Just received my 2.5 yesterday from MacMall. I ordered on 7/29. Love the machine so far. This is my first mac ever so I'm new to Mac OS X.

My machine came with 10.3.4 installed. I know that an upgrade to 10.3.5 is available. I was wondering whether I should upgrade since I've read all the problems with sleep mode and fan revs. Mine is working flawlessly at the moment and I don't want to rock the boat. Thanks.

What was your last estimated ship date/

They initially told me 8/6/04. After that, they wouldn't give me a specific date. The best I got out of them was mid-Sept. Then it shows up at the door.

Thanks a million. This is the expert advice that makes this forum great. Only one question though, what type of tape did you used? I'm sorry for the elementary question. :)

Super 33 3M Electrical tape....but any electrical tape will work. Make sure you unplug the computer before installing the card. If the computer wont boot it's because the tape slide off when you installed the card.

Will this card trick work with older G4's? My roommate has a 450mhz sawtooth AGP graphics, and I wonder if it would work in his machine?

Gururafiki...I don't believe it will work in that model. If I remember right the "Sawtooth" models did not have the ADC cards. So there will not be a Logic Board power connection.

It is tricky, you will need to manually bring power to the adc from the powersupply becuase i don't think there is a power slot on the sawtooth for the agp (never been inside one). these instructions may or maynot help.

All of you getting a G5dp2.5 as your first ever Mac, that's one heckuva first ever Mac.

Hate to date myself but I started out with a Macintosh SE dual floppy. Bought a 40 megabyte hard drive at the cost for the computer mail order company I worked at, $400.

Went from there to a Mac IIcx, Power Mac 7500, my current Power Mac G3 (blue and white) to the G5dp2.5, whenever it gets here.

Haha, I started with an SE w/ dual floppies and a 40MB HDD too. From there it was the IIcx, then a Perfoma 6300CD, those of course all belonged to my dad as I was growing up. Then in 98 I got my first machine that was all mine: a 266MHz G3 MT, then was the Blueberry rev. a iBook that i quickly outgrew, when i bought my PowerBook (Pismo). That's held up since.

grrrr where is my 2.5....... *anger*

Thanks!

Well, there has been a good supply of negative news (delays, DOA's, etc) which made for uneasy waiting, so I thought those unfortunate to be still waiting might like to hear some good news. :)
It's Here & It's Awesome. Passed all extended hardware tests & that was the most noise it has ever made. Most of the time it is extremely quiet with the fans coming on only occasionally & not loud. The PC 8' behind me is making more noise than the beauty beside me.
I know everyone on this thread is impatient (many with good cause), but they are worth the wait.
Hope they all come soon!

G5DP/2GB RAM/250GB HD/9600XT/Bluetooth/Applecare*

I started with an se/30 with a 40mb internal hard drive :) got it for free from a universty in 92 becuase the hard drive was dead, replaced it with a 100mb i beleive. i later replaced it with a 1.2gb from a dead powermac :). i used it on and off till 2001 when i got my 733 quicksilver :p i had a 450mhz p2 system during the on and off period, but i used macs at work and at school since the 80's. I also aquired a few older machines during the 90's but never used them, i liked that se/30 too much, i still use it as a print server (ethernet to local talk bridge).

Hey all,

I got my new Dual 2.5 last week, this is my first Mac so I need some advice. This is the first Mac that I've owned so excuse my ignorance!

I know that this thread is about the new Dual 2.5's and my question isn't directly related to this thread but considering how collaborative and active everyone's been on this thread I thought I'd ask.

What's the best way to secure my Mac on the Web? I've switched from Windows so I used to use McAfee Firewall and Anti-virus. I've signed up for .Mac and installed Virux on my new system. I've also enabled the OS X firewall. Is that all I need to do? I'm also behind a router/firewall.

I guess I'm just trying to be cautious with my new Mac. I'd appreciate the input and guidance.

Thanks so much!!

If you installed Virex 7.5, be aware that Apple has recalled it and is advising users to uninstall it and reinstall the older version (7.2, I think...)!

Also, Mac OS X's firewall is superb, but doesn't by default filter outgoing traffic (to alert you to apps that "phone home"). I highly recommend Little Snitch for this!

I still have my SE, IIcx and PM 7500. By the time I retired those computers, their used prices were so low, it wasn't worth the bother selling them.

I paid full price for those computers. Now, I have people calling with old LC IIs and Centris' asking if I want them, free. I could start my own Apple museum. I still think the IIcx was the best case design.

It is here! Got here right on the dot of 12noon. I had a hard time bringing it upstairs. That little critter sure is heavy. Now, I need to get started on the copying from my old computer so I will not be around for a while til I get things set up.

Hope everyone else gets theirs very soon.

A Mac early adopter!

Lets put it this way. I’m over 60. First Mac, 1984. It was 128k, No Hard Drive, 400k single sided floppy at $50.00 for a box of 10. How far things have come in 20 years!

Has anyone who had a delivery with 6800 scheduled for 9/03 whose date has changed to 9/17 for the computer and 9/24 for the card called Apple and gotten a discount or free express shipping? I am going to be calling later and am wondering what to expect. I don't see why the computer is going to take so long to get here because it seems that the 6800 is what is holding it up meaning they should be able to pop a 9600xt in it and ship it out on the original date of 9/03. Well, I guess I will find out a later.

Those were the days!

dmb,

Agreed!

I started working on a Mac Plus but bought my first Mac, the SE dual floppy, during my last semester senior year of college. On October 31, 1987 to be precise. It was a good Halloween!

I kick myself for not buying the Lisa another computer store was trying to offload on me. :)

It was with the Blue and White G3 that I noticed the speed really really open up. Looking forward to that G5 with it's speed. I know it will be worth it. I play with a couple of the G5s we have in a lab here at Penn State to pacify me until mine arrives.

After a couple of calls, I was able to get overnight shipping for the Mac and the card. No luck with a discount (yet), but I haven't given up. I figure I may have got a good two and a half weeks worth of calling time to put in (which may call into question the value of the discount) but I'm gonna give it a shot.

I know that the patient, friendly tactic works best, but does anyone have any specific language that they found to be effective?

LOL they said that your delay email means shipping is imminent?!? That's so wrong. In the past, a last minute delay has meant that, because the cases were individual and isolated. It turns out what was happening was that some people's orders were moved to different factories (or something like that to expedite their build time). This is a round of delay emails everyone with the 30" are getting, not news that your display will be shipping any second now. Of course, with that said, it is very possible that they will beat that date, but I don't think it looks good for you getting it before the end of Sept. Sorry :(

Well, I got the new computer hooked up and it is awesome. However, I had a problem trying to transfer the info from my older computer - a G4. It went almost to the end and said there was a error.

Anyone know what I should do at this point? There are some files that would be hard to reproduce.... Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Otherwise, it set up quickly, and now I am going to attach the printers, scanner and speakers.

I'll keep in touch.

By the way, some mentioned their first computer - well, mine was the old SE with two floppy slots and no hard disk. The G5 is my sixth Mac - never bought anything else after I was hooked in 1984.

Also, I am older than most on these boards - I will be 74 on the 17th. So this is my birthday gift to me!!!!

Kathy :D :D
