They did not put the product on the market and say they could deliver it. Apple did and they may engineer great products but the need to re-visit Customer Service... cause they are very poor at it.

I mostly agree on your post, about them not announcing products until they have a certain amount of stock, and at least a good idea of what production can hold.

But I don't agree with you on that whole 3rd-party thing. It seems to me those companies tell Apple they are ready to produce the product at a certain point. Apple will not be announcing products if they didn't know they would be going into production not long after the announcement. But if that production comes to a holt, or faces other challenges, well.. then we have a situation like this. Partly Apple's fault, but a major part has to do with the 3rd party vendors, if you ask me.

But then again, their customer service and logistics system could be a lot better imho

Hi,
Some news ...

I got as many of us the 24/9 delivery date with a 9600, and 15/10 for the 6800 (maybe on 15/10, maybe later ... it happens so many times 🙄 ).
But I can't get a true order confirmation at all ! !
The cost is all but a 'normal' one.
And several calls to Applestore can't help me to get a 'good' order confirmation. Financial team seems as good as production and delivery 😀

I'm asking myself if I'm going to get my G5 some day ... 😉

Yes, we're at an impasse -- even the excitement of seeing this thread through to 5000 is not enough to keep us going. Those of us with dates quoted of 24/9 are hoping the 'on or before' part leans towards the latter.

BTW: has anybody else here done the free iTunes download and then you see a new order in your order status page that says 'Complete' and you freak out with joy until you realise it's just a stupid 'invoice' for a song that was free in the first place...

on or before?

On or before can actually tend towards the before. It depends on what you orderer:

2.5 G5 - delayed multiple times, 6800 split off, ultimately ships about a week before final on-or-before date

Airport Extreme Card - received 10 days before before ship date!

6800 - still waiting. 🙂

I was inferring 'or before' when I said 'the latter'. 'On' would be 'the former' in the phrase 'on or before'.

So to clarify: we're hoping they ship 'before'. 😉

Conspiracy Theory

Why would apple cancell and immediately reorder one's computer - for two reasons.... one: to push back ship date as revenge for having to give out $200 in credits and two to make the monitor and computer on a seperate order making it a mess with Apple Care.... 😡 Even guy on phone never once said anything positive and clear that this Apple care mess would not be an issue... 😕

It is funny how baffeled the people are there. Fortunately, I found that an Apple Store will let me return my monitor (just need empty box with S/N and SKU piece (no need to upset a perfectly working system at home) and they will BUY the box back and reselle 'the box' to me with a new G5 - problem solved. So Keep your fingers crossed I may be posting pictures of set up tonight after work. GOing to give Apple guy 4 hours to call me back this morning - otherwise... I will be forced to give up the 90 gigs and suffer with a small 160 gig drive. 😱 😛

They cancelled and reordered my computer (stock + 250 drive) and now the ship date is way way pushed back (10/22. Anyone else have this happen with a good outcome? 😱

There is no doubt but that you will receive your G5. It's all in the manner of the timing. As many have said you will feel well rewarded for the wait.

External Hard Drives + NEW G5 in 30 minutes!

Does any one know how well an external hard drive performs vs a internal S-ATA drive - While I anticipate that 160 will be plenty for now... I'm just curious how in the future I can plan to use an exturnal hard drive - are they still storage based syatems or can they be used as readily as a inturnal drive these days for A/V tasks? 😕

On another note.....
30 minuts to go.... put the dual 2.5 G5 on hold at store and I'm bolting at lunch to pick it up!!!!! 😱 😀 [will cancel on or AFTER 9/24 order once I get back - still getting 6800 card for $405 - so that will be a perk and my only loss is the 90 gigs of HD Space]

I'd love to see in detail how Apple manages its order que... to me it does not seem well managed at all. 😡

Yeah - tonight I burn with iDVD and play around with photoshop CS!!!!! Post a few pics etc.... Yeah! 😀

Heck even if it is DOA - I will not be upset since they have 3 in stock and my home town get a NEW store on Saturday!!!!!!! I can't wait for that! Heck at least it will be a free shirt and a place to get my G5 replaced/repaired and expanded! 😛

Apparently this is what is NEEDED to do to change the component in an order. If when you first split up the 6800 from the 2.5 and the order was not re-placed then it would not have been able to ship.

I have watched this forum for months waiting patiently for my July 11 order. I was just sent a third push two days ago when it happened, the magic email was sent.

Know I can stop getting worked up three times a day looking up the status. I can know sleep at night to the sound of low rev fans in the background. Finally, I can get some work done.

My wife thinks I am a nerd checking this site everyday, but its been fun following this roller coaster. I hope the computer lives up to its rep.

Congrats on ordering a G5 and welcome aboard. Can you tell us if you only ordered a stock machine or a special configuration(tell us what parts).

It's all ok now!

I guess - that could make sense but for nearly 3 weeks my order was split and showed G5 and a second item for the card upgrade 'kit' - but it is all better now.....

CAUSE THE G5 SI IN THE BACK OF MY CAR!!!! 😀 (no I will not tell you where I work) 😛 - Went to store and as I said before returned the monitor (empty box) and rebought the box and the G5 - went smooth and quickly!!!!!!!

3 hours till quitting time and I'm taking a PTO day tomorrow!!!!!! My boss is so cool! 😎

Would you be so kind as to share with us what city you were able to find this G5??? Bay area I suppose, but which store? Very cool for you!

Palo Alto

But supposidly I got the last one... try Walnut Creek or Pleasanton (on Sat - I'll meet you there - I'm one of those geeks that loves a free shirt!)

ANd out of the three staff I worked with they were ALL very helpful, knowledgable and seemed to be enjoying their Jobs (pardon the pun)...

It is hillarious the different stories I have gotten from each of the Bay area stores. Walnut Creek said noone is getting ANY until October, Palo Alto told me the last one just walked out the door when I called about 45 mins ago!! That might have been you! 🙂

GeForce 6800 delays

At this point, I'm working under then assumption that my GeForce 6800 will not ship "on or before September 17", but the question is, what is the best thing to do if it doesn't?

My notification email from apple was pretty clear, no small print, no maybe:
"The 2.5DP G5 will ship with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/128MB SDRAM card and a stand-alone NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL Graphics Card Stand-Alone Kit by September 17th. "

My order status online tells a different story, however (10/29/04). Of course, I don't think this is correct based on 2 apple representatives (both supervisors) telling me not to look at the date in the store, but to trust email notifications only.

There are obvious legal precedents about online order processing and shipping, notably the July 27th, 2000 'Project TooLate.com' ruling where 7 major online retailers were fined 1.5million for failing to live up to delivery schedules and promises they made.
(See http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/features/toolate.htm for more information)

The only question is, how do we still get the special $450 price for GeForce 6800 cards if Apple cancels our order or we decide to take 'the rest' of our business elsewhere? It gets pretty sticky, since Apple's promise included some non-MSRP price breaks on the NVidia cards to get us our computers sooner, and I think that the emails asking us about how we would like to accept delivery constitute a contract between us.

I'll keep you folks updated on what happens tomorrow, but it is pretty likely that apple will do something illegal tomorrow by not sending me a third delay confirmation email. It may even be illegal already, since the FTC rule has a specific clause about renewed definite dates of buyer's specific consent:
Provided, however, That where the seller previously has obtained the buyer's express consent to an unanticipated delay until a specific date beyond the definite revised shipping date, pursuant to paragraph (b) (1) (iv) of this section or to a further delay until a specific date beyond the definite revised shipping date pursuant to paragraph (b) (2) of this section, that date to which the buyer has expressly consented shall supersede the definite revised shipping date for purposes of paragraph (b) (2) of this section.

(i) Any offer to the buyer of said renewed option shall provide the buyer with a new definite revised shipping date, but where the seller lacks a reasonable basis for providing a new definite revised shipping date, the notice shall inform the buyer that the seller is unable to make any representation regarding the length of the further delay.
(see http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/mailrule.htm)

I'm not exactly sure what the 'reasonable basis' was for apple to have made the September 17th promise to me, but if they miss it after I 'expressly consented' to a 'definite revised shipping date', I don't think they can re-delay it and will have to cancel it, in which case I think they would break the contractual agreement about the simultaneous purchase and special pricing. Perhaps I'll call the FTC on Monday to see what they think about Apple's practices...

BTW--the G5 is awseome... I just want the video card I ordered delivered to me in a timely manner, and for Apple to live up to its obligations!

Yes that was me

Yup that was me!!!!!!! 🙄

You don't seem very gracious to have your G5. Some people don't even have their G5 yet, so I wouldn't start complaining about your video card. For example, I ordered 10 minutes after the 2.5s were originally announced. Upgraded to the 6800 minutes after that was announced. Separated the 6800 from the G5 as soon as the offer was made, and my estimated ship date was moved 7 times, now into late October (the 25th).

Oh, and btw, the 6800s won't be shipping until half-way through October.

I personally would prefer Apple to focus on getting all their due G5s out the door before worrying about a premium graphics card that was going to have supply issues from the beginning, even if I already received my G5.

Right now I have 200 RAW images to convert, that will take approximately 11 hours as each require specific adjustments, waiting 3mins to open and 30secs for the changes to be applied. If I had my G5 by the 14th, as it was most recently scheduled, I'd have it done in 2 hours or less.

When did you order the G5 and when did you get it?

1 gig ram, Airport card, 250 drive, and 6800 card, but as you can guess it has been split and is to ship on the 25th.
