Fan rev's when viewing those pics?

Duff-Man said:
Duff-Man says...more nice pics of someone receiving their new toy. I did not notice my fans rev at all while viewing the pics....oh yeah!

My fans rev'ed on each picture. Duffman, you may have a defective machine. 😉

I write this from my new G5...just set it up and was running in 10 minutes, flat. So fast, so quiet. My roommate's PC sounds like an air conditioner.

And he says PC's are better......*shakes head sadly*

Good luck to all who still await theirs!

WOOOOOO!!! Finally!!
My G5 has SHIPPED! Oh, what a night... I come back from a night full of blues and rock to THIS! Man, this really tops it off! 😀 😀

First impressions:

Hi all,

Props to the originators and regulars, including Solo-act, Frinky, Duff-Man, and Klaus, for making the wait more bearable. Z0AC, for that is her name, arrived on Wednesday (Edu order through Apple Store on 7/13 – stock except added BT). Typical Apple experience (including the damn wait): Beautiful out of the box, set up in 5 minutes. 250GB drive, 2 GB RAM, and AP extreme card added in another 5 minutes. Set up BT keyboard and mouse in another couple of minutes. The file transfer from my PowerBook went smoothly – so much easier than spending an evening manually shifting stuff.

Overall noise impression: similar to my old Quicksilver, which is amazing really considering what’s under the hood. Fans tend to rev on increased processor load then back off.

Xbench score: 234.12

Resting:
Main Logic Board Backside 102.0 °F
CPU A Die Temperature 129.4 °F
Processor card A Ambient 108.5 °F
CPU B Die Temperature 124.6 °F
Processor card B Ambient 104.5 °F
Drive Bay 80.6 °F
Memory Controller Heatsink 141.8 °F

Vizualizer Full Screen:
Main Logic Board Backside 102.0 °F
CPU A Die Temperature 172.5 °F
Processor card A Ambient 108.5 °F
CPU B Die Temperature 161.0 °F
Processor card B Ambient 104.5 °F
Drive Bay 80.6 °F
Memory Controller Heatsink 157.3 °F

Very happy – hang in there Klaus!

G5 fan noise (again)

Hi,

I read several reports on G5 dual 2.5 fan noise, setting on and off also at
random times. Isnt that more annoying than a constant fan noise ?

Does anybody know of an official comment by Apple on the noise problem ?
Any improvments expected in forseeable future ?

thanks
PUM

Same with mine, Duffman, I suggest you run hardware tests or better yet ship it to Klaus for addtional hardware testing 🙂

For those still waiting these machines are pure perfection hang in there.. I finally found one at the Short Hills Mall after my local reseller had bumped me for a standard machine to September 30th ... ordered June 9th .....

Klaus, thought it was just me and you left ... now I m sorry its just you ....

Just curious, why do all you cutting edge dual 2.5 owners put your G5 on top of your desks? Less dust?

I would say many do it simply because it is an AWESOME looking machine worth showing off, but dust could be a factor tho' dust can form anywhere.
I went with mounting it under my desk. Close at hand, off the floor & not adding to the clutter on my desk. (G5 DeskMount by Marathon) & I THINK IT STILL LOOKS GREAT however you choose to display it! 😀

Hi Pum: I not sure of any official comment from Apple, but as a user I can tell you from my experience so far (2 wks 24/7) that this machine is extremely quiet & when it does rev up during heavy usage it's very minimal & I don't find it annoying at all.
Room temperature, software issues & faulty hardware could all factor into excessive fan noise. I'm not sure how many people are experiencing these problems, but, I'm extremely pleased with the machine I have. 😛

G5 Use...

jhu said:
i'm curious as to what you people actually use your dual g5 2.5ghz for?

The main use of my G5 is coding. I've developed a cross-platform photo management piece of software ( Album Shaper ) and have looked forward for a while now to upgrading from my 700mhz Dell laptop to a speedy dual G5 2.5. 🙂 Of course now that I have it, I'm also finding myself using it to finally organize all my data (the finder is pretty well designed IMHO after using it quite a bit this morning) and I'm also thinking of playing with the video editing software to stitch together clips I have lingering around on my hard drive. If iPhoto pisses you off, or you want to more easily share your photos with your Windows friends, give Album Shaper a try. 🙂

Sounds like we could have another switcher in the not too distant future. Congratulations on your new G5 and welcome to MacRumors.

I won't have room for it on my desktop because of my freakin' huge 30" monitor! The desk itself is only 34" wide. Going to have to figure out where I'm going to put the speakers so they don't block the view 😉

I opted for a classy desk to complement the new system. A (coke-bottle) green glass & aluminium offering from Rexite called 'Banco'. (The Rexite site is down at the moment, but here's a link to a picture: http://www.aboutstyle.com.au/sub/nova/bancocomputerdesk.htm)

Benelux reseller update (maybe european as well)

Well, the rep from my dealer has contacted Apple. And apparently there were only a handfull of shipments to the benelux, from which most of them went to the Netherlands, and only 1 handful (max 5) to Belgium and Luxemburg.

Apple Benelux is expecting a new shipment around the 20st of september. But my dealer doesn't know if they will be part of that shipment or not. All they can do is hope, so can we.

One thing I know for sure, is that i'll be wanting to open and test my 23" display at the store, before I pay and take it home, cause with all these pink issues around, I won't take any chance!

cheers

ok, the end of september will bring us clarity

Thx for the info Klaus. When they (Apple Belgium) told me september (somewhere half august when I called them), I thought: "Ok, I've been waiting for two moths now, maybe I'll have it within a few weeks". But, september 20th is already the end of september (half september will be past within a few days), and is isn't even for sure...

Today I am already waiting for a whole 3 moths. Thats a full business quarter! if they make it 4 moths, it will be a very significant part of the history of the computer 😱.

In case anyone cares..

Well, I've been playing around with the G5 and here are my initial reactions:

- It's extremely heavy! And large! My monitor looks teeny next to it 🙂

- I'm getting the ripples (as reported by others!) I'll be interested to see the difference between the 9600 and the 6800 (if I ever receive the 6800....)

- The fans are spiking at weird times? For those of you with a G5, could you check my photo album and let me know if your fans are revving up while viewing them??

- There is a weird, "humming/static" like noise coming from the front fan/speaker (sound not evident in the other fans..)

That seems to be it. Overall, I'm really happy with the machine. It was open when the FedEx guy dropped it off (which scared me - I started looking for any signs of it being a return (??) or tampering. But everything looked new (it shipped from LA, instead of China.. so I thought maybe it could have been a return and Apple was trying to pawn off me 🙂 )

I haven't ran a hardware test. I'm waiting for my GF to arrive, so we can experience that together 🙂

Here are my images!
http://homepage.mac.com/jpattishall/PhotoAlbum2.html (again, could you let me know if your fans rev up while viewing the images?)

Thanks to everyone in the forum for their support / stories / pictures. Those of you still waiting, it's frustrating. But, the day it ships and you receive it, will be worth it!

- J

My fans rev up as I watch the pictures, which are great by the way.

I have had mine since 9/1 and most times it is so quiet I have to look at the screen to make sure it is on.

I am getting used to the short fan bursts - guess we will all get used to it. Different from our other macs, but well worth the wait.

I am enjoying Safari and Mail - easy to pick up as I was using IE and OE.

The data came over very easily from my old G4 to the G5 via the fiirewire.

Enjoy your machiine.

Kathy 😀

just drove five hours with my g5 in tow. am running hardware test now, and the thing sounds like its about to take off. after i had registered, i noticed the fans reving when i resized a finder window. i guess im just gonna have to live with that.

ive been waiting since january to have enough money to buy a g5, now i have one, and strangely, i feel empty on the inside....

hope everyone gets theirs soon

Hello

H@nk here. Still waiting with you guys, as well, Duffman, Klaus and many others.... Ordered June 9th AM. No joy in Mudville. Suppose to ship later next week which means I'd have it middle of the NEXT week. That'd put me at the 3 1/2 month mark. Sounds reasonable, eh? I'll believe it when I see it. I'm placing my bets on another unexplainable delay. You know, like, "Dear Apple Customer, due to overwhelming demand of this product, we decided to ship numerous orders before yours for no apparent reason! We've already shipped you your display, so now you're SOL! Cancellation is no longer an option! Have a nice day! Sincerely, Apple Computer."

Bend me over and say, "this won't hurt a bit." 😱

Good luck next week everyone! I'll check in when possible.

H@nk

I can't believe I haven't asked this question yet - which desks are you guys planning for use with your G5?

With a 30", I need plenty of depth... So far, the only desk I've found is made by HON and costs $700. And once you add on a keyboard tray and monitor arm it becomes $1300. Expensive considering that my wide angle costs $1,300, my macro will be 1,300 (plus 600 for ringlite), and Printer costs 2,200. So, in comparison, 1,300 for a piece of steel with steel legs and a wood top is a bit steep. Oh, and the desk doesn't pass the "spousal approval test" because it won't cover up the cables as a traditional desk would.

Staples, OfficeMax, OfficeDepot have nothing. Any ideas?

Thanks... Although it seem's like I'll have plenty of time to make a choice at the current rate, it'd be nice to get this situation squared away before it takes time away from my actual use of the computer.

This will affect some of us, as reported by macosrumors:

"Breaking News nVIDIA's problems with their GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card are apparently behind the delays of Apple's 30-inch displays. Speculation is widespread regarding a Dual-DVI-Link (DDL) card based on ATi's X800 GPU that may hit the Apple BTO options lineup as soon as October...."

I still don't understand why the delay of a graphics card causes a display to be delayed, but, I guess I won't have any use for a display that requires a special gfx card w/o the gfx card.

Let's just hope that these new cards ship in October, not November....

Duff-Man says...heheheh....okay, so I went and looked at the pics again, this time I turned the music off and listened closely...and on *some* of the photos I did hear a slight rev of the fans, but not all of them and not up to full speed....maybe all you others have the defective ones....hahahah.....oh yeah!

Actually the fans just accelerated a little bit - like a small wind sound. Other times it is so quiet! So far, nothing has surpoassed the noise in my old G4 tower!

Kathy 😀

Duff-Man says....no kidding! I powered up my old Quicksilver G4 to clean out the last of the stuff and zero the drive before getting rid of it and was amazed at how much louder it was than the G5....oh yeah!

Sources Accuse Duffman of Modifying Cooling System!

MacRumours says....Duffman has not been completely honest here. Reliable affiliate Canadian agents have informed MacRumours that Duffman replaced the coolant in his G5 system with a mixture of glycol and pre-chilled Duff beer minutes before the test thus skewing the curve of other respondents......oh yeah!

I would hate to think Duffman is the only one out there with an unmodified machine that is actually indeed whisper quiet (all the time) while the rest of us wallow in these occassional fan revs, albeit not the end of the world. I hear the G5 2.0's are even noiser if that helps.

I suspect Apple may refine the fan cycles with 10.3.6 or so, if they can. The real culprit appears to be the memory controller heatsink. Until then, Duffman, please be so kind as to post your temperature monitor stats whilst browsing the photos. You may have that one machine out of a 100 that is nearly perfect, much like some cars that come off the assembly line from time to time. 😀
