Mine is silent apart from the fan revving every now and again .. but to be honest, I have had PC's for along time, swicthed about 2 years ago .. Even at its loudest which lasts for maybe a second or two it still is quieter than ANY desktop PC i have owned ... that's why PC gamers wear headphones so that can actually hear the game they are playing ..... LOL !

I can't believe I haven't asked this question yet - which desks are you guys planning for use with your G5?

With a 30", I need plenty of depth... So far, the only desk I've found is made by HON and costs $700. And once you add on a keyboard tray and monitor arm it becomes $1300. Expensive considering that my wide angle costs $1,300, my macro will be 1,300 (plus 600 for ringlite), and Printer costs 2,200. So, in comparison, 1,300 for a piece of steel with steel legs and a wood top is a bit steep. Oh, and the desk doesn't pass the "spousal approval test" because it won't cover up the cables as a traditional desk would.

Staples, OfficeMax, OfficeDepot have nothing. Any ideas?

I reused my plan Ikea desks, pretty study and I run all my cables etc through ties and tags at the back. Hold my 23" with lots of room either side (speakers / wireless routers / audio mixer ...), depth is good as well I can get the 23" on the table with keyboard and Music keyboard ... you may want to check that out too.

thanks

I'll take a look at what IKEA offers... Any idea which make/model? If not, I'll probably find a similar one anyway. Thankyou!

I finally got the , Your g5 has shipped notice, on sept.11 of all times. Cool. I will get it on Monday the 13th. Hope others are shipping. My 6800 ultra has not changed ship date (9/17/04). Thats a good thing, since my birthday is on the 18 of september. Happy b-day to me if that thing ships. On the x800 ati card. I'm going to stay with the 6800, just cause it runs open GL apps faster and better, and we all know that apple is open GL and not Direct X....

Looking for a cheap full configurable/expandable desk?

Thanks...

I was going to wait to take a picture of my rig. My desk is STILL a mess. Been too busy working to tidy it up the way I want, but here it is.

I've seen so many small, 1 or 2 level, non-configurable desks posted here, I thought this might present an alternative. http://www.ikea.com search for the jerker desk. The add on swinging shelves are $10 a piece and the desk (without the extra shelf I have) is less than $200. This rig was easily less than 500 for me including shipping. For those interested in more details and links, PM me & I'll dig up the links & later. I'll also put up more detailed pix once I get that mess tidied up.

The metal sides have holes about every 1.5 inches so all the shelves & desk can be bolted to any height. The add on swinging shelves (laptop, controller mixer, monitor speakers, firewire drives, and printer hidden in back on lower right) also bolt on and provide 180degree movement swinging around from front to back. Hard to see that in the picture though.

And if they nuke this inserted image the link is http://www.solo-act.com/documents/desk.jpg

I'll post a high resolution link too for the hell of it.

I see how it could be misinterpreted, but I believe that the Macosrumors hint is that the 6800 will be replaced by the X800 due to problems acquiring the 6800 card.

Can anyone outline the advantages and disadvantages of both cards, if a choice is to be offered? Based off of what's known about the 6800 and X800 platforms...

H@nk here. Still waiting with you guys, as well, Duffman, Klaus and many others.... Ordered June 9th AM. No joy in Mudville. Suppose to ship later next week which means I'd have it middle of the NEXT week. That'd put me at the 3 1/2 month mark. Sounds reasonable, eh? I'll believe it when I see it. I'm placing my bets on another unexplainable delay. You know, like, "Dear Apple Customer, due to overwhelming demand of this product, we decided to ship numerous orders before yours for no apparent reason! We've already shipped you your display, so now you're SOL! Cancellation is no longer an option! Have a nice day! Sincerely, Apple Computer."

Bend me over and say, "this won't hurt a bit." 😱

Good luck next week everyone! I'll check in when possible.

H@nk

Yeah, even though mine is supposed to ship later this week I find myself not too excited. It's a defense mechanism that I have in place in case I get another delay notice. I guess I am a little excited, but it has been so long I cannot tell if getting the G5 is real or not. 😱

After a quick google search I have read that the X800 consumes less power, and has somewhat higher framerates in some games. Although it is an attractive card, it is impossible to tell how it will fare in a mac because of OSX using OpenGL, which is where the 6800 does well. I don't think apple will replace the 6800 with the X800 because the X800 is also in very short supply.

Also, the drivers (which account for at least 10% of the card's performance) are different for OS X.

still waiting since 14th june...

So, after being a 'heavy-reader' of this thread I thought it's time to say hello 🙂 just wanted to inform Klaus about my order date of June 14th (reseller in Switzerland). I don't have any information about a possible shipping date, of course no compensation for this huge delay. it's not stock, because I orderd it with a 250 GB HD, Bluetooth and the 8600 card. Guess I still have to wait.
For those of you who already got yours. Maybe you want to check out the production place and week of your new G5? Try this link (although I obviously don't know if it works with a dual 2.5 G5.... just didn't have one to check this out 🙄

Hard Drive Strategy for G5

Picking up my G5 tomorrow after it was reschedule for delivery 9/14.

Below is my plan for hard drive use as per "solo-act's" recommendation to achieve optimum speeds and redundancy. I hope this helps anyone interested in pursuing such strategy.

I think at this point, for me, I will be more relieved and hopefully pleased with the performance than jumping out of my chair(like I would have been 2 months ago). It will still be kind of exciting, just not what it should have been. 😱

It's Finally Coming

Ordered on June 30th through ADC, delayed from 9/3 to 9/14. I received the shipment email late on 9/11, so I expect it tomorrow. It's going to be a fun week getting it set up for myself and my wife (she switching from XP).

2.5DP, 1 GB, 2x250GB disks, AE, BT, 9600XT, 8xSuperDrive, 20" Alu LCD.

I am definitely not excited anymore... Apple has managed to take me up and down on this emotional rollercoaster for the last 2 1/2 months. At one point I was itching to get this machine, now I have moved on with my life. My only regret about the whole waiting process is that I put so much expectation into receiving this machine. I have purchase countless Mac related magazines, and read you guys reviews here online with more problems to report once you've received them. My next mythical ship date is supposed to be on or before Sept. 14. I could give a good God damn if its coming or not I am scheduled to play a round of golf on that day. And that holds a signigicant amount of weight compared to this machine. If it is delivered oh well I will pick it up later on that day when I get home, hell if I am too tired it can wait til the next day. I guess what I am saying to you all is Apple has taken the luster out of this whole Switch process, and they make it look so simple on TV. I got two words for Apple and their crap... Shove it! Yes I am upset with this process and I have full right to be, there is no excuse for delays such as these. I have never had to wait anywhere near this long for any product I have ever purchased. I have ordered vehicles before they were even on the lot for sale, and received them quicker. And that was a custom build not stock... Geez get it together Apple you guys are a dissapointment...

I would recommend Anthro. They have very sturdy desk that have a lifetime warranty. They are easily customizable. They have a lot of options.

I'm very sorry to hear about your disappointment. Your feelings are very understandable. A very useful mechanism. My hope is that once your G5 arrive and is setup, all the above will be forgotten. Others have commented that in the end the wait was worth the end result. Hope that you will post your experience after arrival and setup.

after waiting for two months i felt like the g5 was not too important anymore, and when i finally got it, a lot of the original excitement was gone. but after getting digital performer up and running and starting to get some real work done on the machine, all i can say is holy crap! i use a pb 12 g4 867Mhz (a great laptop might i add), and while the pb can handle quite a bit of punishment the 2.5 g5 blows the pb away in the pro app dept. what i find even more exciting is how much faster i feel it is than the dual 2.0 g5 i use at my school's recording studio. and despite the fan revving, it is usually extremely quiet. amazing.

A man from Basel!

Just had to say... your town has produced the most godlike tennis player I've seen in my life...! (Roger Federer is his name for the non-tennis fans, he just won his third Grand Slam of this year today by winning our very own US Open. And in winning the final today, he went four for four in Grand Slam finals in his career thus far. ) What an amazing athlete to watch...

Hope you get your G5 soon, it's worth the wait!

I looked into anthro. Their carts wouldn't fit asthetically in the room as they are steel, and the room is mostly cherry wood.

Thanks again for the recommendation though. This search is getting harder... Personally, I'd be happy with any of these options, but there are some people in the house who would have a problem with them, 🙁 .

Betting pool starts now. Will all ppl with a 9/14 ship date actually get their G5s by Wed?

BTO ships in Oz

Much to my amazement, my reseller called me to tell me that my BTO G5 has arrived. He is delivering it this afternoon!

I don't think many BTO G5s have arrived in Australia yet so I'm obviously one of the lucky ones.

I ordered on 16 June, only BTO change is a 9800XT.

More when it arrives.

Good morning from London -- not sure if Glassbathroom and other UK 6800 orders got any notification, but I never heard 'boo' from Apple via email notifying us that the previous ETD of 13 September was not going to be met.

I am curious to know if they'll give us further compensation or one of those ultimatum emails we've seen offered to those in the US (where you have to respond with either a 'yes, I'm happy to wai, and while you're at it, take another month' or 'sod it, and sod you, cancel my order')

Personally, I'm hoping they'll offer further discounting, but what I really want is my damn computer. I've got my new Banco glass and aluminium desk all assembled, and it looks mighty bare without it.

P.S. Thanks to the fellow from Basel with the link -- I found out this machine I'm suffering with at the moment was built in the 13th week of 2000. Had forgotten that this model had supply problems not too dissimilar from what we're dealing with now (AGP Graphics, 500 Mhz)

Grebo

No news here I am afraid, I think they will wait until tomorrow before sending the emails. I really can't see any chance that they will ship with the 6800 from what we know. I am just hoping that they will realise what an inconvenience they are causing and either offer to ship with another card as in the US or compensate.

A bit more money off would satisfy me. I am feeling a little short since ordering. If I know that I am getting a cheaper deal than I would if I cancelled and got it elsewhwere, then that would make the wait easier.

Cheers

Glassbathroom
