euhm dude, I'm sure you have some solid complaints, but they can't be asking for your money unless they shipped your machine. At least, that is how it is here in Europe, I haven't paid one cent for my 2.5 and 23" (and the 23" is sitting in the resellers warehouse from this afternoon, waiting for its companion).

I thought the usa handled this kind of situations the same, no payment unless shipment is confirmed.

about the communication, you are absolutely right, none of the resellers here in belgium even have a clue when the machines are coming, I bet Apple Benelux doesn't have a clue either, only steve I guess

I have in the credit card industry for a number of years as a software developer. Here's how it really works in the U.S. and European zones:

1) You cannot charge a card until you are preparing to ship the product. This definition is a bit fuzzy, but the generally accepted time frame is "a few days" before shipment.

2) What you *can* do is what's called "pre-authorization" or "delayed settlement" - where you authorize the funds to the card, but do not settle the transaction with the acquiring bank. This ties up the balance on the individual's card while you "prepare" the order. When you are prepared to actually ship the product, the prior authorization is voided, and you do a full charge (auth + settlement.)

The problem with 2 is, the cardholder doesn't have the funds during this time. Neither does Apple, but that's not the point. Suppose this is a check card, then what? You are going to tie up $5000 of someone's checking balance while you advance the ship date further and further into the future? With credit cards, it doesn't matter as much. But more and more people are realizing how evil credit cards are, and opt for other (more responsible) methods of payment.

Call me crazy, but it's my money. They really shouldn't even do a pre-authorization until they can give me an accurate ship date - "on or before" just doesn't cut it.

You know...

the worst part is going to be when others start getting their orders, and I am in one of the pools of the "on or before 7/30/04" group that gets bumped back. I think that's going to be kicker for me... It can always be worse... it can always be worse :)

I'll enjoy my time in the "on or before 7/30/04" sunshine while I still have it. ;)

MacMall sent mail stating mid August for my 2.5

I ordered a dual 2.5 from MacMall on 6/28 and just received a note in the mail from them stating my order would be delayed until sometime in mid to late August

I'm in the same boat as most of you.... "waiting for the arrival"
I have a friend that is the Chief IT for a local University here in town and he ordered 25 new 2.5's and he still doesn't know when the shipping date is....

I guess we all just have to hang tight and keep our fingers crossed, and if we happen to get them the 1st week of august, then what's another week compared to all the waiting time we've had to sit still. :D

[me counting the hours untill friday........ ]

Why is it that people insist that Apple is somehow immune to CRM criticism? The simple fact of the matter is they have problems getting new products out the door. I have seen this with 2 of the 3 macs I have owned - first with a 12" PB, then with a 17 only a few months later.

Duff-Man says...I never said Apple couldn't or shouldn't ever be criticized. If they don't ship the computers this week, then I'll be one of the people saying..."get it together, and either ship on time or don't make estimates you can't adhere to." But until they miss that July 30 that a lot of people's orders say and they receive communication from Apple saying there is a delay I think it is not very fair to start complaining....oh yeah!

I did it

I went to my apple dealer and I bought the 2.0. It's just that simple. Cancelled my orderfor the 2.5 buy the 2.0 and drive home with this great machine. The 700 euros saved go in my reserve for the powerbook G5 I am going to buy next year. ;)
It's a rev b 2.0. Runs silent. Works fine.
Definately faster then my G3

For me the waiting as ended.
No regrets. :)

congrats man, i'm only waiting cause i've been waiting for too long, and those few weeks won't make that big of a deal to me, cause I don't really need it tomorrow or something :)

by the way, what country from the benelux are you from and what reseller did you buy from? I'm from belgium myself, but i'm guessing you're from luxemburg?

I wonder how many other people will do the same. dual 2.0 or 2.5 G5s will be faster compared to many people's current machines. €700 savings sounds worth it. People would probably also upgrade/replace their 2.0 and 2.5 around the same time, meaning Apple would ultimately be the loser if that’s the case.

Hey Klaus
We have been on this thread since the beginning, you ordered around teh same time as I did. Yeah I am from luxembourg, luxembourg city as I like to call it.
I bought my mac from Lineheart the only apple importer from luxembourg.
I think that all macs we receive transit trough Belgium. But I forgot to ask if my reseller got the information of delay from an belgium office. I was to excited finally getting to take a machine hom to ask.

When I ordered th 2.5 I knew it was a little over the top but the long wait made me decide to go for the top of the line. Then this wait of another three months just was too much. I will now finish this damn photo projet I am working on in a heart beat and the money earned will be added to my resrve for my laptop. Very symbolic.

I am typing this on my new mac and it feels grant. :D

All the rest of you hang in there, and I know I will be jealous when I see your benchmarks! ;)

They're full of s**t. I just called them. He said maybe next week.

People are obiviously trying to take advantage of the situation by doing stuff like this. They no that computer's aren't out yet, but if they say they have stock, it gets people to call.

Kind of like the resellers saying they'll have them mid-july. Makes people buy.

Variety

Considering how diverse this topic has become I'll mention something on the lighter side, from the perspective of a typical Apple "upgrader" (read: not in too much of a hurry waiting for the dual 2.5 to arrive).

Currently in use is my 2 year old dual 1GHz MDD. I had the computer relegated to one of those under-table steel enclosure boxes surrounded with noise insulation, but in honor of the new G5 arriving my computer arrangement was changed to computer out-of-the-box, and on top of the table.

Now my MDD in that spot, a placeholder, a focus point, on top of the table - - where the G5 will sit.... MAKING ALL THE RACKET MDD'S DO (!!!) [even after the quiet-package provided by Apple was installed]

...but don't fret...picturing the quiet bliss soon to be enjoyed once the MDD is gone on ebay, and the new 2.5 is sitting quietly in all it's efficient glory, on top of my table...made all the more pleasing after enduring a month of MDD!!!!

The wait will soon be over! :)

Arrggg. The wait is some sort of test, I'm certain of it.

Has anyone been compensated for an Apple product that shipped after the Apple estimated ship date?

It would be nice if things are sweetened a little if July 30 comes and goes...

By the way, if someone calls the Apple store about something, ask what the 'accessory kit' is that comes with the 2.5DP is (It's listed on the order checkout as packed with the G5). Maybe it's something cool from Mr. Ives...? Or maybe just some firewire and USB cables? It
s interesting that the 2.0 and 1.8 don't have it.

G5 2.5 GHz PowerMacs on ebay!

I've been watching with dark amusement that several "clever" opportunists have been putting new, sealed in box, factory fresh G5 2.5 GHz PowerMacs up for auction at relatively low prices, even throwing in a 23" monitor. The last ones I saw were based in Australia though they claimed to be worldwide companies that would ship from US addresses. Some hapless sellers soon became unregistered users but some got bids from even more hapless bidders. There is a slew of them offered right now, even as part of deluxe editing systems. Many have substantial bids! One seller even warns prospective bidders of a "Fraud Alert" and not to deal with overseas sellers who will just take your money - Oh Yeah!

I believe the delay will go beyond July 30 due to one or both of the following factors.

1. Problems getting sufficient number of processors from IBM.

2. OS 10.3.5 isn't ready for prime time.

I hope I'm wrong! :)

I hope you're wrong too, because if the problem is with either of your scenarios, they should already know they can't meet the expected ship date of 7/30/04.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned that Apple would conveniently forget to ship via the "2-day Express" that we've been told we're getting. I thought that was just a little too negative, but I talked to Apple Sales a few days ago and was told everything on my order was shipping 2-day Express, and my 20" Cinema Display was shipped yesterday... FedEx GROUND. Yes, the 2-day Express shipping was conveniently forgotten. I'm none too happy about this, because in all likelihood, my CPU will ship the same way.

dunno if anybody already checked Onlinemicro. Dual 2.5 is in stock according to their website. I guess they are just joking...

http://www.onlinemicro.com/ProdDisplay.asp?CatID=2&ProdID=241521&ExportID=6

I also called them just as i'm tiping and the sales rep wouldn't even take my money because he was not sure,,,he told him to call him on monday to see when apple is going to ship 2.5's to them.

I totally trust this sales rep because i bought 2 studio displays from him and he was right on the ball about shipping ,etc.

Seems to me that a select few people and companies have their G5s already...

It would make sense that on 7/30 the select few who were the first to order will see the shipping notice in their email account.

This means me (and some others). :D

Did anyone here beat me?

I ordered my 2.5 on 06/09/2004 at 08:58 AM PST. Did any of you get there before me? I was gonna order mine about a half hour before, but I wasn't sure if I had the room on my Credit Card.
