Why I bought when I did

slughead said:
That doesn't necessarily mean it'll make a difference if you just buy a g5 now and wait for the monitor.

I think what they may have meant to say is: you have to register both products with Applecare at the same time.

When I registered for Applecare online, it asked if I had an Apple display as well.. I didn't have one, but I could've Applecare'd for no extra charge if I wanted to.

You might consider asking them specifically about that possibility, or calling an Apple retail store an asking them.

Again, I'm fairly certain if you have 2 UPC stickers on the bottom of your Applecare package, you may tie it to any units you want. Buy a display in town? buy a computer in town? you probably could use that Applecare package you bought online.

I know for certain that's what I did, but on the other hand, it might be different if you have a display..
I specifically waited until the WWDC announcement of the new displays because historically displays cost less when coupled with a new machine. The bonus is that they're covered by warranty when APP is purchased on the same invoice.

There were some great deals on the older style Cinema Displays, but the new ones are just too cool.

I agree with grebo, and basically did the same thing, ordered through reseller june 13th, and added a new alu display to the same invoice on june 28.

if only the equipment would arrive 🙂

ImacG5

Wow, you're going to have two new G5-based machines -- very nice! The new iMac is really really nice. I played with one in Paris at the Expo and was really tempted to 'switch' to the iMac instead of the Powermac. Problem is I'd exhaust the internal storage faster that you can say alt.binaries!

Actually Grebo, The Imac G5 isn't for me, it's for our real estate office down here. I recommended it since we were receiving too many virus infected emails that were getting close to disrupting business. The pc has also been constant problems. So the Imac is a safety measure. I suppose an emac would have been fine, but wheres the fun in that? 😉

ps. I get to play with it too.

The website will ask you if you want to register a display when you register your computer. However, it will ask you the date of purchase for the display which has to be the same date as the computer. If you call them directly, they will ask to make sure that the display was purchased at the same time as the computer.

You might be able to just say that the date is the same, however, if you ever need service, you will probably have to provide a copy of your invoice.

I also think that its very important to purchase the CPU and monitor at the same time. You just never know when you will need AppleCare. It offers that security of coverage.

Either way, I seem to recall we partied like it was 1999.

I'm sure my new G5 could compute the correct answer. Oh that's right - I don't HAVE a new G5 yet!

i still party like it's 1999, heeeeeey macerana!

btw, 5000th post will be on page 201 (25 posts per page) becuase like the calendar, there was no page 0

😉

anyone else want to challenge me? ha i win! 😀

Apple rep offered $75 off...

I called up Apple and explained my situation to the representative.
I ordered June 10th. Added geforce 6800 when it was announced. Agreed to the email that stated shipping Sept 3rd and 6800 seperately on the 17th. Even had to call apple for a confirmation since i got an "action required" notice. Then Apple did not honor the agreement.
The rep offered me a measly $25 so I asked to talk to supervisor. The rep came back and offered $75 stating "Thats all I can offer". I asked about possibly getting something of similar value from the store and he said no. So $75 off it is!
I did accomplish something however, my PowerMac is set to ship on the 17th instead of said Oct 15th.
So far my experience with Apple has been a confusing one. They don't do business like any other OEM out there.

When I asked an apple sales rep, he said that I can get AppleCare that covers the monitor and G5 as long as I buy it after the fact, and before the initial warrantees run out.

Coverage tactics

Yeah, that's a curious one. I think earlier on here in this thread someone was saying that: ride it out on your first year with the standard warranty -- THEN activate the three-year coverage before the end of the first year. That way you get FOUR years coverage (mind you, the on-site repair only applies on the APP coverage)

hmmm

Applecare extends your warranty with 2 years, not 3. You get 3 years of warranty if you buy Applecare with your machine. But in reality, you already have the right at 1 year. So you pay for the other 2.

quiet

It's awfully quiet in this thread 🙂
C'mon guys, don't leave us here, hehe

ps : enjoying some tortilla chips and red wodka right now

noise and over heating

I was told by a reseller that he already had a couple machines returned to him because of overheating issues, does anyone here who has the dual 2.5 g5 has entountered a similar problem? I also wonder how noisy is the computer? Thanks 🙂

Gotta Love Apple

They cancelled and reordered my computer (stock + 250 drive) and now the ship date is way way pushed back (10/22. Anyone else have this happen with a good outcome? 😱

Irie

Apple Guy put me on hold - I'll update this post once I get a response.

So fingers crossed I will get it before the end of the month.

Shipping

See... Told you I wouldn't be excited. 🙄
Maybe cause I won't believe it until it is in my greasy little hands.

So TamTam, add me to the "shipping" status. In theory, I'm supposed to have it on Friday.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Good luck guys!

Congrats H@nk. Mine should be shipping on the 17th finally after over 3 months of waiting. Hope things turn out to be right when i get it. I'd hate to have to return it after all this.

Finally

After getting my delayed email yesterday, and calling and complaning which netted me a 100 discount and an airport extreme for compensation for the delay. my 2.5 shipped today, priority overnight so i should be getting it in about 9 hours. not counting my chickens yet however. Hopfully the rest of yours are all on there way within the next few days. ordered 7/7 edu.

Tryst, congrats!!! what was your order number out of curiousity? I ordered on the same day as you and management supposedly escalated and expedited my order even! But still no word on this end... Your patience is truly deserving... Have fun tomorrow! 😀

piece of %?!!#%#@

I went to pickup my g5 from the apple store in San Francisco and the
computer was dead on arrival!!! Pathetic I am returning it tomorow and advise all of you to cancel your order 😡 😡 😡

6800 release

Is there an actual confirmed day that the 6800's will be released?

I'm in Australia and ordered my 2.5/250Gb/2GSDRAM/6800DDL/23" on 29/7 through a reseller.

The only info we have is "Late october". Anything to do with 6800's seems so vague to us Aussies, I wish we got that deal with the 9800 and the seperate 6800 shipment later.

Does anybody on the planet have a 6800???!!

Is there anybody who could estimate my g5 order?! I am desperate and my poor reseller gets told nothing! HELP!

please!

Sorry you had a DOA machine, but that happens with all electronics. Advising us all to cancel our orders isn't going to help you, and doesn't say anything about the global quality of these machines.

Hopefully you'll have a working unit tomorrow

6800 in OZ

bacondeluxe... I have the same issue. I ordered a G5 2.5 with 23 inch monitor and 6800 in mid July. At the time we were told 3-5 weeks for delivery. Now there is a joke. After four weeks I thought I'd confirm ETA with my reseller... two weeks he was told.... and two weeks later when I checked again.... two more weeks. Now we get a vague .. October

I look forward to the G5 arriving and hope the rest of my Apple experience is better, because I as someone moving from the world of x86/windows to MAC I have to say that the experience so far is pretty poor. It is just as well the average Apple buyer has lots of patience, because if Apple made x86 gear they would have gone out of business years ago with attitude they have to delivery.

Why the hell they dont wait till they are in a position to ship before they offer a product on the market is beyond me. It is a sales model just about every other industry has long since ditched. You pre-market, if you take pre-orders you make it clear that is what you are doing, if you are offering clear set timeframes (and when I ordered the 6800 it was listed on Apples site here in Oz as 3-5 weeks)then you had better be in a position to deliver (ie actually have stock). Blaming other vendors (IBM and NVIDIA) is crap. They did not put the product on the market and say they could deliver it. Apple did and they may engineer great products but the need to re-visit Customer Service... cause they are very poor at it.

Hi all! I haven't been posting for sometime now. I've been extremely busy with school related stuff. Well, I finally recieved my duel 2.5G5 yesterday. I recieved my shipping confirmation on the 7th of Sept and it arrived on the 14th. TamTam thanks for keeping the spreadsheet. Your hardwork is greatly appreciated. Well, you can update my status now. I'm a canadian order, btw.
For those of you who are still waiting, HANG IN THERE! I know it's tough but you'll be satisfied with your computer once it arrives.
Regarding the reving fan.. yes, I've noticed that too. If you play music, you probably wouldn't even notice it.
