Mine is on the way...
I ordered my 2.5GHz G5-6800 on 28 June and received my offer from Apple on 20 August. I'm to receive my G5 on Friday and the 6800 still shows 9/17 but I'm not holding my breath on that.
As for all you whiners out there complaining about missed ship dates, consider this. You ordered a computer, which WAS NOT IN STOCK. Given that fact and the fact that this is a state-of-the-art machine hot off the presses, cut Apple some slack. They're having trouble estimating ship dates, yes, but would you rather have "your guess is as good as mine" in the scheduled ship column? This is my first Mac I have ordered before it was available and yes, it is tough to wait. However, that's what you sign up for when you want the latest and greatest. This is double-true for those like me ordering the 6800 since that didn't exist either -- at least in reliable production numbers.
I'm not so concerned about when it gets here as I am concerned that it works as advertised when it arrives on Friday. All of the rippling this, speeding fans that, and random sleep reports makes it hard for me to sleep at night.
As for the value of AppleCare? For my iMac FP/800, I got it since it was the first in the generation and I knew it was going to be my primary computer for at least 3 years. I never had to exercise it in 2.5 years. In fact of all the new Apples I have owned (10 or so), the only one I had to take in for repair for my first, an Apple //e. I'm convinced that was a surge that zapped the PS so that doesn't even really count. I have over hundred other used Macs, which still work fine BTW.
For the new G5? Yes, I got it since it covers my 23" Cinema too. I keep thinking I'm due for a problem. Also, this will be my primary desktop setup for at least 3 years and the cooling system makes me a little nervous.
