Just Ordered Dual 2.5 🙂
hi everyone,
just thought i would put myself into the forum.
i order my g5 on 4 September 2004. here is my configuration:
Dual 2.5, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB, SD, Radeon 9800, Airport Extreme, BT Combo, 40 GB iPod, Klipsch 5.1's, 23" Cinema Display, iSight, and Airport Express.
i am not sure if my being employed by Apple (i work at a retail store 🙂) has sped anything up, but my is scheduled to ship 29 September 2004, with everything else shipping some time this week. it also says that it may ship as late as 13 October 2004. i will keep you guys posted on my status. hopefully the scheduled ship date sticks. good luck for everyone that is still waiting. i hope you guys get 'em quick

Raptor hard drive strategy
Very interesting...
I have my Raptor drive, 2Gb of ram, 23" display, Altex Lansing FX6021 speakers and wireless keyboard & mouse all waiting on my Dual 2.5.
Think I'll give that a try, though I'm not sure I understand it all.

Anyway, I immediately got busy when I brought the G5 home setting up a hard drive strategy, doing some ad work & setting up music apps. Still need to setup all the video, but I wanted to share what I've done so far in case it might interest anyone.
To improve the hard drive throughput bottleneck, I installed a raptor in drive bay 1 and moved the stock 160 to bay 2. Then I separated users from OS & applications. That lets your drives work in tandem with dual throughput on the stock sata controller and gives you EVEN MORE speed for your new G5.
Its MUCH faster than having all your user data/OS/Apps all on one drive, and faster than raid 1 (which is basically the same speed wise.) The drive partitions "mirror" each other via automated backups so that if one internal drive goes down, I can reboot from the "mirrored" internal drive & be fine.
All backups except itunes & iphoto happen internally, daily, and automatically in the background without a keystroke from me. There are no raid 0+1 software setups yet for a G5 and those require 4 drives minimum. And those running raid 0 only have NO backup when (not if...when) they go down.....scary thought.
So this was one way I learned to have speed & redundancy on a budget. This picture explains it all.....enjoy.
And for those still waiting, hang in there. All the time spent waiting will quickly fade away once you've been using your new machine for a week or 2. --E

And last 🙄 , did you use cronjobs or some kind of other app.
ps : i'm fairly new to osx itself, have some knowledge of unix systems. You could see I'm a waiting-for-delivery-switcher for almost 3 months 😀

I was also looking a getting 2 x 36gb 10k raptor drives and raiding them (raid0). What i'm not sure about is if the sata controller on the g5 suports hardware raid or not?

My G5 DP2.5 arrived yesterday by Fedex. I've been busy so no pictures yet. Man, it was worth the wait. Got all my stuff copied from my G4 DP800 in no time at all... unfortunately it copied over Norton Utilities (what it could, it had some problems copying Norton over) which I didn't really want on my G5. I hate Norton. I'll have to find a way to uninstall Norton. It passed the extended hardware test with flying colors. Now I just need to add the 2GB of RAM, register the computer with Apple, and get my iDisk set up.

Yes, those are partitions, which is why the 160 is twice the size. They're color coded according to type of partition. The top of each column represents the outside of the disc with partitions moving farther towards the inside of the disc drive the lower you get in the column.
What I did was a mix of using Netinfo Manager and the terminal to move the users folder to another drive and still have the underlying OS stuff remain intact.

I ordered a Dual 2.5 G5 over 3 months ago from my local mac store, and at that time, they acted like it would be released that month. Now, 3 months and $7,000 later and i still don't have my G5. Every time I call the store i get the same run around. I'm starting to get very frustrated to have to pay interest on a system i don't have. I hope no one else has to deal with the same problem that I have.

Depends of if your income is tied to how fast photoshop or similar scratch disc applications run. If it is, there are plenty of experts on how to speed up photoshop with 15k scsi arrays just for the scratch disc etc etc. If I think I need more speed, I allocate the outer edge of a hard disc in a partition that never gets filled more than 65%. On the graphic I have the video OS on the outer edge of the raptor disc. And for daily use the users folder is on the outer edge of the 160 while the daily OS is the next partition in from the video OS on the raptor. When I video, I'm hoping that the outer edges of the firewire drives will work well for speed. I've been told with the G5 and DV resolution media it should be a piece of cake. Hope that helps. --E

Apple are still telling me that this date is correct. I still can't believe we will see these orders shipped on Monday as we haven't seen a 6800 yet, anywhere. Keep in touch, if you have any news.
We might include our French friend MFX in the group (similar stats).

It's here!
My 2.5 (ADC ordered 7/7 with 6800, minus modem) came this morning. Man is it heavy! Even the FedEx guy remarked about that. It appears to be working just fine. I havn't been able to get it connected to the internet just yet. Currently running the extended hardware test, it's about half way through and now it's cycling all kinds of weird colors and stuff on the screen. Seems "normal" I suppose. 🙂 Good luck to the rest of you, and myself getting that 6800 by the 17th? 🙂

Received my G5 this morning. (Ordered 7/12 from ADC, delayed with 6800, received with 9600XT).
So far it's great. I can actually *run* Unison on large newsgroups (no offense to the guys over at panic, but it was very very slow on my 1.25gHz PowerBook). I've also had a chance to hook up my Logitech 5.1 system via the optical out and it sounds great.
I haven't done anything too intense yet...that will be later when I start playing with Photoshop & Motion.

What did you used for partitioning the drives and how did you named each partition?
Did you do all of this partitioning from the stock 160gb drive that came with your G5?
Sounds like your set up should be the way to go for all creative type work. I'm a graphic designer I'd like to copy what you did. 🙂

One question. Why the 2 seperate OSs for Video and other apps. Does that mean you have to reboot to different partitions depending on what you are doing? I can't imagine that being the case. I just ask because I jump from Flash to Photoshop to FCP to Mail to iTunes like crazy so that wouldn't work. A.D.D. doesnt help the situation much : )
Also, is it possible to hide the backup partitions from the Desktop...It seems like 7 drives on the desktop is obtrusive. 4 would be an improvment. Just wondering.

Have your tried setfile, frome the developer tools? You can make a volume invisible to the GUI (mostly) by typing
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /Volumes/HideMe ( note the capital "V" you have to relaunch the finder to make this effective)
The best part, is that the volume is still mounted and available to the command line and to some applications like Retrospect. More, there is a way to get to them with the goto folder command of the finder...
