I'm really really pissed with apple right now.. Although I am a huge fan of their machines, their delivery policy sucks bigtime...

Idem dito, i'm thinking of ordering one online, and cancel the other one. But on the other hand, the resellers could use the little profit they make on the machines, and I got a better price than online

I think if I cancel it now, I have to wait even longer.

It really leaves me with a nasty feeling. Not cool to order a computer these days..

I'll call applebenelux once again this thursday. Then she knows more about delivery's next week.

At this moment, I don't bother about the nvidia card. Just gimme the machine! I need it very hard right now.

I also feel for all those who ordered a 30" display along with their powermac. they are in the same boat.. maybe even worse. The 6800 chips are apparantly very difficult to make... as the G5...

Weird thing.. they are both made by IBM! nvidia doesn't make chips, it designs them..

Who was cheering back then when Apple choose IBM instead of motorola with the G5.. And a bright future we had.. until....

Quick update if anyone is still interested in my UK 6800 order story.

My order has been cancelled and reordered with the 6800 separate. The G5 (with 9600) is ship by 24th September. The 6800 is ship by 15th October.

And they said that this wasn't possible in Europe.

This has cheered me up no end as my order still had a ship date of 24th August, this morning. I hope others manage to get the same deal. 🙂

I just cracked.

I just couldn't wait any longer so I have just asked Apple to put a 9600 in and ship. After waiting since the 10th June and having just been pushed back to the 15th October with no guarantee that it won't get pushed back to the 15th November, I decided to bring the matter to a head.

Hmm Danhaupt, that's another 2 months, but I wouldn't worry too much about that date, cause it was often the case someone got bumped waaay ahead, to get their shipping notice in the days after that. So don't worry, it will not take that long

24th Sept is now the day...

I'd been thinking of trying this myself, and your thread made my mind up! 🙂
My order is now shipping (hopefully) on 24th Sept with a 9600XT,with the 6800 Ultra to follow after on 15th Oct.
However,I wasn't issued a new order number, and the Apple rep. did assure me the cost would remain the same(this was after I reminded him of the £150 discount already applied),so hopefully we may end up eventually with a spare 9600XT to sell on eBay! 😛
Wonder how much it might sell for...? 🙄

We'll see. To me it is more evidence that mass shipments, even with the 9600 card, are still a ways off. I wonder if the inability to predict when these machines will be built is due only to supply problems, or if Apple's order monitoring system is not sophisticated enough to track when individual components will arrive in the assembly room?

Did you have to pay extra for this?

klaus --> We ordered two standard machines, we bought our memory expansion seperate from the machine. So there could be no hold up from that. The guy I spoke didn't specifically say they would be in stock or delivered to the customer, but it only differs a day I guess. He said they then have enough to satisfy all the backorders and more. So maybe the 20th september shipment would be very nice, but I'm not hoping anymore. 😉

Weird stuff guys..

The lady with Apple Benelux goes over all the shipping units in Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands..

She only knows thursday how many units will be shipped next week (20th sept.)

so, I find it weird that if even Apple benelux headoffice doesn't know it until thursday, how can anyone else know it?

It have been a weird 3 months, if you ask me 🙂
Is she handling both reseller and online customer shippings? Does she have any kind of explanation about this shipping fiasco, or why stock configs aren't shipping, but bto orders do? I'd like to know that, cause I can't find a logical explanation than explicitly holding them back.

Could you ask her on thursday?

thx

No same price. The G5 is cheaper and then they are charging me £288 for the 6800. Which is the cost of upgrade only, so it works out exactly the same price.

Cheers

Sell the 9600 Card - extra discount

AND you can sell the 9600XT card to everyone who did not buy a 2.5 G5!!!

Sure beats the 5200 cards they got.

A further discount!

So far so good - Still 9/14

I JUST CHECKED AND THEY UPDATED MY CARD TO 10/15 which means they updated my account and the computer is still schedulked for today 9/14... and as best I can tell both dates are STILL in the year 2004!

No tracking number yet so I'm still going to assume the worst... on or before 12/25/2004 personally delivered by Santa and Set up by the Easter Bunny!

Dark Side

Proof that Microsoft is a gateway to the Darkside - I doubt even Yoda could save him form the path he has chosen to follow.

Be Irie and patient, two good virtues! And I ask you, what hero was one of the biggest whinners of all time?... yup, Luke Skywalker himself - whinned all the way through Episode IV - and look what good became of that effort..... 😛

Whinning has its place in the universe - two bad people like you don't! Go away. 😱

upgrade...

I just spoke with Apple on the phone. My G5 shipped to me on 9/9 (ordered 7/7, original est ship date on or before 8/31) without hte 6800 but with the 9600 we all love. 🙂 I ordered the 6800 because, unlike most people on this thread that either a.) want to play games at wicked framerates or b.) actually have the money for yet-to-be-shipped 30" displays, I intend to use my G5 for vertex and pixel shader coding. Without the 6800 I can't start using the GPU functionality I want because the 9600 just does not provide it.

So, I called Apple, since my 6800 was bumped to 10/15 (ugh!) and kindly asked him to keep the order, but would it be possible to give me some sort of discount or slip in one of those little Apple Extreme cards. 🙂 The plan worked and I now have an Apple Extreme (street value: $80 + tax) card that will be shippped presumable overnight on or before 9/28.

Here is what I think. It doesn't cost Apple $3000 to produce my G5 system, or $400 to buy and ship one of those 6800's, and it DEFINATELY doesn't cost them $80 to send me an Apple Extreme card. We all know Apple marks up it's prices a bit, but we love them for designing great products (I love my G5, I love OSX, I'm learning to "love" XCode). Ask for a discount and you may or may not get it. They feel the entire burden. If you ask for a frebie (in my case overnight shipping and now the Airport Extreme card) they don't suffer nearly as much. I bet they lost $40 on my Airport Card, if that.

For what it's worth, I explained to the sale guy that:

a.) while I finally have the machine, I can't do what I wanted with it and...
b.) had I known it would take upwards of 4 months to ship this thing completely I might have bought a PC.

He put me on hold for a few minutes, then added the card and asked if they could do anything else. I felt like sharing this info with the rest of you. Other than the wait I think Apple is a good company that is very nice to it's customers. You just have to know how to ask for something nicely. 🙂

Tryst I order my machine on the same day as you and its a edu order as well. It will be very interesting to see what tomorrow has in store for the both of us.

Our system set ups are identical except for the 2gb of ram on my setup. i've been scanning apple store and my email almost every 30mins since last night. i'm still holding a slight bit of hope that apple wont let me down.

Hi, I've managed the deal too -- a bit of a hassle because I also have the 30" monitor on order (I'm assuming they'll ship that with the 6800 card together). I was on hold for the longest time trying to get an affirmative answer from Apple Support with regard to EVERYTHING being covered by a single Apple Protection Plan despite arriving at separate times.

I was told so long as they were ordered at the same time -- but as a safeguard, he advised I didn't activate or register the Apple Protection Plan until I had all the bits and bobs in place.

It's odd. They've kept my original Web order number, but within it, they detail the cancelled CTO, added a new line item of the 6800 card (Mine was cheaper than yours Glasbathroom -- have you used your £150 rebate towards your order? I did), and they spec'ed out the new CTO.

They currently show 'on or before 24 September' for both the new CTO with 9600 card and the separate 6800 card. Am not going to hold them to that one. 😉

Tryst, I am back from my round of golf and I feel refreshed. Hell I even bought the new Scotty Cameron Red X Putter! It worked wonders on the greens! No word yet over here, I called the supervisor I have been in contact with and he told me there was nothing new to report. But since I had not received an email it looks likely. Also for all of you who have ordered systems with the 6800 card that haven't been broken up; he received an email stating there was going to be another delay on machines with that configuration, which by now I am sure you guys are aware of. So I feel like their could be a chance for us Tryst but again my trust and faith is gone. At least I shot a 78 today! 🙂 Good luck again all is not lost yet... Going to practice my putting somemore... 😀
