PC3200 RAM Latency

numark said:
I don't know what the last three numbers symbolize, but if I remember correctly, the first 2 numbers (30 and 25) symbolize the CAS latency of the chips. The 30 for the Apple OEM RAM has CAS 3.0, whereas the Simpletech RAM has 25, meaning CAS 2.5. Generally, the lower the CAS latency, the faster the RAM performs. However, since all RAM in a system can only run at the greatest latency, everything in your system will run at 3.0.

Thanks, that makes sense. Who'd of thought you can get superior RAM at Costco at competive prices? 🙂

Thanks Labor Day!

Status: Package data transmitted to FedEx; package not in FedEx possession.

WTF? Called Apple, "it shipped, labor day has made it not update, call FedEx."
Called FedEx, "we haven't received it, and can't ship it until we do, sorry."

WTFWTFWTF.
It's 7:57 PM, the day after it supposably "shipped."

Just got this email from Apple

Just called local Apple Store

Interesting news-Just spoke to my local Apple Store and they said have 2.5's in stock to play with only as well as 23-inch displays to see and buy.
They also HAD 2.5's in stock up until last Friday to buy and that more are coming in. They do not have any 30-inch displays to play w/ or look at.

MacConnection does say 7-10 days for a 2.5. MacMall 800-622-6255 says "Call Us" for orders placed for the 2.5 (usually ships in 3~5 weeks). ClubMac says call for availability.(800-217-9153) whereas next to the 23-inch display it says availability is "same day." CompUSA says "SOLD OUT" on their website for 2.5's. Local stores says "coming soon"

Just spoke to another local Apple Store and they actually have (2) 2.5's in stock.

and I just spoke to one more Apple Store and they do not have any 2.5's in stock. The guy I spoke to didn't think they got any 2.5's in, ever, yet.

Does anyone want to give me the $$$ to go get one for them?

What the hell. I ordered on 7/1, the same computer that you have and same 6800 delays.. mine still says 9/14.

Seriously. We are going to have a hostage crisis on our hands.

fedex updated thier shipping page, mine went out today, and will be delivered tomorrow morning...but i dont get it till at least saturday, because its being delivered to my girlfriends house 6 hours away....not that far, but i just dont have gas money...oh the suspense.

Ugh...FedEx still says they just have the information transmitted, nothing about it shipping. But Apple says they can't upgrade my shipping because it's already shipped, which its not! Arg!

My G5 dual 2.5 Ghz story goes like this:

06/25/04: ordered dual 2.5 from Apple US Education Store
1 GB Ram (2x512)
ATI 9600
160 GB
Bluetooth w/ wireless keyboard & mouse
no modem
AppleCare
23" cinema display
standard shipping
delivery was scheduled for on or before 07/30/04

07/29/04 Apple sent an email advising a new ship date of 08/20/04

07/31/04 Apple granted my request for compensation. They offered $50. I
said okay. In the same phone conversation, I changed my
graphics card to an ATI 9800 after confirming that the change
would not adversely affect my ship date.

08/20/04 Apple sent an email advising a new ship date of 08/30/04 and
asked that I contact them to confirm that I want to keep my
order.

08/23/04 I called to confirm my order and asked (politely) if they could
upgrade my "bestway" shipping to priority overnight. They
said, " Yes, we can do that".

08/30/04 No email from Apple but my order status shows a new ship date
of 09/07/04.

09/07/04
7:46 PM - Got another of the now familiar apologetic emails that says the new ship date is 09/14/04
8:55PM - Hold it! Got a new email from Apple that says my order has shipped! I checked the tracking numbers at FedEx and they say that all four packages were picked up from Ranch Cordova, CA at 6:05 PM and are scheduled for overnight delivery here tomorrow.

Does the right hand know what the left is doing at Apple?

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

I don't know how to feel. It shipped and will be here tommorow morning via Priority Overnight. I've been waiting so long, I almost feel doomed to have a DOA computer or the FedEx truck explode at the foot of the driveway.

I feel a Carly Simon tune coming on, "...Anticipation..."

I spoke with some higher ups at the Developer division. They called me up to discuss things, and after some chit chat, they pretty much confirmed that different batches of them are handled in a rather random order- leading to shipping not having much to do with order date.

12 hours and I'll have a G5... hopefully. 🙂

Edit: Hey, one important thing: Should I update to 10.3.5?? I've heard several reports about how it's led to problems on the 2.5s... advice?

ps- 6/11 ADC order, 9600/250/AE/BT Ship dates of 8/2>9/3>9/14 then shipped on the 5th. Apple needs to get their sh*t together.

Dual 2.5's at the Apple Store in South Coast Plaza..

They had 3 available Saturday. Until I see hands-on reviews, I'm waiting. Besides, student developer saves big bucks, even if the wait will be interminable.

Anyone, at all, actually using the machines?

And I ordered the same thing EDU on JUNE 22nd!! and mine says 9/17 for the G5!!!!!!!!

OH MAN

IT SHIPPED!!!! FINALLY!

I ordered 7/16: 1Gb RAM, 250 Gb, BT + Apple Wireless Mouse & Keyboard, FCE preinstalled.

Arrived today, but as I'm at college, I have to wait until this weekend to hold it and caress it...........ahem...

I hope all of your computers ship soon!

I dream of what a 2.5GHz G5 will be like. My current G4 400MHz w/100MHz frontside bus is chugging along. Its pretty amazing it still runs 10.3.5.

Slippery Slope

I've been reading this forum for over a month now - since just after I ordered on July 27th - and with some of the shipping activity recently thought that maybe I would slip in and get my computer since my shipping date was only three days away. Sneaky, sneaky Apple just sent the dreaded email and lo and behold my computer was bumped to Oct. 8th! That's a month after originally promised ( and 9 weeks after my original order ). I did order the GeForce 6800 so who knows - it'll probably be after that.

I ordered a machine with an Airport Extreme Card and Bluetooth Module installed and an upgraded harddrive to 250gigs. An Apple rep called me when I was first configuring my order at the Apple Online Store - saved but hadn't actually finalized it yet -and offered a better price if I was ready to committ. I strung them along for a few weeks but they gave me $ 321 dollars off. ( I also ordered a 23inch Cinema Display and AppleCare. ) When I called today after they bumped my ship date they agreed to credit me some money for the hassle - $80. So I'm up $400 but down a computer. ( This G4 667 Powerbook is really frustrating when I'm editing upwards of 500 photos per event shot)

I don't really have a dilemma since I don't want to give up the savings and miss out on the built-in Bluetooth and upgraded harddrive, but I'm tempted to check out a local Apple retailer ( there are at least three in the SF Bay Area ) and see what they have on hand. But I'll probably just wait, and wait, and wait, along with the rest of you. Stay tuned for the next episode of "As the Apple Turns" 🙂 🙁

Well, congrats to all our regulars from this thread who got a shipping notice! It'll become even quieter now, just us poor souls who ordered in early june, hang in there fellows! 🙄

About the 6800 and 30", seems to me they adjusted their october 25th date to october 8, for the early orders at least. Hope they can make it.

I'll know more tomorrow about the supply of stock configs to resellers in europe. Hopefully they'll come in a few days.

cheers

Hi Klaus,

sorry for my late report, been dealing with a dieing harddisk on another system 😉
i got my 2.5 on monday, and the first thing i noticed when i started it was how noisy it was even when the cpu's were idle.
When i ran xbench, at the moment it started doing the graphics test (xbench opens an extra window and start blitting patterns), some extra fan kicked in and the system became really noisy.
Anyone else have this?
Now i have to say i'm rather sensitive to noise
I'm using silent papst fans & a decent psu in my pc, and it's alot more silent than the 2.5
My system came with a maxtor diamondmax 9 160 gig drive.
Overal performance of the system is excellent, getting xbench scores of 250 with 1 gig mem, 9600XT, and the maxtor drive.

Thx Rob, i'm not so picky about noise, don't know wether i'll place it on my desk or below it. Problem is, I can't put it on a special shelf below my desk, cause it's too high, so it has to sit on the ground, and the cleaning maid, doesn't like that. And secondly, I think she's gonna hit it with the vacuum cleaner and damage it 😱. No can do missy.

I also have a dieing harddisk in my desktop pc. My D: partition is messed up, can't access it anymore using xp, had to boot from a linux live cd to retrieve my data.

Waiting for my mac to arrive, so I can format it, and use it for games or something.
