I ordered my dual 2.5 GHz G5 (with 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, ATI Radeon 9800 XT, and Bluetooth module) at 06:36 AM PST on 06/09/2004!

Well folks, this is interesting.

A few days ago I wrote a complaint letter to Steve Jobs about numerous things unrelated to my G5 order, and yesterday received a call from Corporate Relations as per Mr. Jobs... anyway, after discussing my issue, I asked bout the dual G5's he said that he cannot comment if he knew anything, but he did say this. If Apple KNEW they were going to miss the date of 7/30 they would have updated it. Their policy is to update us as soon as they know of any changes. Now thats not to day that they could have delays before then, but I would imagine that if by now they were planning on missing 7/30 they, Apple, would have a pretty good idea.. i mean they have to be getting boxed by now for proper shipment.

Was he, by chance, selling swampland in Florida as well?

Thinking too much, but its fun.

I ordered the 2.5 and a 23" alum. on the first day announced, & it is scheduled to ship 7/30. However, I too am starting to doubt this ship date. (maybe from reading this thread too much?) If it doesn't ship on time I'm thinking of getting the 1.8DP instead? I plan to have 2 gigs ram, never 8. and no PCIX needs, ATI Radeon 9600 XT & 250HD in ether. I'm not using it professionally, but use photoshop & video software a lot & I'm a general power-user who likes to go fast. The 2.0 seams like the weaker value for me because I think, all out splurge for the fastest, liquid cool'est or save about $900 and still get a serious upgrade to my first Mac, a g4-800 imac lamp. What do you think? What will be the day to day speed difference between a 1.8DP and the 2.5? Don't forget FSB jumps to 1.25mhz from 900mhz. Also, does heat slow a processors performance down? If so, does liquid cooling keep the temps lower then just the fans? How much of a performance asset might this be?

30% faster? 50%? is hard to visualize. So if you used the 1.8 for a day then the 2.5 do you think you would say...

They seam about the same.
It's a little faster.
It's quite a bit faster.
It's a lot faster.

P.S. It is easy to say save the $900 its a lot of money, and it is and should be a lot for anyone. And while that is a definite consideration, this is a very important purchase I have been saving for for over a year. I am willing to spend and willing to wait IF it's going to be worth it.

Thanks

early PST order

wow, that is freakin' early (over here)

Mine was 8:14 PST - not the first but it took a slow commute that morning to whip out the 16 plastic digits of joy - even the delay is worth it - especially since I'm thinking my $500 HP is Soooooooo much nicer then my b.w G3 - OK not nicer but faster (AMD 3200+ 2.2 gig) - so what is a few more weeks to wait - soon XP will only be used until October when the VIrtual PC for the G5 is released.... then it will be a dust collector!

There was a new seed of 10.3.5 tonight.

Hopefully one step closer to 2.5s.

How could they ship in three days if thay need a os ver. that just got re-seeded? lets hope the 2.5 dosn't need it.

Just send my the frik'n thing, I'll hook it up to a chevy big block water pump, run only premium fuel and keep'er under 55 the first 500 miles. everything will be fine.

"Holy crap, What have I done. Oh God...God...."

Actually I was thinking the same thing. My reason for choosing to wait it are...

1. 700 mhz, per chip, is alot. (I'm a little greedy)
2. This will be my last desktop (probablly) and I want to make it last a long time. (Laptops should be fast enough for everything I want to do in 3 years)
3. The last thing I want to upgrade is my CPU. (Not because it's hard, it's just freakin' expensive and I won't have the money later.)

The apple insider article sounded as if 10.3.5 IS required

"Sources have reported that the company's forthcoming dual 2.5 GHz liquid cooled Power Mac G5 computers will require a build of Mac OS X 10.3.5, and were seen running early builds of the system at Apple's developer conference this past June."

(*sniff*)

Could be that the G5s will ship with a beta version of 10.3.5. The actual 10.3.5 will be available days after we receive them...

A possibility... :)

I ordered my 2.5 on 06/09/2004 at 08:58 AM PST. Did any of you get there before me? I was gonna order mine about a half hour before, but I wasn't sure if I had the room on my Credit Card.

RustyM

Rusty, I ordered mine on 6/10/04, but slipped the salesman a fin to put my order ahead of yours. I'll let you know how your G5 runs when I get it. :)

If your story wasn't so fishy I'd slip mine a few gills.

According to Apple's Support site, 10.3.4 is the OS version that comes with the Power Mac G5 (June 2004). There is nothing that states that there is a difference due to processor speed. I hope this is correct and that the 2.5s ship ASAP!

WOW! Great find... hopefully that settles one uncertainty. So I guess the only thing that cold hold these puppies up now is hardware issues.

Retail

Went to my local Apple Store yesterday; the salesguy had no idea when the 2.5s would arrive but he was told "end of July." I then asked him if there was a waiting list at the store for one......he said no! Maybe the fastest way to get one will be to walk into an Apple Store next week (or whenever they actually ship) and just get one out of stock.... I was hoping to get a Bluetooth module, but I suppose I could live without it.
