On August 19th they told me it was shipping out on August 20th.

Don't get your hopes up.

yeah i probably shouldn't get my hopes up untill i get that magical fed-ex shipping notice.

When i called in the middle of july they said my machine probably wouldn't ship untill the middle of august, even though I had a 7/30 date.

I won't be disapointed if it doesn't ship next week, I will be somewhat upset if it slips past the 20th, it was ordered 6/17 and i've seen orders placed a month or more after mine have shipped :(

Bailing for a new iMac?

I just called MacConnection back this morning to verify my shipping date. It is still 9/17, but they will give me free overnight shipping, so I could have it by the 20th.

Hope there are no more delays. As it is, it is a three month wait!

When I saw the new iMac this AM, I was tempted to change the order and save a couple thou, but then I realized I might not get it before the next year!
;)

Kathy :D :D :D :D :D :D

I am enjoying my G5 2.5 GHz which I wouldn't have been doing had I stayed with MacConnection. I was even later on the list than you so who knows when I would have finally gotten one out of them. October? I bailed and went to an Apple store a couple of weeks ago. The waiting was driving me crazy. Albeit, I paid the price.

The new iMacs are very cool. They still have fans (3 total) though, so the question would be, how quiet are they? They aren't dual processor, 2 GB RAM is max, you are locked into the NVIDIA 5200 graphics card, room for only one drive, but.......the 20" display is thrown in, you can go up to 250 GB on the drive, it is a 1.8 GHz G5, BT is optional. All this in a sleek modern world class package that just sits on your desk. Nice touch with wireless keyboard.

All that said, if you are doing serious things like many people on this thread such as professional graphics, serious sound and video production the benefits of the tower are obvious. If your upper limit is Photoshop it may be a different story.

The new iMacs are very cool! I saw a post where somebody ordered one from the Apple store and the order is actually processing. However, when the orders pile up, which they will, some folks may not see one until late November or early December. I think the new iMac is a home run, especially the 20" model. :)

so like has anyone in Great Britain got one yet, and if so has it been ok coming all the way from ireland or wherever its coming from? think my 17 inch powerbook was made in south california and then stored in ireland i think, but just wondering about the percentage of faults, what seem to be the biggies of faults o these dual beasties at the moment so when i get it we all know what to check for, aprt from the obvious dents etc.

Memory Upgrade to 2.5 G5

When my G5 arrives (if it arrives), I want to upgrade the memory. If I am doing basic video editing and garageband, should I upgrade to 1 gig or 1.5 gigs?

In either case, where should I get my memory?

Thanks so much!

:)

The more memory, the better. I went to 1.5 Gig; the hard disk is still doing some work, but, when using Photoshop or iMovie, this baby really flies (compared to my iMac 700).

Crucial is the memory company that is most recommended by our members. They have a lifetime warranty.

Here in sunny Devon (England) we received our first Dual 2.5Ghz with 9800XT this morning.

This was ordered within 2 hours of announcement on 9th June.

ok, so my order that shipped ground shipping at 3:00 AM (the time that it left fedex) on the 26th has still not been scanned since then. I would expect it to take 3-4 days to reach the east coast (takes 46 hours non stop from California to Connecticut according to mapquest), but in five hours it will have been 5 days since the last time it was scanned. This is as nerve wracking as the constant shipping delays. It just scares me that when they shipped my display, it left sacramento (the 2.5 was shipped from anaheim) on july 1st and was in new jersey on july 3rd. If that shipped coast to coast in 2 days (ground shipping) then why is it 5 days without word of my computer scanning anywhere?

This is unfortunately a drawback to getting ground shipping. I never understood why folks skimp on shipping, especially on something as costly as this... I just wouldn't feel comfortable knowing my machine is getting tossed in a truck driving many miles across state. Seems more succeptable to damage over the duration of the drive... Anyways sometimes the guys are careless and don't scan, and then all of a sudden its at your door! Best thing to do is call... Congrats on your system shipping... :)

From what I've read, there seems to be some dispute over whether a package gets the best treatment with ground shipping or with air shipping.

In my case, I foolishly believed that the original 7/30 date would be approximately correct, and in that case I didn't see a need to pay extra for shipping. What really surprised me was that Apple repeatedly claimed it was impossible to upgrade my shipping after my display had already shippped via ground. They claimed their order processing system simply cannot make a change like that. I've learned my lesson. Next time I order an Apple computer that isn't already shipping along with something else that may ship sooner, I'll get air shipping.

Ours (x3) arrived at our offices in central London at lunchtime on the 12th of August.

But they're still in their boxes awaiting their installation this Friday...

Kathy,

Congratulations! Plus you saved some real money. Let us know how it works out. If you were # 40 on the list I was probably #80. Ordered 7/15.

Best!

Going crazy in the UK

GGGRRRR!

I ordered my dual 2.5 (+4 gig RAM) on 14th july and still waiting.
Something about a component problem delaying shipments to the UK.

I wonder if she's sitting in a warehouse in Ireland right now or still on a boat/plane/train etc?....

Anyone who's got theirs already got anything interesting to report?

Hmm, I'm expecting a package from FedEx and UPS today , I hope they don't duke it out on my driveway :)

*Cues the now famous Mortal Kombat song*

Speaking of that, FedEx just arrived...with my G5!

First post on my G5... absolutely silent so far. The only problem is that it wouldn't transfer from my 400mhz imac. It said that my imac didn't have 10.2 (which it does). Not a big problem since I backed up most of my stuff on my external HD to transfer. One question though, where can i find my saved e-mails from mail.app?

homedir/Library/Mail . Copy the whole dir and be sure to get your .plist from the Preferences folder, too. it holds your account info.

Thanks. Oh, by the way, i have a 9600xt and it ripples. I'm definitely not sending it back though since this seems to be a widespread problem that apple will just do an update to fix.

Updated Spreadsheets

Boy that iMac introduction forum has over 800 post so far. It this rate thay will pass us by on Thursday and they won't ship for a few more weeks.

Well... here they are ready for your use. Keep posting changes to your shipments. I noticed alot of people are posting for the first time and not providing info on their G5 order. I'm tracking:

Order date
Estimated Shipping date
Actual Shipping date
Arrival date

See ya later

No ripples, but two words:

Wind tunnel.

Also it makes weird sounds when scrolling and other misc. tasks.

It is certainly of great concern. At least Apple is trying very hard to keep you informed. I admire your positive attitude, you are to be commended. Have you called Apple to inquire about the delay?

Yeah I called them today to make sure it doesn't get cancelled. I thought I'd ask about a $100 CDN (about $70 US) discount since this was the third delay. She said she couldn't give me that but she could ask someone... she put me on hold for 10 - 15 minutes... she came back on and asked to clarify that I wanted a $100 discount or I was thinking of cancelling. I sheepishly said yes (I didn't really want to cancel - where else was I going to get a G5 DP2.5, but I thought I deserved a discount). She said, okay I change the price of the computer by $100 and put me on hold and then confirmed it.

Recursivejon, yeah its a G5 DP2.5 with Radeon 9800, Bluetooth, and Airport Extreme.

Damn, we can't allow that... we have to keep posting every day and every couple of hours.

My first screen arrived today, so I finally got to hook up my new baby. For some strange reason my other screen is still in the tnt black hole, even though it was shipped on the same day. ??

Anyway - Its perfection.

Sadly, after trying to recover the http://powermacs.plasticated.com website it seems all the data it lost. It's the first time I have ever had a mySQL database crash and loose data... If I was into conspiracies, I would think perhaps I had been hacked by someone in Apple PR. hehe

I have the 9800XT and I have no rippling effect. I installed all the updates on the Apple update app, so now running 10.3.5.

To the people waiting for their machines, hold on in there. I ordered on 28th June, and the machine arrived last Monday. The first 28" screen arrived today, and the other should arrive tomorrow... hopefully.

The screen is just crazy... so huge. I am starting to think x2 23" screens is just totally over the top... but hey, it's been paid for now! ;)

I'd posted the info on the plasticated site, but it sounds like that's kaput. So:

Dual 2.5GHz G5 / 4 GB / 2 x 250GB / BT keyboard + mouse / AE / 6800 Ultra DDL

Ordered 7/21 (received 23" Cinema Display 8/09)
Estimated shipping date 9/2
Received dreaded email today from Apple (I knew it was coming, but it still stung a bit)
New estimated shipping date w /ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/128MB SDRAM card by 9/17 w/ 6800 to arrive by 9/24.

Cheers

Got a tracking number, only problem is that is for a shipment going back to apple. The replacement G5 would have a ship date of October 4. DAMN
4 months from the original order. Has anyone heard any rumors on when the next generation G5 comes out? Maybe I’ll cancel and wait until Apple gets the bugs worked out of the dual 2.5. Hope you guys have better luck than I did. DAMN
:(
