Just off the phone again, and still no email (like mfx). I am half-tempted to order a new 20" iMac and wait it out for another year until these new models are commonplace and perhaps even priced down.

Then again, the new iMacs are ready for another '3-4 weeks'... 😛

Hey grebo,

My email was in response to an email I sent them, not an official one. Still waiting also. If they don't offer compensation again, I will blow my top. They have set a precedent now.

Sorry bout the delay. I barely see this forum anymore, but have been checking once a day since my post.

I used disk utility to partition and to name. Its right there in the utilities folder in the applications folder.

As far as how do I know what is the outside of the disc? I'm simply guessing that the top of the partition column in disk utility represents the outer part of the platter. Seems contradictory that the top of the column would represent the most inner part of the disc.

I partitioned the raptor with the 160. I then installed OS & Apps on the raptor but left out the things I don't need & also left out iDVD & Garage band because the raptor isn't that big and a lot of space was going to be taken up with the video OS and apps. You can install those separately if you want to from what I understand.
Then I rebooted from the raptor and used setup utility to transfer all of my iBook. After making sure that went OK, I then used disc utility on the raptor to completely wipe the 160 and partition that.

Its very important to figure out your partitioning strategy. I revised mine several times before actually starting to partition, then at least 2 more times after I had already partitioned and installed OS's. So THINK it through a lot & you'll save a lot of time. --E
 
Shipping Theory

Just had a thought. Is it possible that Apple IS shipping in order on a per factory basis? Meaning that the factory in China is shipping in the order THEY received the orders and the California factory is shipping in the order THEY received their orders, but one of the factories is just completely F'n messed up and can't get their orders completed? And instead of Apple moving the earlier orders to another factory that actually has their *hit together, they are just waiting on the original factory to get it done?

Not that this makes ME feel any better..... 🙁

Why have separate OS partition for video?
FCP gurus say to run FCP on its own OS partition with just the OS, FCP & other video apps and little else if you can help it. That way other misc software and user installed stuff doesn't have a chance to conflict with FCP. Troubleshooting that stuff is no fun I guess.

The other half of that setup strategy is speed. Running a small OS install and the video apps on the outside of a partition that is less than 65% full is the best for gaining optimal speed. I'm just doing what I've read over & over researching this setup stuff. One important thing I also read is to leave 3x the space that a DVD will hold on your Video OS boot drive/partition. OSX only lets you use the boot drive as the "scratch" disc for DVD burning. So for me the video partition is 50 gig of the raptor with the OS and apps right there on the outer edge. Looking into the requirements for the apple production, they take up a lot of room. 9gig just for the live type portion of FCP. DVD studio pro wants 20gig of hard drive (probably includes the "scratch disc" area that DVD burning wants. Anyway, I could go on with details but thats the general info.

7 drives on the desktop? I wouldn't want that either. I used finder preferences to have those drives in the left column of the finder window. Since I have 2 monitors side by side, I just keep a finder window open on part of the second window all the time & use expose to pull it up if I cover it. I use the top & the side of the window for navigation of things I flip back and forth on during the day. All my business folders & logic are on the top of the window, and I use the left column for quick access on other misc. stuff. Oh......forgot there's a couple widgets there. A clock & a combined itunes & google widget. What the heck here's a picture.

Why have 7 partitions? I'd rather keep it simpler than that myself. But it looks like its kind of a requirement if I want:
1. Max speed & minimal conflicts when doing video (I'm going raid yet but plan to)
2. If I want to have the users folder separate from OS on my daily OS partition in order to have max speed on my daily use of the computer.
3. If I want automated backups of partitions that happens all internal without having to turn on external drives, and happens in the background on the computer when I choose.

Really this is just my first attempt at doing something like this. But I only like to do stuff like this once. Set it up, tweak it just right, then get to the many other projects I'm buried under. Thanks for the questions gang. Gotta go. --E

Has anyone tried ordering more than one Mac and cancelling the others when the first one ships. Improves the odds a bit. Not much risk as my credit card would only cope with one order. If they happen to coincide in shipping, only one would be authorised.

Is this what the US phrase "playing hardball" is used for?

Sounds more like a "shotgun approach"

Playing Hardball refers to having a stubborn attitude or opinion when debating an issue…. Sometimes people use it as meaning "we're being serious now." because hardball/baseball is a "man's sport" versus softball which is generally characterized as a “woman’s sport” although outside of that it’s generally a more casual game.

No, this is 'playing the field'. Hardball would be requesting a cancellation after delivering an ultimatum: ship my CTO DP 2.5 by monday or else...

When you send an E.Mail how long does ti take them to respond. Mine have been just too long, my last was 8/23/04 with no response.

It takes at least three or four days to get a reply. They don't always respond. Responses usually contradict other responses or telephone converstions. So not much use really!

When they did send me a reply it took almost 2 weeks for the prior to 8/23/04. They said it was due to a high volume of messages. This leaves the question, how can a person get a straight answer?

Thank you Eric for your time, effort and information when you didn't have to. I'll be getting my Raptor drive at about the same time the new G5 will arrive so I can put this strategy to work. Wishing you the best -- I 🙂

The bluetooth module IS inside the G5 PowerMac, what you're looking at is the bluetooth antenae which attaches to a port in the back. The airport antanae, which is the other thing attaches, as well, to a port in the back.
 
Shipping on 09/15?

Due to the rumors of the bump to Oct 8, I called Apple customer service to see what the hell was going on. The rep said my 'puter was still scheduled to ship on the 15th with the 6800 card. When I told him I didn't believe it would happen, he checked with a senior rep...
Sure enough, it won't.
But what he then told me was this: EVERYBODY who has had their order held up by the 6800 will be getting their computers on time with the 9600 instead, even if you ordered in August like me and haven't been bumped. Emails are supposed to be going out to everyone today (still nothing in my Inbox, though).
So it looks like my computer will at least be here on time. But I'm still keeping my fingers crossed...
 
Well, I've been playing around with the G5 and here are my initial reactions:

- It's extremely heavy! And large! My monitor looks teeny next to it 🙂

- I'm getting the ripples (as reported by others!) I'll be interested to see the difference between the 9600 and the 6800 (if I ever receive the 6800....)

- The fans are spiking at weird times? For those of you with a G5, could you check my photo album and let me know if your fans are revving up while viewing them??

- There is a weird, "humming/static" like noise coming from the front fan/speaker (sound not evident in the other fans..)

That seems to be it. Overall, I'm really happy with the machine. It was open when the FedEx guy dropped it off (which scared me - I started looking for any signs of it being a return (??) or tampering. But everything looked new (it shipped from LA, instead of China.. so I thought maybe it could have been a return and Apple was trying to pawn off me 🙂 )

I haven't ran a hardware test. I'm waiting for my GF to arrive, so we can experience that together 🙂

Well...I picked up my new 2.5 yesterday from the Willow Bend Apple Store in Plano, TX, thanks to the wonderful staff there. This, after having ordered stock 2.5 with 250 G HD instead of 160 back on 7/22 (with an est. ship date of 9/2). On 9/2 order status changed to 10/25, and I said "fsck that"--I'm going to put my name on the list at the nearest Apple Store, which is 2 hours drive from my home.

And...one week later, I have a brand-spanking, new 2.5, and I couldn't be happier.

For those waiting, it IS worth the wait. Going from our DP 500 G4 to this is like going from the Wright Flyer to an SR-71!

J79, yes, the fans spool up with each viewing of an individual picture.

This machine is exquisitely made and shouts "this bad boy is ready for some serious business!"

Silly Question

Just curious, why do all you cutting edge dual 2.5 owners put your G5 on top of your desks? Less dust?
