The they are never on high speed for more than a few seconds. I have my G4Ti laptop on my desk at the same time which is a noisy bugger ! so i dont really notice it too much. Once you get some music on its no problem.

I ran the hardware test and no problems.

All in all i am happy. A little worried about the display but im sure Apple will change it if i am not happy with it.

I just need to register my Apple Care and then give them a call, see what they say.

Ok. to sum up.

Ordered on 17th July
G5 2.5 + Airport card + UK keyoard + 23" display + Apple care
Shipped on the 23rd August
Arrived in Barcelona today ( 31st August )

oh. any one know what the normal cpu running temps. should be ?
