Just got off the phone with Apple. The "beast" is shipping in 12 to 24 hours. Of course, I'll believe it when I see it, but........... 🙂
 
Jeez this sucker is fast! I've been playing around with it a little and I have 2 concerns that maybe someone can help me with.

1st, I put two 512mb PC3200 sticks in as the instructions say, but my G5 will not recognize that there is anything there. System Profiler says the slots are empty. When I put the RAM sticks in they do not fit in like the pre-installed sticks do. The sticks are not flush with the pre-installed ones, and the little ejectors do not fit into the slots like they do in the pre-installed ones. Any suggestions?

2nd, I bought a couple of PCI cards. One is a 3 USB 2.0/2 FireWire port card from OWC. The other is a Alchemy TV DVR card. When I put these cards in, neither of them fit in all the way so I can put the screws back in. Now maybe I need longer screws?

Besides that, this machine is nice. The fans rev here and there, but nothing like a G4 tower. Now if I can get the PCI cards and RAM to work, it will have been well worth the 3 month wait!

Are there any HIDEF Component input cards? Thanks.

I talked with Elgato and they are designing an external firewire one with an estimated production date of late 2005-06. Not fun.

Do we then celebrate the 5000th post on 4998? I remember having similar debates whether we should have celebrated the Millennium on NYE 1999 or NYE 2000?

Also, I've noticed my shipping status has changed to 'Fast Ship (EMEA)' (which I believe stands for Europe, Middle East, and Africa). Is this the same as TNT as a courier? or better?

Oh good I feel relieve that you were not reporting my post that you quoted... - I though I personally offended Luke Skywalker's #1 fan and that was not my intention.

Personally I think Wedge was the most unsung hero of the 'the original' trilogy

Make sure you're not plugging them in backwards ?? That's extremely whack, I'm getting some memory today and I'll post how it goes.

I have an alchemy card too, just use the screws that were in the PCI slot from before.. you might have to press hard to get the card in, but mine didn't break so.. marf.

You're talking to someone who has never seen ANY of the Star Wars films. Is there a character in there called Grebo? Well, that's a coincidence. My nickname comes from a song by Pop Will Eat Itself (Grebo Guru) recorded back in the early 80s.

The only Lucas film I'm interested in has just been released on DVD: THX 1138.

Anyhow -- no, I was referring to the Dell-baiter trying to rattle our cages (and succeeding to a degree I must confess). Even if he is a Mac 'enthusiast', he's just venting misguided jealousy at our investments...

I do not think they are backwards as that would be hard since the little notch would not let the RAM in at all. I tried resetting the PRAM, but that did nothing. ARRRGH!

I will try again with the PCI cards. I did push (fairly hard too), but it never seemed to fit right...
 
My Adaptec PCI card (3 USB 2.0, 2 FireWire 400 ports) needed quite a bit more downforce than I had expected in order to seat properly. It literally clicks into place.

Make sure your Power Mac is on its side, and insert the card by applying even force on both ends until it clicks down into its seat. You'll definitely know when it does - it's unmistakable.

Are you sure you have them paired off correctly? I believe the motherboard has indicators to help you ensure that the pairing is correct.

Also, are you sure they are PC3200 SDRAM DIMM configuration?

No, I am an idiot. I did not push them in hard enough, and so they were not sitting in the slots all the way. I was too afraid of breaking the motherboard! I will now try the PCI cards again and hopefully nothing breaks. Thanks for the help!

When I read your original message, I knew that was the problem... I had the same exact problem myself two days ago.

I read on other forums, people complaining about the "force" needed to put the RAM in. When I inserted mine, I was like "heck, that wasn't too hard.." - But then as I started looking at them, I realized they weren't ALL the way in. So I started pushing.. and pushing.. and pushing..

By the time I had installed the fourth chip, my hands were shaking, from the fear of thinking I might break the motherboard or the chip. 😱

Placing ram by yourself

Well, i've bought an extra 1 gig from my reseller, but I explicitly told him NOT to place it in at the warehouse. I don't want my G5 to be opened by someone other than me, it might sound silly, but i've been longing and waiting long enough, so I can fully enjoy that magical moment 🙂

Besides, i'm used to servicing pc's, so it shouldn't be a problem.

The problem is however, if I don't have a G5, I can't put in my ram yet 😛 😉

Heh. You shouldn't worry... Since Apple tells you how to install RAM, and wants customers to be able to do that easily, they should cover any problems that arrive. Only thing is that I have no doubt that it would take them months before they could take back your G5 and give you a new motherboard...

I hope that my G5 (WHEN IT ARRIVES) doesn't pose a lot of opposition when I try to install my 2x1gb RAM chips.
 
well I finally installed the RAM, 4 sticks of 512MB corsair PC3200 ($310 from http://www.newegg.com 😀). So now I have 2.5GB RAM in this thing, including the original 512MB.

[EDIT: BTW, I ran the extended Hardware test right after installing (with no errors reported) and it took about an hour and a half, just a word of warning.]

I put RAM in PCs on a weekly basis, it's just as hard as this.

Here are some tips:

1. make sure the RAM is in the right direction.
2. try using ONE hand to put the RAM in, use your thumb and index finger (with your middle on top of your index) and push evenly. I find this helps put the pressure in the right direction, which is more effective than the added force gained with 2 thumbs.
3. if your fingers go numb, take your hand out of the computer and wait for the feeling to come back, then try again (you press harder when you can feel them, I think)
4. yes, those are busted capillaries in the pads of your fingers, a small price to pay for 2.5 gigs of lovin'

So, 8/29 slipped to 9/17... that was a drag.

Now, 9/17 has slipped to 9/24.

Hardly surprised. Not even mad. I think they have broken me.

Ho hum.
 
Well, have had our 2.5 for almost a week now, and what a machine!!

We had originally ordered a stock machine with a 250 Gig HD, but since our date got pushed from early Sept. to late Oct., we decided to get one from our almost local Apple Store (which took about one week).

Tonight installed a 250 Gig HD to accompany the 160, and it took no more than five minutes to accomplish. Wow. Couldn't have been any easier.

We've had nothing but Mac's since our SE, and this is by far the nicest looking one of the lot. Apple's fit and finish surpasses others' so much it is pitiful.

This machine is much quieter than our DP 500 G4. True, every now and then one hears the fans spool up, but it is not annoying to me at all. In fact, it is reassuring to know it is breathing occasionally.

For those who are still waiting for delivery, I believe I know a little bit what you're going through, but hang in there--this computer is worth the wait!!!

Ordered 8-2-04. Ship date was on or before 9-15. Computer is stock config.
