Just visited my reseller, he's been told that NO 2.5's have yet got to England! AND it will be October before he see's any..

Well, I guess your reseller has to get his facts straight, I think I saw several people here, who got their g5 from their reseller in England. So his statement isn't very accurate.

And my reseller in belgium, was more optimistic about the arrival, he said mid september for the first ones to arrive on his loading dock.

Regarding the few faulty G5s

I'm not questioning anyone elses decision as everyones situation is different, I'm actually questioning mine. I'm just curious, because mine has to go back, won't even start up, but I went through the thought of why shouldn't I get a replacement rather than having it repaired.

After thinking about it for a while and the obvious delay if I did hold out for a replacement. I'm happy getting mine fixed as it seems this will be the quicker option. This may be a total nonsense question, but I've not been in this position before, I'm not making a wrong decision am I? Surely if I let it go for repair and it comes back a happy chappy then I don't have a problem? (it's such a stupid question I don't even know why I'm asking it  but I got to get it out of my system ;) )

That is a very good point, if you do get it replaced that means you still run the risk of getting another DOA box, but if you get it repaired they should be able to determine the issue and resolve it.

It all depends on how much faith you have in the repair service.

Yep, have to agree with Klaus as my G5 from a UK reseller should be here this week.

I know he's wrong... but he's an authorised reseller.. he should have all the facts.. it seems unfair that apple sell to themselves first, then the applestore, then local resellers who have had orders from day one. They are the face of apple, they sell apple everyday. When joe public has enough sense to ask "is there a better way". these are the people with the answers. they should be treated better by apple and given orders fairly.

I agree that it would be better to get it repaired than replaced. Definitely will get it back quicker. I have a lot of faith in the repair service of Apple. They did a good job on my wife's PowerBook.

Fix or replace

I agree everyone’s situation is different. I chose to get a replacement because I made three phone calls to Apple authorized repair shops within 100 miles of my house and nobody had any G5 specific parts. They said they would have to order them and couldn’t even guess when any parts would be available. At least with a replacement I’ll have a date to look forward to and I have the option of picking up one at an Apple brick and mortar store.

yeah.. it all depends on what problem you have.. Sometimes, when it's only one part that broke, a repair is the easiest way. But sometimes you tend to have a monday-machine.. if 2 things get broke in a row, I would want a new one.

Yeah my 23" Cinema took exactly 7 days ground shipping. Thats why anyone who has had their G5 delayed should demand free overnight shipping.

My 23" took exactly 6 days from shipment origin.

The 2.5 G5 shipped on the 28th, arrived in Sacramento yesterday (Aug 29th); hasn't left yet but I too hope I get it in a similar time frame. I'll keep you posted. Ground shipping.

I ordered it July 21st, by the way, with a shipping estimate of Sept. 2.

Thats odd,

My G5 shipped from Ireland straight to me in the UK, not via Venray...

...Then again, mine is screwed; so I'll just shut my mouth.

;)

BTW,

My DOA G5 is due to be replaced............... 4/10/04

Ouch.

I cant help but remember someone earlier in this thread coming up with a new slogan for Apple:

'Apple - Outdated by Delivery'

Still makes me smile...

collection of temp averages

I think we should put together some sort of collection of avg processor die temps (and memory controller heatsink) so we can get a feel if ours is normal. Any suggestions, websites?

My avg die temp is 143F for die A, 145F for die B, and 163F for memory controller heatsink.

In fact, if people will start posting theirs I will start logging the entries in gnumeric (can export to excel) and post the findings when I've gathered a reasonable sampling. Can anyone think of other temperatures we can track? Oh, and room ambient temperature at time of reading (approx). mine is about 75F.

Thanks.

My avg die temp is 132°F for die A, 133°F for die B, and 148°F for memory controller heatsink.

My main logic board backside is at about 118°F and my drive bay is about 89°F. This is with an ambient room temperature of about 81°F, 2.0GB (4x512MB) RAM, ATI Radeon 9800XT, and two internal SATA HDDs (250GB Maxtor 7Y250M0 from Apple and 300GB Maxtor 6B300S0 that I added myself). My CPU load at the time of measurement was about 10% on each CPU.

I think if you track this you should also record ambient room temperature, rough CPU load, and extra internal stuff (extra RAM, HDDs, AGP/PCI cards, etc.) at the time of measurement. I think logging this stuff is a great idea.

You might also want to record the machines OS version, I've heard of people complaining that the G5 runs hotter under 10.3.5, this could either be an attempt by apple to make the machine quieter by increasing the acceptable temp, or it might just be a more accurate reading.

Either way I think thats an important variable

recursivejon: good tip about also recording OS version. Daryl, what's your OS version?

Any more takers? I have a whooping two entries thus far, and one of them is mine! :) Note that these are what I'm looking for:

Die A
Die B
Memory Controller
Logicboard Backside
Drive Bay
Room Ambient
RAM
Gfx Card
HDDs
CPU Load
OS Version

Was your 2.5 G5 a BTO? That is certainly a more acceptable shipping time.

Boy Apple really likes me. Got another email. My G5 DP2.5 that I bought on 6/9/2004 is now delayed to Sept. 7. Hmmm, let's see 7/30/2004 --> 8/20/2004 --> 8/30/2004 --> 9/7/2004. What is this?

It is certainly of great concern. At least Apple is trying very hard to keep you informed. I admire your positive attitude, you are to be commended. Have you called Apple to inquire about the delay?

This doesn't sound too good for my order from july 23, which was and still is scheduled to ship on 9/03. Oh well, I can only hope.

yeah, it was, but i didn't upgrade the video card, and i have a feeling that saved me some time. i added the bluetooth package and an airport extreme card. originally i thought the ship date was ridiculous but after reading this thread i realize that i'm getting off light.

2.5 G5 ordered 7/21, shipped 8/29, should be here in 5 or 6 days, for anyone who didn't see my prev. post

Major suckage, is it a 9800 order?
