Klaus - I'd put it under the desk - it's a very quiet machine, and only revs up now and again - even for me during rendering its a lot quieter than the G4 FW800, but when all the fans go.. only heard that when running the hardware test btw, but boy is it loud then!! - like a jet engine - even has a kind of bell harmonic tone to it along with the white noise! 😀

10.3.4 > 10.3.5
I presume everyones came with 10.3.4, and I am wondering how many have upped to 10.3.5 - has it coaused more of the alleged fan noise increase etc? - any thoughts or experience to share?

I am not going to use the setup assistant to copy information from the G4 to the G5 because I want change and I don't want my G5 to be the same computing experience as the G4.
I'll transfer the required information either using my iPod or connecting both computers up together via ethernet, which I don't think requires a crossover cable anymore.

As for quiet - I mean barely audible - a gentle mid pitched hum to let you know its on and something is spinning! - it doesnt rev up much really. I guess I could just about hear it from 5 metres away in the same room (if my room were that long!), but barely. I cant hear it from that distance out in the corridor with the door wide open, and I have fairly acute hearing.
10.3.4>10.3.5 did not increase fan noise. I have it sitting on my desk and don't find the noise an issue at all. Kinda neat how it gently revs up when rendering a video or running a photoshop filter. Scrolling iPhoto also causes a rev (I have about 5000 pix). Haven't had a "jet engine" rev, however 🙂
This machine is such a screamer compared to my iMac 700. iMovie works without any delay and transition rendering is super fast and works in the background without any slowdown of other activity.
Only game I've tried is X-plane and HALO. Again, awesome!

I installed the 10.3.5 update without any problems. I looked around different sites for info & could not find instances of problems with Rev B models. As far as noise. It's is extremely quiet & it is mounted beneath my desk right beside me. I can only here the keys as I'm (Oops!) typing this & the other computer in the room (PC) which is at least 6-8' away.

I'll just face it, a computer is part of my life, not the biggest part, because those are my family, friends and hobbies(soccer), but it IS part of my life, and I feel I have the right to be anxious about this (rather big) purchase 😛
10.3.5 note
Just a note about 10.3.5: Most people on here are saying that they upgraded and had zero problems, but FYI I upgraded to 10.3.5 and the installer crapped out and broke my ability to mount disk images. I had to archive and install off the original DVDs. That fixed everything, back to 10.3.4 now and I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

Anybody else place an early August (8-2) order with a Sept. 15 "on or before" ship date?
The reason I ask is after lurking in this forum for over a month I am inclined to believe that my order will be pushed back. 😡

Yeah, I am very happy go lucky when it comes to this machine. It was a bonus from work for taking on a big project, it's an unexpected "upgrade" to my g4 quicksilver (was upgrading when it reached 5 years old) which means i don't need it like other's on the forum do. I don't bug apple much about it, I call every other week to see what's going on. I was also distracted by moving, applying for grad school, job hunting, and espn nfl 2k5. I still want this thing sooner than latter, mostly because i've been wanting to take on some big projects that would play nicer on the g5 (read: doom 3).

I now know of 3 people in the UK that received their 2.5 G5's last week!!! One guy only ordered his 2 week's ago direct from Apple and he has it already. I ordered 4 on the day announced from a reseller (Company has an account with reseller) and still waiting 🙁

This morning is killing me...
So my G5 should be here any time now, and the waiting is killing me. Like others have said before, the last 24 hours you can't help by run downstairs every time you hear a larger vehicle drive by. What time of day has FedEx delivered most G5's? I have priority overnight, so I figured by 10:30, but now it's 11. 🙂
I should have mentioned before, I ordered my G5 using hte academic site, minus modem, plus 6800, 7/7, est ship date still says 7/14 and 6800 still 7/17. 🙂

CTO with the 6800 (among other things), so I'm expecting mine to be delayed.
I bought it through the Apple Educational Store, so I think I'm going to call them on Monday to see if everything is still going through. If the delay will be more than a couple of days, I'm hoping I can get the same deal as others -- the 9600 for now and then have the 6800 mailed to me later.
Could this get any worse?
FedEx lost the G5 in TN. Apple is working closely with them, and until it's found or confirmed gone they can't ship me a new one.
